Meads Bay

Anguilla's luxury strip. Calm water, world-class resorts, almost no crowds.

Luxury $450-$200/night

Meads Bay lines the northwest coast with nearly a mile of powder-white sand and flat, gin-clear water. Malliouhana sits on the bluff above the beach. Zemi Beach House and Carimar Beach Club anchor the shoreline. The sand stays quiet midweek even in high season. Blanchard's Restaurant at the western end draws the island's best-dressed crowd. Cap Juluca occupies Maundays Bay next door and is walkable at low tide along the shoreline. Valet parking, butler service, and $30 cocktails are standard here. Traffic on Meads Bay Road is light after 9pm. Grocery runs require a car; the nearest shop is 12 minutes in The Valley.

Shoal Bay East

The postcard beach. Reef snorkeling, beach bars, and the clearest water on the island.

Mid-range $150-$400/night

Shoal Bay East consistently ranks among the top Caribbean beaches and earns it without argument. The reef shelf 50 meters offshore is shallow and intact, reachable by swimming from the sand without a boat or guide. Uncle Ernie's on the far left has been pouring rum punches since 1979 and draws locals and tourists equally. Gwen's Reggae Grill fills with island crowds on weekend afternoons. Shoal Bay Villas and Ku sit directly on the sand. Shoal Bay Road connects south to the main island road in under five minutes. Taxis to The Valley run about $12. The beach is widest at the east end near the rocks.

Best for

Sandy Ground

The local hub. Salt pond, beach bars, reggae, and the most authentic slice of Anguilla.

Mid-range $80-$220/night

Sandy Ground wraps around a working salt pond on the west coast. Sandy Ground Road runs the full length with beach bars on the seaward side and the pond behind. Elvis' Beach Bar is the island's most famous painted shack and fills at sunset every day. Johnno's Beach Stop does live reggae most Saturday afternoons and draws a mixed crowd of expats and locals. The beach is narrower and the water less turquoise than Shoal Bay, but the atmosphere is genuine. Guesthouses and small inns dominate the accommodation side. The ferry to St. Martin departs from Blowing Point, a 10-minute drive south on West End Road.

Best for
Repeat visitorssolo travelersanyone who wants local Anguilla rather than resort Anguilla
Walk times
  • Elvis' Beach Bar 5 min

The Valley

The capital. No beach, but the cheapest rates on the island and central to everything.

Budget $60-$160/night

The Valley sits at the geographic center of the island on the north side. Coronation Avenue and Queen Elizabeth Avenue are the main commercial streets. The hospital, government offices, and the island's only full supermarket (Ashley and Sons on Queen Elizabeth Avenue) are all here. No beach is walkable, but every part of Anguilla is under 20 minutes by car from this base. Local restaurants cluster near South Hill Road just outside the center. Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport is a five-minute cab ride north. Budget guesthouses and self-catering apartments dominate and offer the island's lowest rack rates, especially in shoulder season from May to July.

Best for
Budget travelerslong-stay visitorsand anyone renting a car who wants cheap central accommodation
Walk times
  • Ashley and Sons Supermarket 6 min
  • Clayton J. Lloyd Airport 5 min
  • Sandy Ground Beach 10 min
Skip if: You want to walk to a beach, or this is a short luxury Caribbean trip
Local tip: Rent a car here on day one. Without one, The Valley isolates you from every beach on the island.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Anguilla?

Shoal Bay East for most people. The beach is the best on the island, the reef is 50 meters from shore, and Uncle Ernie's is steps away for evening drinks. Rates start around $150/night, which is reasonable for Anguilla. Step up to Meads Bay if budget is not a factor and you want complete seclusion.

Is Anguilla affordable for budget travelers?

Barely, but possible. Sandy Ground guesthouses start around $80/night. The Valley drops below that in shoulder season (May to October). Renting a car for $55 per day from a Sandy Ground base lets you access every beach without paying resort rates. Grocery runs to Ashley and Sons in The Valley keep food costs low.

Which area is closest to the Anguilla ferry terminal?

Blowing Point terminal is on the south coast. Sandy Ground is the closest main area at about 10 minutes by car. The Valley is 12 minutes. Meads Bay and Shoal Bay East both sit 15 to 20 minutes away. Taxis from Blowing Point to Sandy Ground cost around $15.

When is the best time to visit Anguilla?

February and March are peak season: dry, around 82F (28C), and Meads Bay hotels fully booked from September. May through July is the local sweet spot: 25 to 35 percent cheaper, quieter beaches, and still dry. Hurricane season runs August through October, when Sandy Ground guesthouses offer their lowest rates, sometimes under $80/night.
