San Pedro Town

The island's beating heart. Walk to everything.

Mid-range $80-$200/night

San Pedro is the only real town on the island. Barrier Reef Drive (locals call it Front Street) runs along the beach, packed with dive shops, restaurants, and guesthouses. Pescador Drive one block inland has the best taco stands and local bars. Central Park sits dead center, 2 minutes from most hotels. Golf carts replace cars here. The airstrip is at the north end of Pescador Drive, so you step off the 15-minute puddle jumper from Belize City and you're already inside town. Budget guesthouses start at $80 a night. Weekend noise on Barrier Reef Drive is real until midnight.

Best for
First-timerssolo travelersanyone who wants to walk everywhere without renting a golf cart
Walk times
  • Central Park and the main town dock 2 min
  • Fido's Courtyard and the full restaurant strip on Barrier Reef Drive 5 min
  • San Pedro Airstrip at the north end of Pescador Drive 10 min
Skip if: You need total quiet at night. The Friday and Saturday bar scene on Barrier Reef Drive carries until midnight or later.
Local tip: Book on Pescador Drive instead of directly on Barrier Reef Drive. The beach is 1 minute away but you skip the weekend noise entirely.

Boca del Rio

Five minutes north of the chaos. Still reachable on foot.

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Boca del Rio is San Pedro's quiet northern edge, still connected to town by foot or golf cart. The neighborhood sits where the local river meets the sea, and fishing boats dock here every morning. Boca del Rio Drive runs north past small guesthouses and mid-range resorts with private docks. Most properties arrange daily snorkel and dive trips to the Belize Barrier Reef, a 10-minute boat ride offshore. Prices land in the sweet spot between downtown budget options and the expensive north. Fewer restaurants on your doorstep, but the full town strip is a 15-minute walk south down Barrier Reef Drive.

Best for
Couplesfamiliesand divers who want calm but don't need a golf cart just to reach dinner
Walk times
  • walk south to San Pedro Town center along Barrier Reef Drive 15 min
  • the local fishing dock on Boca del Rio Drive 3 min
  • San Pedro Airstrip 20 min
Skip if: You want full resort amenities like a spa or beach bar. Properties here are mostly smaller, owner-run places.
Local tip: The north bank of the river mouth has better sand than the south bank. Ask your property which side they're on before booking.

North Ambergris Caye

The island's luxury tier. Private beach and silence included.

Luxury $300-$800/night

Cross the hand-cranked swing bridge north of town and you enter a different world. North Ambergris begins roughly 2 miles from San Pedro and stretches 22 miles toward Mexico Rocks. Most resorts arrange water taxi pickups directly from the town dock. Grand Caribe, Matachica, and Las Terrazas sit up here with private docks, infinity pools, and rates to match. The Belize Barrier Reef runs parallel, some spots under 800 meters offshore. Staff-to-guest ratios at top resorts are extremely high. Pack everything before you arrive. Every dinner trip to town costs a water taxi each way, and the fares add up quickly over a week.

Best for
Honeymoonersanniversary tripsserious divers wanting immediate reef accessanyone who wants to disappear completely
Walk times
  • 5 20 min
  • boat ride to snorkeling on the Belize Barrier Reef from most resort docks 5 min
  • by water taxi back to San Pedro Airstrip 30 min
Skip if: You plan to eat out in town every night or explore the island actively. Water taxi fares at $10-20 each way add $40-80 a day for a couple.
Local tip: Ask the resort exactly how far north they are before booking. Two miles north means 15 minutes by golf cart. Fifteen miles north means a 30-minute water taxi ride each way, every time.

South End (Coconut Drive)

Quiet beach, local vibe, no tourists fighting for loungers.

Mid-range $100-$250/night

Coconut Drive runs south from San Pedro Town for about 3 miles, passing local neighborhoods, small beach hotels, and the island's mangrove lagoon on the west side. The beach here is narrower than the north but consistently uncrowded. Ambergris Divers operates from a dock near Tres Cocos at the south end, making this a practical base for daily reef trips. Most properties are owner-run boutique hotels charging $100-250 a night. A few solid restaurants sit on Coconut Drive but there is no nightlife strip. Past the 2-mile mark the road turns unpaved, making a golf cart rental at $50-75 a day basically mandatory.

Best for
Snorkelerscouples wanting peacerepeat visitors who know the island and want to avoid the tourist strip
Walk times
  • 20 30 min
  • the reef snorkel spots off the Tres Cocos dock 5 min
  • by golf cart to San Pedro Airstrip at the north end of town 35 min
Skip if: You don't want to rent a golf cart or you want restaurants outside your front door. The south end is beautiful but requires wheels for anything beyond your immediate block.
Local tip: The stretch of Coconut Drive between Seaview Street and Tres Cocos has the best sand on the south end. Look specifically for properties in this half-mile zone.

What is the best area to stay in Ambergris Caye for first-timers?

San Pedro Town is the right call for a first visit. You're 2 minutes from the main dock, 5 minutes from the best restaurants on Barrier Reef Drive, and you don't need a golf cart to get anywhere. Budget guesthouses start at $80 a night. Book on Pescador Drive rather than directly on Barrier Reef Drive to get quiet nights while keeping the beach a 1-minute walk away.

How do you get around Ambergris Caye?

Golf carts are the main way to move. Cars are banned on the island. Rentals run $50-75 a day from San Pedro Town. Within the town center everything is walkable in under 15 minutes. North of the swing bridge you switch to water taxis at $10-20 each way. The island is 25 miles long, so for anything beyond 3 miles in either direction you need wheels or a boat.

Is North Ambergris Caye worth the extra cost?

If you're on a honeymoon or want full seclusion, yes. Resorts like Matachica and Grand Caribe have private docks, reef access under 1 kilometer offshore, and rates starting around $300 a night. The catch: every dinner in town means a water taxi at $10-20 each way, each person. If you plan to explore or eat out regularly, staying in town and taking day trips north is far more practical.

What is the cheapest part of Ambergris Caye?

San Pedro Town center has the most affordable options. Ruby's Hotel on Barrier Reef Drive and San Pedro Holiday Hotel on Pescador Drive both run $80-130 a night with direct beach access. The south end of Coconut Drive near Tres Cocos has small owner-run hotels in the $100-180 range with good beaches and almost none of the tourist traffic you find on the main strip.
