Dongcheng

Walk to the Forbidden City. Sleep in the heart of imperial Beijing.

Mid-range $80-$280/night

Dongcheng puts you 8 minutes on foot from Tiananmen Square and 5 minutes from Wangfujing, Beijing's main pedestrian shopping strip. Hotels cluster near Wangfujing station (Line 1) and Dongdan, with quieter options along the Forbidden City moat on Nanheyan Street. Morning jianbing carts line Meishuguan Dongjie by 7am. The hutong lanes off Dongsi Beidajie give you a residential side of the district. It is the most tourist-dense area in Beijing but also the most practical. Budget $100 per night for anything decent close to the sights.

Best for
First-time visitorshistory loverspeople who want to walk to major sights without taking the metro
Walk times
  • Forbidden City East Gate (Donghua Gate) 8 min
  • Wangfujing Street 5 min
  • Dongdan Metro Station (Line 1 and Line 5) 7 min
Skip if: You hate crowds. Wangfujing fills with tour groups every evening and pavements near Tiananmen get gridlocked by 9am.
Local tip: Stay on the Nanheyan Street side near the east moat. It is noticeably quieter than the Wangfujing block and morning light on the palace wall makes the walk worthwhile.

Sanlitun / Chaoyang

Embassies, rooftop bars, international food. Beijing's expat heartland.

Mid-range $100-$380/night

Sanlitun sits 4 km northeast of Tiananmen in Chaoyang district. The main retail strip runs along Sanlitun Lu, anchored by the Taikoo Li mall and Workers' Stadium. Hotels cluster on Gongti Beilu and Chunxiu Lu. English menus, reliable Wi-Fi, and international restaurants are within 500 meters of almost every hotel here. You need Line 10 from Tuanjiehu station (a 10-minute walk) to reach central sights. A taxi to the Forbidden City takes 25 minutes outside rush hour. This area functions like any major world city and that is both its strength and its weakness.

Best for
Repeat visitorsbusiness travelersanyone prioritizing food and nightlife over proximity to ancient sights
Walk times
  • Taikoo Li Sanlitun Mall 6 min
  • Workers' Stadium North Gate 10 min
  • Tuanjiehu Metro Station (Line 10) 10 min
Skip if: You have only 3 days. Commuting to the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, or Temple of Heaven adds 40-60 minutes roundtrip every single day.
Local tip: Stay north of Gongti Beilu. Streets south of Workers' Stadium get loud after events and taxis disappear after midnight when rideshare prices triple.

Gulou / Drum Tower Hutong Area

Courtyard hotels, narrow alleys, the Beijing that actually feels like Beijing.

Budget $60-$200/night

The Drum Tower neighborhood centers on Gulou Dongdajie and Gulou Xidajie, the two roads flanking the Bell and Drum Towers. Hutong alleys including Nanluoguxiang to the east and Yandai Xiejie to the west are among the best-preserved in the city. Boutique hotels occupy converted siheyuan courtyards. Rooms run small and walls run thin, but the atmosphere is irreplaceable. The nearest metro is Shichahai on Line 8, a 10-minute walk from most hutong hotels. Houhai lake is 5 minutes on foot. Winter prices drop as low as $60 per night.

Best for
Travelers who want local atmosphereboutique courtyard staysand a slower pace away from tour groups
Walk times
  • Drum Tower 4 min
  • Houhai Lake 7 min
  • Forbidden City North Gate (Shenwumen) 22 min
Skip if: You need guaranteed quiet nights, a bathtub, or fast airport access. Hutong hotels trade comfort for character and that trade is real.
Local tip: Nanluoguxiang itself is now a bubble tea and souvenir corridor. Walk one alley over to Banchang Hutong or Mao'er Hutong for the same architecture without the selfie sticks.

CBD / Guomao

Glass towers, fast metro connections, and hotels built for business.

Mid-range $150-$600/night

The Central Business District clusters around China World Trade Center on Jianguomenwai Avenue and stretches east along the Third Ring Road. Major chains include the Park Hyatt, Rosewood, and China World Hotel. Guomao station sits at the intersection of Line 1 (Tiananmen in 20 minutes) and Line 10 (Sanyuanqiao for the Airport Express in 15 minutes). The area quiets noticeably on weekends when corporate travelers leave. Restaurants are office-canteen heavy on weekdays and half-empty on Saturdays. Weekend rates at the same property can run 30-40% below Tuesday prices.

Best for
Business travelersluxury seekersand anyone with an early flight who wants Airport Express access via Sanyuanqiao
Walk times
  • China World Trade Center 3 min
  • Guomao Metro Station (Line 1 and Line 10) 2 min
  • Tiananmen Square (by metro via Line 1) 22 min
Skip if: You want cultural immersion. The CBD is interchangeable with any major Asian financial district on a weekday morning.
Local tip: Book Friday or Saturday nights. Business-hotel demand collapses on weekends and the same Park Hyatt room that costs $350 on Wednesday sometimes drops to $200 on Saturday.

What is the best area in Beijing for first-time visitors?

Dongcheng. You walk to the Forbidden City in 8 minutes and Wangfujing in 5. Rooms start at $80 per night for a clean 3-star. The trade-off is crowds. Every morning from 8am the pavements near Tiananmen fill with tour groups. Stay near Nanheyan Street on the east side of the moat for the same sightseeing access with significantly less noise.

Is Sanlitun worth it for a 3-day trip to Beijing?

No. You lose 40-60 minutes per day commuting to the main sights. Sanlitun works well for longer stays or return visits where you have already covered the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. For 3 days, stay in Dongcheng or the Gulou hutong area and use that metro time for one more sight instead.

How much does a decent hotel in Beijing cost per night in 2026?

Budget: $60-90 in Gulou or outer Dongcheng. Mid-range: $120-200 near Sanlitun or central Dongcheng. Luxury: $250-600 in the CBD at properties like the Park Hyatt or China World Hotel. Prices jump 25-35% during Golden Week (October 1 to 7) and Spring Festival. Book those dates at least 2 months ahead or expect slim pickings.

Which Beijing neighborhood is best for airport access?

CBD/Guomao. Take Line 10 from Guomao station to Sanyuanqiao (about 15 minutes), then the Airport Express directly to Terminal 3 at Capital Airport (about 15 more minutes). Total door-to-gate is roughly 45-55 minutes. Sanlitun also works: Line 10 from Tuanjiehu to Sanyuanqiao adds only 5 extra minutes.
