Anna Maria City

Old Florida charm at the quiet north end

Luxury $220-$420/night

Pine Avenue is the spine of Anna Maria City: a walkable strip of pastel cottages, art galleries, and bait shops that has somehow resisted the resort machine. Rent a beach cruiser near Bay Boulevard and you cover the whole north tip in 20 minutes. Bean Point, the northernmost beach, draws half the crowd of any spot south of here. Most accommodation is vacation rentals in 1950s bungalows with squeaky screen doors and outdoor showers. No hotels, no chains. The Rod and Reel Pier juts into Tampa Bay two blocks from Pine Avenue and pulls serious nostalgia. Quietest end of the island by far.

Best for
Couplesrepeat visitors who want quietanyone allergic to chain hotels
Walk times
  • Bean Point beach: -walk from Pine Avenue 8 min
  • Anna Maria City Pier: -walk from Gulf Drive N 4 min
  • Rod and Reel Pier (Tampa Bay side): -walk from Bay Boulevard 6 min
Skip if: You need a hotel pool, daily housekeeping, or a bar within stumbling distance
Local tip: Book a cottage on Palmetto Avenue, one block off Pine Avenue. You get the walkability without the Gulf Drive road noise.

Holmes Beach

The island's family workhorse with the most rental inventory

Mid-range $150-$350/night

Holmes Beach covers the middle miles of the island along Gulf Drive and holds the bulk of the rental stock, including the largest vacation home complexes and a handful of small motels. The Publix on Marina Drive is the only full grocery store on the island, making this the practical pick for week-long stays. Key Royale Drive leads to the bay side and some of the quietest streets anywhere on Anna Maria. The beach access at 64th Street has reliable parking and a clean shot at sunset without fighting the crowds at either end. Functional over charming, but there is real value here.

Best for
Familiesgroupsweek-long stays where grocery access and rental variety matter
Walk times
  • Gulf Drive beach access at th Street: 5-walk from most Holmes Beach rentals 64 min
  • Publix on Marina Drive: -walk from the Gulf Drive corridor 8 min
  • Holmes Beach shops near Gulf Drive and Marina Drive intersection: -walk from the center strip 3 min
Skip if: You want character over convenience, or you care more about atmosphere than square footage
Local tip: Rentals on Key Royale Drive (bay side) run 20-30% cheaper than Gulf-facing equivalents and many have private kayak launches.

Bradenton Beach

Bridge Street, cold beer, and the island's only real social scene

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Bradenton Beach anchors the south end where Bridge Street meets the Gulf. This two-block strip has a dozen bars, restaurants, and shops crammed together. The Bridge Street Pier extends into the Gulf from the foot of the main drag and is the best sunset spot on the island. Coquina Beach at the southern tip is the largest and most popular beach, with lifeguards in season. The free island trolley stops at Bridge Street, so you can reach Anna Maria City without a car. Accommodation includes older motels and vacation rentals within walking distance of everything. Liveliest corner of the island.

Best for
Solo travelerscouples who want dining and nightlifevisitors who want to skip renting a car entirely
Walk times
  • Coquina Beach (southernmost tip): -walk from Bridge Street 12 min
  • Bridge Street Pier: -walk from the main Bridge Street restaurants 1 min
  • Cortez Road bridge to mainland: -walk, connects to the free trolley route 6 min
Skip if: You came for silence. Bridge Street bars run past 10pm and the trolley brings everyone here.
Local tip: Park once at the Coquina Beach lot and use the free trolley for the entire island. Saves $20 a day in parking fees and you never have to move the car.

Mid-Island Bay Side

Overlooked by most visitors, cheaper, and calmer than the Gulf side

Mid-range $100-$240/night

The bay-facing side of Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach is one of the island's least-marketed options. Streets like North Shore Drive and Flamingo Drive face Tampa Bay, delivering sunrise views, flat water for paddleboarding, and rental rates 20-40% below comparable Gulf-facing properties. Most bay-side rentals include private docks or kayak launches onto calm water. The mangrove shoreline near the Kingfish Boat Ramp on the Bradenton Beach bay side is a completely different Florida than the Gulf side. The Gulf beach is a 7-minute walk west. Not the right base if beach time is your only priority, but excellent value for water lovers.

Best for
Kayakerspaddleboardersbudget travelersand anyone booking last-minute when Gulf-side inventory is gone
Walk times
  • Nearest Gulf beach access from North Shore Drive: -walk west 7 min
  • Kingfish Boat Ramp (bay kayak launch): -walk from Flamingo Drive 3 min
  • Holmes Beach Publix from bay-side rentals: -walk via Marina Drive 10 min
Skip if: Your main goal is beach time. The extra 10 minutes of walking adds up across a week.
Local tip: Search for 'bay view' or 'bay access' on VRBO specifically. Many listings do not advertise their position but have private dock access that goes unused.

Which part of Anna Maria Island is best for families?

Holmes Beach is the practical pick. It has the only full grocery store on the island (Publix on Marina Drive), the widest selection of vacation rentals, and beach access at 64th Street with reliable parking. Anna Maria City is charming but small, with fewer amenities and mostly tiny cottages. Bradenton Beach works if your kids are old enough to enjoy the Bridge Street scene, but it gets louder at night.

Do you need a car on Anna Maria Island?

Not if you stay near Bradenton Beach. The free island trolley runs the full 7-mile length from Bradenton Beach to Anna Maria City, so you can manage without wheels. Holmes Beach and Anna Maria City are harder to navigate car-free unless you rent bikes on Pine Avenue. Most visitors drive in, park once near their rental, and use the trolley for day trips.

What is the cheapest area to stay on Anna Maria Island?

The bay side of Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach runs 20-40% cheaper than Gulf-facing properties. Expect $100-$160 per night for a bay-view rental in shoulder season (May, September, October). Bradenton Beach motels are the cheapest hotel-style option on the island, starting around $120 per night. Anna Maria City commands a premium because the supply of rentals is small and the demand from people wanting that old-Florida feel is high year-round.

When is the best time to visit Anna Maria Island?

March through May hits the sweet spot. Water temperatures reach 75-80F by April, crowds are lighter than summer, and nightly rates run 15-25% below peak. June through August is hot (90F plus), humid, and expensive. January and February are cooler at 65-70F but the island fills with snowbirds, keeping prices elevated. Late September and October deliver warm Gulf water, thin crowds, and the best value rates of any month with good beach weather.
