Downtown Core

Walk to everything and pay for the privilege

Luxury $600-$500/night

The core sits between Main Street and Cooper Avenue, from Hunter Street east to Original Street. Hotel Jerome on East Main Street and The Little Nell at the base of Ajax Mountain anchor the neighborhood. The Silver Queen gondola is an eight-minute walk south on Mill Street. Every restaurant on Hyman Avenue Mall, every boutique on Galena Street, and Rubey Park Transit Center on Durant Avenue are within five blocks. The St. Regis on East Dean Street runs $1,200 to $2,500 per night in ski season. Summer rates drop to $600 to $1,200. Nothing is cheaper here, and the crowds on the mall reflect that.

West End

Victorian quiet, five minutes from the circus

Luxury $400-$900/night

The West End runs from Hunter Street west to 7th Street along West Bleeker and West Francis streets. These tree-lined blocks are full of Victorian homes converted into high-end vacation rentals. No major hotel brands operate here. Peak-season two-bedroom rentals start around $800 per night and drop to $400 in shoulder months. The gondola is a 14-minute walk east on Main Street. The John Denver Sanctuary sits at the north end near West Bleeker and the Rio Grande Trail starts two blocks away. The Aspen Art Museum on North Mill Street is a 12-minute walk. Quiet at night, genuinely residential, and rare in Aspen.

Aspen Highlands

Slope-side value, free bus back to town

Luxury $250-$900/night

Maroon Creek Road leads to the Aspen Highlands base area, about two miles southwest of downtown. The Residences at Highlands sit directly at the lift. Free RFTA bus service on Maroon Creek Road runs every 20 minutes in ski season and reaches Rubey Park in eight minutes. Slope-side condos run $400 to $900 per night in winter, typically 30 to 40 percent below equivalent downtown options. Summer rates fall to $250 to $500. The Maroon Bells trailhead starts four miles up the road. There are no walkable restaurants at night unless you take the shuttle. It suits skiers who want the mountain, not the scene.

East Aspen

The most affordable address in the most expensive town in Colorado

Luxury $250-$650/night

East Aspen stretches along Highway 82 and Hunter Creek Road from Original Street toward the Roaring Fork Valley rim. The Molly Gibson Lodge on East Hopkins Avenue is one of the few traditional hotels here, running $300 to $600 per night in ski season. Short-term rentals on East Durant and East Cooper avenues are the main option. The gondola is a 12-minute walk west on Durant. Hunter Creek Trail starts at the end of Hunter Creek Road and is popular with locals year-round. Clark's Market on East Cooper Avenue is a five-minute walk. A handful of coffee shops serve morning skiers. It is the most residential and least curated part of Aspen.

Best for
Budget-conscious visitorshikersrepeat visitors who know the town
Walk times
  • Silver Queen Gondola base 12 min
  • Hunter Creek Trail 5 min
  • Downtown restaurants 15 min
Skip if: You want to feel at the center of things or prefer hotel amenities over self-catering
Local tip: Parking here is easier than anywhere else in Aspen. If you are renting a car, base yourself in East Aspen and drive to the other mountains instead of paying for downtown garage rates.

What is the best area to stay in Aspen for skiing?

Downtown Core is the best base if you are skiing Aspen Mountain every day. The gondola on South Mill Street is an eight-minute walk from Hotel Jerome and a six-minute walk from The Little Nell. If you plan to ski Aspen Highlands most days, the Residences at Highlands put you two minutes from the lift and save you 30 to 40 percent compared to downtown rates. Snowmass is a separate resort entirely, about 12 miles away on Highway 82.

Where can I stay in Aspen without spending $1,000 a night?

East Aspen and Aspen Highlands are your two realistic options. Rentals on East Durant Avenue start around $280 to $350 per night in shoulder season and $300 to $600 in ski season. The Molly Gibson Lodge on East Hopkins Avenue typically runs $300 to $500 per night. Both areas have free RFTA bus access to downtown and the mountains. Midweek rates in early December and late March are typically 20 to 30 percent below peak prices.

Do I need a car to stay in Aspen?

No. Aspen has one of the best free transit systems of any ski town in the United States. The RFTA Rubey Park Transit Center on Durant Avenue connects to Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk without a car. The free Castle Creek and Maroon Creek shuttles run every 20 minutes on ski days. Downtown Core and West End are fully walkable for dining and groceries. East Aspen is the only area where a car adds real convenience, mostly for grocery runs and reaching trailheads quickly.

What month is cheapest to visit Aspen?

Early December before the Christmas holiday rush and the month of April after spring break offer the lowest hotel rates in ski season, typically 25 to 40 percent below February and March peaks. The shoulder months of May and October are the cheapest of the year. Rooms that cost $1,200 in February can run $350 in May. The tradeoff in May is that most ski lifts are closed. Summer festival season in June and July pushes prices back up, especially during the Food and Wine Classic in late June.
