Where to Stay in Atlantic City

Four areas, four very different vibes. Pick wrong and you'll spend your trip in cabs. Here's what locals tell first-timers.

The Boardwalk

The classic AC strip with casinos at your doorstep

Mid-range $80-$220/night

This is the stretch most people picture when they think Atlantic City. The Boardwalk runs from Caesars and Bally's near Park Place down past Resorts and Hard Rock to the Showboat. You're steps from the beach, the saltwater taffy at James' on the Boardwalk, and the rolling chairs that locals roll their eyes at. Pacific Avenue runs one block back and has the cheaper rooms. Stick to the stretch between Mississippi and New Jersey Avenue. Past Revel toward Oriental Avenue gets dodgy after dark and the lighting drops off fast. Ocean views cost double, but the Boardwalk-facing rooms get loud until 2am on weekends.

Best for
First-time visitors who want casinosbeachand bars all within stumbling distance
Walk times
  • Caesars to Hard Rock 18 min
  • Boardwalk to Tanger Outlets 12 min
  • Bally's to Steel Pier 8 min
Skip if: You want quiet sleep or hate crowds. Weekend noise from Pacific Avenue carries straight up to the 15th floor.
Local tip: Book a room facing the Boardwalk above the 10th floor. Lower floors get the streetlight glare and the Friday night party noise. The rolling chair guys quote $5 per block but settle for $3 if you walk on.

Marina District

Upscale stays away from the Boardwalk crowds

Mid-range $140-$380/night

Tucked behind the bay on the north side, the Marina District is where Borgata, Water Club, Harrah's, and Golden Nugget sit. Renaissance Pointe and Huron Avenue feel like a different city compared to the Boardwalk. The rooms are newer, the spas are real spas, and the restaurants pull in chefs you've heard of. Bobby Flay Steak at Borgata still books out two weeks ahead. The catch: you're a 10-minute drive from the beach and Boardwalk action. The free jitney runs every 15 minutes but stops at midnight. Brigantine Boulevard gets you back to Atlantic Avenue in 5 minutes by car. Skip this area if you don't have a car and want to bar-hop on the Boardwalk.

Best for
Couplesfoodiesand anyone who wants a quieter base with serious dining
Walk times
  • Borgata to Water Club 4 min
  • Harrah's to Golden Nugget 9 min
  • Marina to nearest beach access 22 min
Skip if: You came for the Boardwalk experience or you don't have a car
Local tip: Borgata's poker room is the one place locals actually rate. Park at Water Club for free even if you're staying at Borgata. The walkway between them is climate controlled.

Ducktown

AC's old Italian neighborhood, walkable and underrated

Mid-range $90-$180/night

Ducktown sits just off the Boardwalk between Atlantic Avenue and the Expressway, roughly Mississippi to Texas Avenue. This is where AC's Italian-American families settled and where you'll find the food the casino buffets pretend to serve. Angelo's Fairmount Tavern on Mississippi has been pouring since 1935. Tony's Baltimore Grill stays open until 3am and the pizza is the local benchmark. Hotel options here are mostly mid-range chains on Pacific Avenue and a few independents. You're 4 to 8 minutes walking to the Boardwalk and the casinos, so you get the action without paying the Boardwalk markup. Avoid the blocks west of Atlantic Avenue past Texas, especially after 10pm.

Best for
Travelers who want walkable AC without paying Boardwalk prices
Walk times
  • Ducktown to Tropicana 6 min
  • Pacific Ave to Boardwalk 3 min
  • Tony's Baltimore Grill to Caesars 10 min
Skip if: You want ocean views from your room or full resort amenities
Local tip: Order the white pizza at Tony's and ask for it well done. The Ducktown Tavern on Iowa Avenue has the cheapest decent breakfast in the whole city. Cash only at most of the old spots.

Ventnor City

Quieter beach town next door, two miles south

Mid-range $110-$240/night

Ventnor isn't technically Atlantic City, but it shares the same beach and Boardwalk and starts right where AC ends at Jackson Avenue. The vibe shifts immediately. No casinos, no rolling chairs, just families, joggers, and the Ventnor Pier. Atlantic Avenue runs through both towns and is your main drag for restaurants and shops. The beach here has lifeguards through Labor Day, fewer crowds, and free entry past 5pm. Hotel options are limited to a handful of small boutique properties and rentals on Ventnor and Atlantic Avenues. You'll need a car or the jitney ($2.50 each way) to reach the casinos, about 10 minutes north. Don't pick this area if you came specifically to gamble or club.

Best for
Familiesbeach peopleand anyone wanting a quiet base near AC
Walk times
  • Ventnor Pier to Tropicana 35 min
  • Ventnor Avenue to beach 3 min
  • Hannah S. Kent Park to Atlantic Avenue 5 min
Skip if: You want walking-distance casinos or nightlife after 11pm
Local tip: Sack O' Subs on Ventnor Avenue does the local hoagie that beats any casino food court. The Ventnor library has the only free public bathrooms on the Boardwalk between AC and Margate.

Is the Boardwalk safe at night in Atlantic City?

Between Mississippi Avenue and New Jersey Avenue, yes. That stretch stays busy until 2am with casino traffic and lighting is solid. Past Revel toward Oriental Avenue and west of Pacific Avenue past Texas, the lighting drops and so does the foot traffic. Stick to the casino-fronted blocks after 11pm and use the jitney for $2.50 instead of walking 10 plus blocks.

Should I stay on the Boardwalk or in the Marina District?

Boardwalk if you want the classic AC trip with casinos, beach, and bars all within walking distance. Marina District if you have a car, want better food, and don't mind a 10-minute drive to the Boardwalk. Borgata and Water Club are the nicest rooms in the city by a clear margin. The free jitney connects both areas every 15 minutes until midnight.

Where should I stay in Atlantic City without a car?

Boardwalk or Ducktown. The Boardwalk gets you everything within 20 minutes on foot. Ducktown adds walkable Italian restaurants and runs about $40 cheaper per night. Marina District works without a car only if you stay put at Borgata. Ventnor needs the jitney or a car to get anywhere fun.

What area should families avoid in Atlantic City?

Skip the blocks west of Atlantic Avenue between Texas and Maryland after dark. The stretch of Boardwalk past Showboat toward Oriental Avenue feels abandoned at night. Stay south of New Jersey Avenue or move to Ventnor for a family base. The Marina District is fine for families but lacks the beach-town feel kids want.
