Kailua-Kona

Best all-round base for first-timers

Budget $0-$0/night

Kailua-Kona sits along Ali'i Drive, a flat coastal strip lined with coffee shops, dive operators, and happy-hour bars. Parking is easier than Honolulu. You walk from the pier at Kailua Wharf to Huggo's on the Rocks in under five minutes. Palani Road connects you inland to Costco and the airport fast. Snorkeling at Kahalu'u Beach Park is a seven-minute drive south on Ali'i Drive. The historic Ahu'ena Heiau sits right in town. Nights are warm and dry. Budget motels share the strip with mid-range condos. Not glamorous, but honest and convenient.

Kohala Coast (Waikoloa)

Where luxury resorts own the best beaches

Budget $0-$0/night

The Kohala Coast runs roughly from Waikoloa Beach Resort north to Mauna Kea Beach. This is where Hilton, Marriott, and the Four Seasons operate giant properties behind private gates. Waikoloa Beach Drive loops through the resort zone. Queens' MarketPlace and Kings' Shops cover dining and groceries within the resort bubble. 'Anaeho'omalu Bay, steps from the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, is one of the island's calmest swimming beaches. Kaupulehu Drive accesses the ultra-luxe Kuki'o area. Prices are high and unapologetically so. Rack rates above $500 are normal. If you are splashing out, this is the place.

Best for
Honeymoonsspecial occasionsfamilies who want a pool-and-beach vacation without renting a car every day
Walk times
  • 'Anaeho'omalu Bay beach 5 min
  • Queens' MarketPlace dining 8 min
  • Nearest non-resort beach (Hapuna) 15 min
Skip if: You are on any kind of budget or want local culture rather than a resort bubble
Local tip: Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area is 15 minutes north and ranks among Hawaii's best beaches. Non-resort guests can park for $10 and get the same sand.

Hilo

Rainforest, waterfalls, and the real Hawaii

Budget $0-$0/night

Hilo faces the wet east coast and gets 130 inches of rain a year. That keeps the crowds away and the prices low. Kamehameha Avenue runs along Hilo Bay with a row of old storefronts, a farmers market at the corner of Mamo Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and a clear view of Mauna Kea when skies clear. Banyan Drive curves around the bayfront with mid-size hotels under massive banyan trees. Rainbow Falls is a 10-minute drive up Waianuenue Avenue. You are 45 minutes from Volcanoes National Park. Waipio Valley overlook is 50 minutes north. Hilo is for travelers who want to see how locals actually live.

Best for
Budget travelersnature loversanyone visiting Volcanoes National Park for multiple daysrepeat Hawaii visitors
Walk times
  • Hilo Farmers Market on Mamo Street 10 min
  • Hilo Bay waterfront on Kamehameha Avenue 5 min
  • Rainbow Falls 10 min
Skip if: You hate rain or want beach weather every day. Hilo averages rain on 278 days a year.
Local tip: Check the Kilauea eruption webcam at 6am before driving to the park. If lava is active at Halema'uma'u, arrive before 9am to avoid the three-hour parking backup.

Volcano Village

Sleep inside the national park zone

Budget $0-$0/night

Volcano Village sits at 3,700 feet elevation on Old Volcano Road, less than two miles from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance. Air temperature runs 15 degrees cooler than the coast. Dozens of B&Bs and small lodges cluster along Haunani Road and Old Volcano Road, most surrounded by tree fern forest. The Volcano Winery is a four-minute drive east on Pi'ilani Street. Lava Tube Trail inside the park is 10 minutes from your door. No big hotels exist here, only independent properties. Nights can drop to 50F so pack a layer. You hear the volcano before you see it. This is the most unusual sleep on the island.

Best for
Volcano visitors staying two or more nightshikersphotographers chasing active lavaanyone who wants something genuinely different
Walk times
  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance 5 min
  • Kilauea Overlook 12 min

Where should I stay on Big Island for the first time?

Kailua-Kona is the safest first-timer base. Ali'i Drive puts snorkeling, restaurants, and a lively waterfront within walking distance. Prices are reasonable at $115-$290 per night and the airport is 10 minutes away. You can day-trip to Volcanoes National Park in under 90 minutes.

How far apart are the different areas of Big Island?

Big Island is 4,028 square miles, larger than Connecticut. Kailua-Kona to Hilo is 87 miles via the Saddle Road, about 90 minutes. Kona to Volcano Village runs 97 miles, roughly 95 minutes. Budget at least two hours of daily driving if you split your stay across the island.

Is Hilo worth staying in or should I just day-trip?

Stay at least one night if volcanoes are your priority. Hilo is 45 minutes from the park entrance versus 90 minutes from Kona. Evening eruption views are far better than midday visits, and parking inside the park fills by 10am on active days. Banyan Drive hotels start at $90, so the cost is low.

Which Big Island area is best for beaches?

The Kohala Coast wins on beach quality. Hapuna Beach State Park, Mauna Kea Beach, and the Waikoloa resort beaches rank among the best in the state. Non-resort visitors can access Hapuna for a $10 parking fee. Kailua-Kona has Kahalu'u Beach Park for snorkeling but no long sandy beaches. Hilo and Volcano Village have no swimmable beaches nearby.
