Jackson

Best overall base for both parks

Luxury $180-$420/night

Jackson sits at Broadway Avenue and Cache Street, with the elk antler arches at Town Square marking the center. You are 57 miles from Yellowstone South Entrance and 12 miles from Grand Teton's Moose Visitor Center. Hotels line North Cache and West Broadway from $180 per night. Persephone Bakery on Cache Street opens at 7am and lines form fast. Smith's Food and Drug on West Broadway handles groceries. Teton Mountaineering two blocks north has rental gear. Not inside either park, but the tradeoff is real restaurant options, gas under $6, and a town that functions if anything goes wrong on the road.

  • Town Square restaurants 3 min
  • National Museum of Wildlife Art 18 min

Teton Village

Upscale mountain base with gondola access

Luxury $320-$850/night

Teton Village clusters around 3265 Village Drive at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Hotel Terra, the Four Seasons, and Teton Mountain Lodge all sit within a two-minute walk of the aerial tram. You are 25 miles from Jenny Lake and 70 miles from Yellowstone South. Summer gondola runs to 10,450 feet with views across both park ranges. The Mangy Moose Restaurant on Village Drive fills by 6:30pm every night in July. No grocery store in the village. Cell service is decent. Quieter than Jackson town, but every meal requires advance planning or a 12-mile drive back.

Best for
Couples and serious hikers who prioritize resort amenities and Teton access over Yellowstone proximity
Walk times
  • Jackson Hole aerial tram base 2 min
  • Mangy Moose Restaurant 4 min
  • Cascade Canyon Trailhead via car 22 min
Skip if: You plan to drive to Yellowstone daily. The extra 13 miles each way becomes a grind by day three.
Local tip: Ride the gondola at 7am before tour buses arrive. Views are identical to the peak-hour experience.

Colter Bay Village sits on the western shore of Jackson Lake along US-89, 27 miles from Yellowstone South and 32 miles from Jackson town. Jackson Lake Lodge, perched above Willow Flats on the same highway, has 60-foot lobby windows facing the full Teton range. Colter Bay cabins start around $180 in shoulder season. The marina rents kayaks from 8am and runs lake cruises. A small camp store covers basics. Cell service drops at Colter Bay Junction. What is the best place to stay between Yellowstone and Grand Teton?

Jackson is the best overall base. It sits 57 miles from Yellowstone South and 12 miles from Grand Teton's Moose entrance, with hotels from $180 per night and real services. If you are focused on Grand Teton, Colter Bay puts you inside the park with Yellowstone 27 miles away. Flagg Ranch is the literal midpoint at 5 miles from Yellowstone South, but has almost no amenities and books out 6 months ahead.

Is it worth staying inside Grand Teton National Park?

Yes, if you book early. Colter Bay cabins start around $180 per night and put you on Jackson Lake with bison crossing the flats most mornings. Jackson Lake Lodge has unobstructed Teton views from the lobby. The tradeoff is one restaurant that closes at 9pm, no grocery store, and spotty cell service. Book 4 to 6 months out. These fill in February for summer.

How far apart are Yellowstone and Grand Teton?

The two parks share a border at Yellowstone South Entrance. From there to Grand Teton's north boundary is about 10 miles through the Rockefeller Parkway. From Yellowstone South to Jackson Lake Lodge is 27 miles. From Yellowstone South to Jackson town is 57 miles. Most visitors drive the full corridor in under 90 minutes without stops.

What is the cheapest area to stay near both parks?

Colter Bay Village cabins inside Grand Teton start around $180 per night in shoulder season (May and September). Jackson has budget hotels on North Cache Street from $160 to $200 in May. Teton Village runs 40 to 60 percent higher than Jackson for equivalent room quality. Flagg Ranch sits at $220 to $290 but sells out months ahead, so cheap last-minute options do not exist there.
