Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Bermuda

Bermuda is tiny and expensive. The area you pick changes your entire trip. Here's an honest breakdown of five parishes, who belongs in each, and who should skip them entirely.

01

Hamilton

The island's hub, walkable and the most connected base you can pick

Luxury $250-$450/night

Hamilton packs most of Bermuda's restaurants, bars, and shops into a few walkable blocks. Front Street runs along the harbour and is the main artery. The ferry terminal is a 3-minute walk from most properties here. Reid Street, one block inland, has the best local lunch spots. You're within 15 minutes on foot of Bermuda Cathedral, City Hall, and the best cocktail bars on the island. Buses to Southampton (45 minutes) and St. George's (30 minutes) leave from Church Street. The biggest downside: there's no beach in Hamilton proper. Elbow Beach is a 25-minute scooter ride south. This is the right base if you're here for a short trip, a conference, or you plan to explore the whole island by bus and ferry. It's also the most affordable part of an expensive island, with guesthouses starting around $250 a night.

Best for
First-time visitorsBusiness travelersShort trips under 5 nights
Walk times
  • Ferry terminal 3 min
  • Reid Street restaurants 5 min
  • Bermuda Cathedral 10 min
Skip if: You came for the beaches. The nearest pink sand is a 25-minute scooter ride south and you'll need wheels for every beach day from here.
Local tip: The ferry to Paget and Warwick parishes costs $5 and leaves from the terminal on Heyl's Corner. It's faster than the bus and runs until about 9pm.

Southampton

Best beach access on the island, worth every extra dollar

Luxury $400-$900/night

Southampton is where Horseshoe Bay sits, and Horseshoe Bay is the reason most people fly to Bermuda. The beach is a 10-minute walk from properties on South Shore Road. Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is a 20-minute walk along the ridge. The Bermuda Railway Trail cuts through here and gives you a flat, car-free path east toward Warwick. Hamilton is 40 minutes by bus on Route 7 (runs every 15 minutes during the day, stops at 10pm) or 15 minutes by scooter on Middle Road. Southampton properties lean heavily toward resort style, which means the highest prices on the island. Late nights require a taxi or your own scooter. If you're honeymooning or here specifically for the beaches, this is the right call. For anything else, it's an expensive base with almost no walkable dining outside resort restaurants.

Best for
HoneymoonersBeach-focused travelersFamilies with kids
Walk times
  • Horseshoe Bay Beach 10 min
  • Gibbs Hill Lighthouse 20 min
  • Railway Trail access 5 min
Skip if: You want to walk to dinner most nights. Walkable restaurant options outside resort dining barely exist in this parish.
Local tip: Horseshoe Bay gets crowded between 11am and 2pm in summer. Walk 10 minutes west along the shore to Chaplin Bay. Almost nobody there and the water is the same color.

St. George's

UNESCO history, quiet streets, and the most character on the island

Luxury $180-$350/night

St. George's is Bermuda's original capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. King's Square in the town centre is a 2-minute walk from any guesthouse in town. Water Street has the best browsing: old pastel buildings with small shops selling local crafts and spices. Tobacco Bay Beach is a 15-minute walk north with calmer, protected water than the South Shore. St. Catherine's Fort is 20 minutes on foot. The downside is real: Hamilton is 30 minutes by bus on Route 1 or 3, and almost nothing is open after 9pm. The east end ferry to Hamilton runs only a few times daily in summer. Best for travelers who want to slow down and feel like they're somewhere genuinely old and specific, not just a tropical resort island. It's also the most affordable base on the island, with rooms starting under $200.

Best for
History travelersBudget-conscious visitorsSlow travelers who want quiet nights
Walk times
  • King's Square 2 min
  • Tobacco Bay Beach 15 min
  • St. Catherine's Fort 20 min
Skip if: You want nightlife or quick access to South Shore pink sand. Getting to Horseshoe Bay from here takes 45 minutes by bus.
Local tip: The St. George's ferry to Hamilton runs Tuesday through Sunday in summer. The schedule is posted outside the post office on Water Street. Check it the night before you plan your day.

Paget and Warwick

Residential calm, fast ferry to Hamilton, real Bermuda life

Luxury $200-$400/night

Paget and Warwick are quiet residential parishes on the south side of the Great Sound. The ferry from Darrell's Wharf or Lower Ferry Landing puts you in Hamilton in under 15 minutes, which beats the bus by half. Warwick Long Bay, one of the longest stretches of pink sand on the island, is a 20-minute walk from guesthouses along Middle Road. The Railway Trail through Warwick is excellent for morning runs with ocean views. This is where cottage-style guesthouses sit behind jasmine hedges with small pools and harbour views. Elbow Beach is in Paget, about 25 minutes on foot from Elbow Beach Road properties. Walkable restaurants barely exist here. Bring a scooter or plan every evening around the ferry schedule. The tradeoff is worth it: quieter nights, lower prices than Southampton, and a faster commute to Hamilton than most beach areas.

