Nuevo Arenal

Expat lakeside town, completely off the tourist circuit

Budget $40-$120/night

Nuevo Arenal sits on Lago Arenal's northwest shore, roughly 40km from La Fortuna via Route 4. It was relocated here in 1973 after dam construction flooded the original town. Today a small expat community, a German-owned bakery called Tom's Pan on the main road, a couple of basic hotels, and the best-stocked hardware store in the region make up the center. Windsurfers and kitesurfers come for the reliable afternoon winds. Tronadora, 8km east, has the best lakeside restaurants in the Arenal zone. No organized tours depart from here. The volcano is an hour away by road.

Best for
Long-stay travelerswindsurfersanyone who wants to avoid tour groups entirely
Walk times
  • Lake shore 5 min
  • Tom's Pan bakery 3 min
  • Tronadora restaurants 15 min
Skip if: You want proximity to the volcano, waterfall, or hot springs
Local tip: Tom's Pan bakery opens at 5:30am. Best coffee and bread in the Arenal zone, not tourist-priced.

Do I need a rental car to stay in Arenal?

Only if you stay outside La Fortuna town. La Fortuna center is walkable and has shared shuttles to most attractions. Everywhere else, a car is not optional. Route 142 corridor, El Castillo, and Nuevo Arenal have no reliable public bus connections. Budget $40-60 per day for a 4WD, which you will need for unpaved roads leading to some lodges and to El Castillo.

What is the best area in Arenal for volcano views?

Route 142 west of La Fortuna, between km 15 and km 25. This is where Tabacon, Nayara Springs, and Lost Iguana are located. The volcano faces east, so mornings before 10am are clearest before clouds settle in. La Fortuna town itself has partial views blocked by surrounding hills. El Castillo gives strong lake views but limited direct volcano sightlines.

Which area has the best hot springs access in Arenal?

The Route 142 corridor. Tabacon and Baldi are both on this road. From La Fortuna center, a taxi or car takes 15-20 minutes, around $10 each way. From El Castillo or Nuevo Arenal, hot springs require a 30-45 minute drive. Budget option: Termales los Lagos on Route 142 charges $15 versus Tabacon's $90 entry fee.

When is the best time to visit Arenal, Costa Rica?

December through April is the dry season and the best window for clear volcano views. July and August have a brief dry spell called the verano de San Juan. The area gets rain year-round. Afternoon clouds cover the volcano most days by 10-11am even in dry season. Book hot springs for evening visits, not morning, and you will almost always see stars above the water.
