01

Bar Harbor

The main hub. Busy, convenient, worth it if you plan ahead.

Mid-range $150-$420/night

Bar Harbor sits at the northeast corner of Mount Desert Island, five minutes from the Hulls Cove visitor center. Main Street and Cottage Street hold most of the hotels, restaurants, and whale-watching docks. You can walk to the Village Green, catch the Island Explorer bus to most trailheads for free, and grab coffee on Rodick Street before the crowds arrive. It gets loud in July and August. Parking on Mount Desert Street fills by 8 AM on peak days. Book at least three months out for summer. Off-season rates drop sharply after Columbus Day.

Best for
First-timerspeople without carsanyone who wants restaurants and activities walking distance
Walk times
  • Hulls Cove Visitor Center 12 min
  • Sand Beach trailhead 20 min
  • Village Green waterfront 5 min
Skip if: You hate crowds, travel in July without booking months ahead, or want a quiet retreat
Local tip: Stay on Cottage Street or Holland Avenue rather than Main Street. Same access, half the foot traffic noise at night.

Southwest Harbor

The quiet side. Locals eat here. Tourists mostly don't.

Mid-range $100-$260/night

Southwest Harbor sits on the western lobe of Mount Desert Island, about 20 minutes by car from Bar Harbor. Clark Point Road runs along the water with a working boat yard and a handful of inns. Main Street has a good hardware store, two real bakeries, and Thurston's Lobster Pound at the end of Steamboat Wharf Road. The Acadia Mountain and Flying Mountain trailheads are under 10 minutes away. Parking is almost never a problem. The Wendell Gilley Museum on Main Street is worth an hour. Expect less foot traffic, better seafood value, and a slower pace.

Best for
Repeat visitorscouplesanyone prioritizing hiking access over town amenities
Walk times
  • Acadia Mountain trailhead 8 min
  • Seal Cove Pond 10 min
  • Southwest Harbor waterfront 3 min
Skip if: You want evening entertainment options or need easy access to the park loop road
Local tip: The Claremont Hotel on Claremont Road has a croquet lawn and harbor views. Afternoon drinks there beat any Bar Harbor bar.

Northeast Harbor

Old money, quiet marina, genuinely beautiful.

Mid-range $150-$360/night

Northeast Harbor occupies the southeastern inlet of Mount Desert Island. Main Street curves around a deep-water marina where large sailboats and the occasional superyacht dock in summer. Sea Street leads to the public landing with free parking. The Asticou Azalea Garden on Route 3 is one of the best-kept secrets in Maine, open free at dawn. Thuya Garden up the hill behind it is just as good. Groceries and basic supplies are available at the market on Main Street but selection is limited. Dinner options are slim. This is a base for people who want beauty and quiet, not nightlife.

Best for
Travelers who want upscalecalm surroundings and access to the quieter southeast trails
Walk times
  • Asticou Azalea Garden 3 min
  • Jordan Pond 10 min
  • Acadia loop road entrance 12 min
Skip if: You need multiple restaurant options or plan to spend evenings out
Local tip: Asticou Inn serves afternoon tea with a view of the harbor. It costs less than you expect and the popovers are genuinely worth it.

04

Ellsworth

The budget gateway. No charm, but real savings and a Walmart.

Mid-range $80-$170/night

Ellsworth sits on the mainland about 20 miles north of Bar Harbor on US-1 and Route 3. High Street is a classic American commercial strip with chain hotels, a Target, and every fast food option imaginable. The drive to Hulls Cove takes 25 to 30 minutes without summer traffic, closer to 45 minutes on a busy Saturday morning in August. The Ellsworth Farmers Market runs Tuesday afternoons on State Street through October. City Hall has free parking near the Union River. If you are road-tripping with kids and want a Fairfield Inn budget with a pool, this is the move.

Best for
Budget travelersfamilies with kidsanyone with a car and flexibility on timing
Walk times
  • Hulls Cove Visitor Center 28 min
  • Bar Harbor waterfront 35 min
  • Ellsworth waterfall (Union River) 10 min
Skip if: You want to avoid driving, plan to hike early mornings, or care about atmosphere
Local tip: Leave Ellsworth by 7:30 AM on summer weekends. By 9 AM the Route 3 corridor into Bar Harbor is backed up badly.

Should I stay in Bar Harbor or somewhere quieter?

Bar Harbor makes sense for first visits. You can walk to everything, catch the free Island Explorer bus to trailheads, and handle logistics easily. Southwest Harbor is the upgrade for repeat visitors: same park access, 60% fewer people, better seafood prices. If August crowds sound exhausting, skip Bar Harbor entirely.

Is it worth staying on Mount Desert Island versus Ellsworth?

For most people, yes. Summer traffic on Route 3 into Bar Harbor can add 30 to 45 minutes each way during peak hours. Staying on the island costs more but you save that time every day. Ellsworth works if you are driving through, doing one day in the park, or traveling on a strict budget.

When should I book hotels near Acadia?

For July and August in Bar Harbor, book at least 90 days out. Good rooms under $250 are gone by April for peak summer weekends. Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor have more flexibility, sometimes 30 to 60 days out. September is the sweet spot: foliage starts, crowds drop 40%, and prices fall 20 to 30% from August peaks.

Are there hotels inside Acadia National Park itself?

No hotels sit inside park boundaries. The Jordan Pond House is a restaurant inside the park, not lodging. The closest options to actual trailheads are Bar Harbor (for the north side loop) and Southwest Harbor (for western trails). Blackwoods and Seawall campgrounds are inside the park if camping works for your trip.
