Kaps Place is a reliable budget option tucked into the historic Barrio Amon neighborhood, within walking distance of the National Museum. Rooms are basic but clean, with decent Wi-Fi and hot water showers. The communal kitchen and lounge area make it easy to meet other travelers. Staff are genuinely helpful with directions and local tips. It gets noisy on weekend nights, so ask for a room facing the courtyard.
Hotel Aranjuez
Hotel Aranjuez is a charming guesthouse spread across several converted houses on Calle 19 in the quiet Barrio Aranjuez district. The garden breakfast patio is one of the nicest spots in the city to start a morning. Rooms vary quite a bit in size and style, so request one of the recently renovated options. It is a 10-minute walk to the Teatro Nacional and central San Jose. The owners are extremely knowledgeable about Costa Rica and help guests plan day trips efficiently.
Hotel Don Carlos
Hotel Don Carlos sits on Calle 9 in Barrio Amon, one of the most architecturally interesting streets in central San Jose. The building dates back generations and is filled with pre-Columbian art reproductions and local crafts. Rooms are comfortable and air-conditioned, with a warm colonial aesthetic throughout. The on-site gift shop is surprisingly well curated for picking up quality souvenirs. It is not a luxury property, but the character and location make it genuinely memorable.
Fleur de Lys Hotel
The Fleur de Lys is a beautifully restored Victorian mansion on Calle 13 in Barrio Otoya, a short walk from the cultural corridor of Paseo de las Damas. The property has real character, with stained glass windows, ornate wooden details, and a courtyard garden that feels genuinely peaceful.