Best for
Couples wanting quietRepeat Bermuda visitorsRunners and cyclists
Walk times
  • Ferry to Hamilton 15 min
  • Warwick Long Bay Beach 20 min
  • Railway Trail access 5 min
Skip if: You need walkable restaurants and bars every night. Evening options in both parishes require transport.
Local tip: The ferry runs until around 9pm. Check the last departure before heading into Hamilton for dinner. A taxi back to Paget runs $30-40 and takes about 20 minutes.

Tucker's Town

Private, ultra-exclusive, and one of the most expensive addresses in the Atlantic

Luxury $700-$2000/night

Tucker's Town occupies the eastern tip of Bermuda near Castle Harbour. John's Folly Lane and Tucker's Town Road are lined with estate properties set behind stone walls. Tucker's Town Bay is a 5-minute walk and one of the quietest beaches on the island. Castle Harbour Beach is 10 minutes on foot. Hamilton is 30 minutes by taxi along Harrington Sound Road. There is no public transport worth planning around. Restaurants outside private club dining do not exist here. This is where serious wealth comes to disappear for a week. If you want total privacy, golf at one of the most respected clubs in the western hemisphere (Mid Ocean Club, founded 1921), and the quietest version of Bermuda possible, this is it. If you're watching your spending or want variety in your evenings, Tucker's Town will frustrate you within 24 hours.

Best for
Ultra-luxury travelersGolfers with serious budgetsPrivacy seekers
Walk times
  • Tucker's Town Bay Beach 5 min
  • Castle Harbour Beach 10 min
  • Harrington Sound waterfront 15 min
Skip if: You want convenience, walkable restaurants, or you're on any kind of budget. Even moderate travelers feel stranded here.
Local tip: The Harrington Sound road loop is one of the prettiest drives on the island. It takes 25 minutes and passes old estate gates, clear turquoise water, and almost no traffic.

What is the best area to stay in Bermuda for first-timers?

Hamilton is the safest first choice. You're walking distance from the ferry terminal, the best restaurants, and the main bus routes to every parish. It's not a beach base but it puts everything in reach. If your trip is primarily about beaches, book in Southampton and rent a scooter on day one. Don't try to split the difference by staying in Warwick. The ferry is good but the bus schedule will frustrate you on South Shore beach days.

Do tourists need to rent a scooter in Bermuda?

Bermuda does not allow tourists to rent cars. Your options are scooters, electric bikes, buses, ferries, and taxis. If you're staying outside Hamilton, a scooter is effectively required for a normal trip. Bus Routes 1 through 11 are reliable during the day but stop around 10pm and don't reach Tucker's Town. Scooter rental costs around $65-80 per day from operators in Hamilton and outside major hotels. Book in advance in June, July, and August.

How much does a hotel in Bermuda cost?

Bermuda is one of the most expensive destinations in the Atlantic. Budget guesthouses in St. George's start at $180-220 per night. Mid-range properties in Hamilton and Paget run $300-450. Southampton resorts start around $450 and peak above $900 in high season (June through August). Tucker's Town estate rentals start at $700 with no ceiling. Very few options on the island come in under $200 per night. The Bermuda dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, so there's no exchange rate to help.

Which part of Bermuda has the best beaches?

Southampton for Horseshoe Bay, without question. It's the most photographed beach in Bermuda and earns every bit of its reputation. Warwick Long Bay in Warwick Parish is the longest stretch of pink sand and draws fewer crowds. Tobacco Bay in St. George's has calmer, protected water better suited to snorkeling than swimming. Elbow Beach in Paget is easily accessible from Hamilton. If you only have one full beach day, go to Horseshoe Bay before 10am or after 3pm.

Is St. George's worth staying in or just visiting for a day?

Worth staying if you have 4 or more nights and want a mix of history, quiet, and lower prices. King's Square and Water Street take about half a day to properly explore. Tobacco Bay is genuinely beautiful. But you'll feel the isolation after 9pm and you'll spend 30-45 minutes reaching South Shore beaches every time. Most first-time visitors prefer a day trip on the bus from Hamilton. Stay there if you're a repeat visitor who's already done the resort circuit and wants something different.
