Mid-range $80-$200/night

Ponta Delgada sits on the southern coast of Sao Miguel, centered around the triple-arched Portas da Cidade on Largo Manuel de Arriaga. The main hotel strip runs along Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, within walking distance of the ferry terminal and central market on Rua Hintze Ribeiro. You get reliable wifi, restaurants open past 10pm, and direct buses to Sete Cidades and Furnas. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses on Rua Marques da Praia to four-star hotels facing the harbor. It is the only area with an ATM on every corner and a pharmacy open on Sundays.

Furnas

Geothermal village for nature lovers

Budget $60-$130/night

Furnas sits in a volcanic caldera 40km east of Ponta Delgada, built around a crater lake and dozens of bubbling hot springs. The village centers on Rua Dr. Frederico Moniz Pereira, where restaurants cook cozido das Furnas underground in geothermal vents. Stay within 10 minutes of Poca da Dona Beija thermal pools, open daily until 11pm. Accommodation is mostly small quintas and guesthouses, not chain hotels. No supermarket after 7pm, no bus after dark. Rent a car before you arrive. Nights are quiet, foggy, and genuinely remote. Two nights is the sweet spot before isolation sets in.

Best for
Coupleswellness travelersanyone who came specifically for geothermal scenery
Walk times
  • Poca da Dona Beija thermal pools 8 min
  • Furnas Lake geysers 15 min
  • Terra Nostra Garden 5 min

Angra do Heroismo

UNESCO city with no tourist queues

Budget $70-$150/night

Angra do Heroismo on Terceira Island is a UNESCO World Heritage city with intact 16th-century street grids. The historic core runs between Rua de Sao Joao and Rua Direita, flanked by the Praca Velha central square and the Cathedral of the Holy Savior. Hotels cluster near the harbor on Rua Conselheiro Luis Bettencourt. The city is compact, flat, and walkable end-to-end in 20 minutes. You are 15 minutes by foot from the Monte Brasil volcanic peninsula. Less visited than Sao Miguel means cheaper rooms and no queues at the viewpoints. Best for travelers who want culture without crowds.

Horta

Sailor town and whale watching hub

Budget $70-$140/night

Horta is Faial Island's only town, built around a marina famous for Atlantic yacht crossings. Peter Cafe Sport on Rua Vasco da Gama has been the meeting point for ocean sailors since 1918. The main hotel strip runs one block inland from the seafront along Rua Serpa Pinto. Book whale watching tours from the marina between May and October, with sperm whales and blue whales spotted within 10km offshore. The dormant Caldeira volcano sits 8km from town, 15 minutes by car. Faial connects to Pico Island by ferry in 30 minutes. A quieter and more authentic stay than anything on Sao Miguel.

Best for

Walk times
  • Horta Marina 4 min
  • Peter Cafe Sport 6 min
  • Faial ferry terminal 10 min
Skip if: You want the widest choice of hotels and restaurants on a single island
Local tip: Tradition holds that boats skipping the marina mural paintings have bad luck on the crossing. The murals cover every wall and date back to 1930.

Which island is best for first-time visitors to the Azores?

Sao Miguel is the right call for a first visit. It has the widest range of hotels from $60 guesthouses to $200 four-star rooms, direct flights from Lisbon in 1h40m and London in 2h30m, and the most day-trip variety: Sete Cidades crater lake, Furnas hot springs, and Nordeste sea cliffs all within 1 hour of Ponta Delgada. Terceira is a strong second if you want less tourism and a UNESCO city without the queues.

Do I need a car to explore the Azores?

Yes, on almost every island except Ponta Delgada city center. Buses between towns are infrequent and stop by 6pm. A rental car costs $35-60 per day on Sao Miguel. Book early in summer because fleet sizes are small and availability drops fast. In Furnas specifically, a car is not optional. Without one you are stuck in the village after 7pm with no taxis running.

When is the best time to visit the Azores?

June through September gives the warmest temperatures (22-26 degrees C) and lowest rainfall, but hotel prices rise 30-40% and popular spots like Sete Cidades fill up. May and October are the sweet spot: cheaper rooms, smaller crowds, and whale watching still running strong. Avoid February through March unless you want the cheapest prices and do not mind fog and rain four days out of seven.

How do I get between Azores islands?

SATA Air Acores runs inter-island flights from $40-80 one way and takes 30-45 minutes between most islands. Ferries run between the central group islands (Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Graciosa, Terceira) from May to September, costing $15-25 per person. The Faial to Pico crossing takes 30 minutes and is one of the best short ferry routes in the Atlantic. Do not count on ferries outside summer months as schedules become unreliable.
