Chisos Basin

Sleep inside the park, wake up on the trail

Luxury $180-$260/night

This is the only lodging actually inside Big Bend, tucked at 5,400 feet in a bowl ringed by the Chisos Mountains. Chisos Mountains Lodge sits right at the trailhead for the Window Trail and Lost Mine Trail, so you skip the 30-mile drive other guests do every morning. Rooms are basic motel-style with no TVs and spotty cell service, but the view from the patio onto Casa Grande peak is the point. The lodge restaurant is the only food for miles, and it fills up by 6 pm. Book 6 to 9 months ahead, especially for spring break and Thanksgiving week. Bring a headlamp.

Best for
First-time visitorshikersanyone without a 4WD vehicle
Walk times
  • Window View Trail 2 min
  • Chisos Basin Visitor Center 5 min
  • Pinnacles Trail trailhead 8 min
Skip if: You want restaurants, nightlife, or reliable Wi-Fi
Local tip: Reserve a table at the lodge restaurant when you check in. Walk-ins after 6 pm wait an hour or get turned away.

Terlingua Ghost Town

Mining ruins, a famous porch, and the best dinner in the desert

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Twenty minutes from the west park entrance, Terlingua Ghost Town runs along FM 170 with adobe ruins, a cemetery from the 1900s mercury mining days, and the legendary Starlight Theatre restaurant. Stay at a casita on Ivey Road or near the Terlingua Trading Company porch where everyone gathers at sunset with a beer. La Posada Milagro and Basecamp Terlingua have the most distinct desert design, with private patios and outdoor showers. Nights here are unbelievably dark, the Milky Way is visible without any equipment. The drive to Santa Elena Canyon takes 45 minutes, so this works best as a base for west-side park days.

Best for
Couplesphotographerstravelers who want personality over polish
Walk times
  • Starlight Theatre 3 min
  • Terlingua Trading Company porch 2 min
  • ghost town cemetery 6 min
Skip if: You need a chain hotel or hate gravel roads
Local tip: Order the chile relleno at Starlight Theatre and arrive by 6 pm. The wait hits 90 minutes by 7.

Study Butte

The practical basecamp at the park gate

Mid-range $95-$160/night

Three miles east of Terlingua at the junction of Highway 118 and FM 170, Study Butte is the closest cluster of motels and gas stations to the west park entrance. Big Bend Motor Inn, Chisos Mining Company Motel, and Easter Egg Valley Motel sit along the highway with rooms in the $95 to $160 range. There is no charm here, just a functional desert pit stop with the only proper grocery at Cottonwood General Store. The advantage is the 5-minute drive to the Maverick entrance station, which puts you in the park before the Chisos Basin parking lot fills up at 9 am.

Best for
Road trippersfamilies on a budgetearly-start hikers
Walk times
  • Cottonwood General Store 4 min
  • Long Draw Pizza 6 min
  • drive to Maverick entrance 10 min
Skip if: You want atmosphere or a good restaurant within walking distance
Local tip: Fill your gas tank here. The next station on the River Road is 80 miles away in Rio Grande Village, and it closes at 6 pm.

Lajitas

Resort pool and golf course on the edge of nothing

Luxury $240-$450/night

Eighteen miles west of the park along FM 170, Lajitas Golf Resort is the only true resort in the region, built on a former 1800s trading post site overlooking the Rio Grande. Rooms have private balconies, the pool is heated year-round, and the on-site Candelilla Cafe serves the most reliable breakfast in 100 miles. The Black Jack Crossing golf course is genuinely good if you want to play 18 holes with desert mountain views. Downsides: it is a 35-minute drive to the park entrance, and the resort feels isolated since there are no other businesses for miles. Best for travelers who want comfort over location.

Best for
Honeymoonersgolfersanyone who wants a real shower and a real bed
Walk times
  • Candelilla Cafe 3 min
  • resort pool 5 min
  • Black Jack Crossing pro shop 7 min
Skip if: You came to hike at dawn or want walkable dinner options
Local tip: Drive the FM 170 River Road from the resort toward Presidio at sunset. The 50-mile stretch is one of the most scenic drives in Texas.

How far in advance should I book Chisos Mountains Lodge?

Six to nine months for spring break (March), Thanksgiving week, and Christmas. Three months is enough for September and early December. The lodge has only 72 rooms, and reservations open 13 months out at chisosmountainslodge.com.

Is it worth staying inside the park versus Terlingua?

Yes if you are a serious hiker tackling Pinnacles or Emory Peak, since you save 60 to 90 minutes of daily driving. No if you want a real dinner, since the lodge restaurant is the only option and Terlingua has 5 better places within 25 miles.

Can I camp instead of getting a hotel?

Chisos Basin Campground costs $16 per night and books out 6 months ahead via recreation.gov. Rio Grande Village and Cottonwood are first-come for some sites. Backcountry permits are $12 and available the day-of at any visitor center.

What about staying in Marathon or Alpine instead?

Marathon is 70 miles from the north park entrance, Alpine is 100 miles. Both have nicer hotels (Gage Hotel in Marathon, Holland Hotel in Alpine) but you lose 2 hours of daily park time. Worth it only if you want a softer base for a 4 to 5 day trip.
