Old Town Alexandria

Historic waterfront with walkable restaurants and direct Metro to DC

Mid-range $170-$350/night

King Street is the spine of everything here. Walk west from the Potomac waterfront past boutique wine bars and Federal-era townhouses until you hit King Street Metro at the far end. Cameron Street and Prince Street run parallel with quieter guesthouses and the best brunch spots in the city. The Torpedo Factory Art Center sits on the water at 105 N Union Street. Hotels cluster near the intersection of King and Washington streets. Parking runs $25 to $40 per night at hotel garages. The Metro, Blue and Yellow lines, puts you at the National Mall in under 25 minutes.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesanyone who wants walkability and DC access without staying in DC
Walk times
  • King Street Metro 12 min
  • Torpedo Factory waterfront 8 min
  • Best restaurants on King Street 3 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or driving everywhere. Garage parking is expensive and street spots vanish by 7pm.
Local tip: Book on or south of King Street, not north. Two blocks north of King and the interesting part of Old Town disappears fast.

Del Ray

Neighborhood coffee shops, no tourist crowds, half the price of Old Town

Mount Vernon Avenue is the main strip, running from Braddock Road Metro south through independent restaurants, record stores, and a year-round farmers market at the corner of Mount Vernon and Oxford. The neighborhood sits about 1.5 miles north of Old Town, entirely residential in feel. Streets like East Glebe Road and Oakland Terrace hold small hotels and vacation rentals in converted 1940s bungalows. No chains here. Uber to Old Town runs about $8. The Saturday farmers market is open year-round and draws locals, not tourists. Restaurants along the avenue have no tourist markup.

Carlyle / Eisenhower Avenue

Chain hotels with Metro access and prices $80 cheaper than Old Town

Mid-range $120-$220/night

Carlyle is Alexandria's business district, anchored by Eisenhower Avenue Metro on the Blue and Yellow lines. Duke Street connects the area to Old Town two miles east and the I-495 beltway three miles west. Jamieson Avenue and Daingerfield Road host the bulk of the hotels: Hilton, Courtyard, Residence Inn. Walkable for errands, not for leisure. A cab to Old Town costs $12. Reagan National Airport is eight minutes by Metro, making this a practical layover base. The area lacks personality but it functions. Business travelers make up most of the guests on weeknights.

Best for
Business travelersfamilies with rental carsanyone flying into Reagan National wanting cheaper than DC
Walk times
  • Eisenhower Avenue Metro 7 min
  • Duke Street shopping and dining 10 min
  • Old Town via Metro 12 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner or experience any Alexandria character. This area offers none.
Local tip: Eisenhower Avenue is one of the least crowded stations on the Yellow Line. Trains run every six minutes during rush hour with consistent on-time performance.

Duke Street Corridor

Mid-city access to both Old Town and the beltway, genuinely affordable

Mid-range $90-$170/night

Duke Street cuts east to west across Alexandria from the waterfront to I-395. The hotel cluster sits around the intersection of Duke Street and South Van Dorn Street in the West End. Telegraph Road and Beauregard Street intersect nearby for quick I-495 access. La Quinta, Hampton Inn, and Extended Stay line this stretch. It is not scenic but it works. Old Town is a ten-minute drive east. The Pentagon is 15 minutes north via I-395. Grocery stores and pharmacies sit within a five-minute walk. This part of Alexandria is pure function, best suited to road trippers and extended stays.

Best for
Budget road-trippersextended staysfamilies who need space and a kitchenette
Walk times
  • Closest grocery store 6 min
  • Van Dorn Street Metro 15 min
  • Old Town by car 10 min
Skip if: You do not have a car. There is nothing interesting within walking distance here.
Local tip: Van Dorn Street Metro is 15 minutes on foot but three minutes by Uber. From there, DC Union Station is 25 minutes by train on the Blue Line.

Is Old Town Alexandria walkable enough to skip a car?

Yes, completely. King Street from the waterfront to the Metro is under a mile. Restaurants, bars, museums, the Potomac waterfront, and the Metro to DC all sit within a 15-minute walk of any Old Town hotel. The only reason to rent a car from Old Town is a day trip to Mount Vernon, eight miles south, or a flight out of Dulles.

How long is the Metro ride from Alexandria to downtown DC?

From King Street Metro, you reach the National Mall in about 22 minutes. Pentagon City is eight minutes. Reagan National Airport is 12 minutes. The Blue and Yellow lines both serve King Street, so trains run every three to six minutes during peak hours. A seven-day Metro pass costs $38 and covers unlimited rides across the full system.

Which Alexandria neighborhood has the best restaurants?

Old Town wins on volume with over 200 restaurants within ten blocks of King Street. Del Ray wins on character with independent spots on Mount Vernon Avenue and no tourist pricing. For a first trip, the 100 block of King Street covers seafood and wine bars. For a second trip, take an Uber to Del Ray and walk south from the farmers market.

Is Alexandria VA safe for tourists?

Old Town and Del Ray are among the safest neighborhoods in Northern Virginia and completely fine at night. The Duke Street Corridor and Carlyle areas are safe but feel generic suburban. The Potomac Yard area north of Old Town is improving. Avoid walking along Jefferson Davis Highway north of Braddock Road after dark.
