Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Big Sur, California

Big Sur has no downtown, no grid, no neighborhoods in the usual sense. It has 90 miles of Highway 1 and a handful of pockets worth understanding before you book.

Big Sur Valley

The hub everyone defaults to, and for good reason

Mid-range $150-$420/night

The closest thing Big Sur has to a center. The Big Sur River cuts through Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and within a quarter mile of Highway 1 you have the Big Sur Lodge, Glen Oaks motel, Ripplewood Resort, and the Big Sur River Inn restaurant. Sycamore Canyon Road branches east toward the gorge trail and Pfeiffer Falls (1.4 miles one-way). Nepenthe restaurant, perched 808 feet above sea level about a mile south on Highway 1, is the social anchor for the whole valley. Cell service is minimal. Grocery options are the General Store on Highway 1 or a 26-mile drive north to Carmel.

Ventana and Post Ranch Ridge

Where the fog rolls in and prices roll higher

Luxury $700-$1500/night

At roughly mile 30 on Highway 1, this ridge corridor sits 1,200 feet above the Pacific and holds two of California's most storied properties. Post Ranch Inn occupies 100 acres of coastal ridge with 39 units built into the hillside. Ventana Big Sur (Alila Ventana at 48123 Highway 1) has 59 rooms spread across redwood canyon and meadow with a full spa. The Ventana access road curves steeply off Highway 1 directly across from the Nepenthe parking lot. Hiking from here means Tan Bark Trail to Tin House (5.2 miles round trip) or Partington Cove (0.4 miles to the coastal tunnel). Both properties are designed to feel off-grid.

Northern Gateway (Rocky Point to Andrew Molera)

Closest to Carmel, easiest access, still wild enough

Luxury $200-$600/night

From Garrapata State Beach at mile marker 66 (about 7 miles south of Carmel) down to Andrew Molera State Park, this corridor is the easiest Big Sur entry point. Rocky Point Restaurant at mile 64 is a reliable lunch stop with outdoor cliffside seating. The Highlands Inn sits just inside the Carmel Highlands at 120 Highlands Drive, technically north of official Big Sur but priced as a gateway property. Most accommodation here includes vacation rentals and the Tickle Pink Inn at 155 Highland Drive. Carmel River Road connects back toward town. You are close enough to Carmel for a grocery run without backtracking deep into the wilderness.

Best for

Walk times
  • Garrapata State Beach 10 min
  • Andrew Molera Beach 30 min
  • Rocky Point vista overlook 5 min

Southern Big Sur (Lucia to Gorda)

The section most visitors skip, and some are glad they did not

Mid-range $120-$350/night

South of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park the road narrows, the crowds drop sharply, and lodging options shrink to a handful. Lucia Lodge at mile 13 (62 Lucia Lodge Road) has 10 cliff-edge cabins with unobstructed ocean views and a small diner. Kirk Creek Campground (managed by the Forest Service, $35 per night) sits on a bluff above a pocket beach about 4 miles south of Lucia. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road branches east here toward Fort Hunter Liggett. Gorda near the southern terminus has a gas station (most expensive per gallon in California) and a small bar. No ATM, no cell service anywhere in this corridor.

Best for
Photographerssolo travelersrepeat visitors who have done the valley and want the quiet version
Walk times
  • Kirk Creek Beach 5 min
  • Sand Dollar Beach 10 min
  • Salmon Creek Falls 45 min
Skip if: You are uncomfortable with complete isolation or dependent on a single gas station
Local tip: Sand Dollar Beach near Plaskett Creek is the largest sandy beach in Big Sur. Parking is $10 cash. Almost no one walks the south end past the rocks at low tide.

What is the best area to stay in Big Sur for first-timers?

Big Sur Valley is the default answer for a reason. You are within walking distance of Pfeiffer Falls, the Big Sur River Gorge, and Nepenthe restaurant. The Big Sur Lodge, Glen Oaks, and Ripplewood Resort sit within a half-mile stretch of Highway 1 near Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Book 3 to 4 months ahead for summer. If everything is sold out, the Northern Gateway near Carmel lets you day-trip south without the booking crunch.

Is Post Ranch Inn worth the price?

At $700 to $1,500 per night, Post Ranch Inn ranks among the 10 most expensive hotel stays in the United States. The 39 units are built into a coastal ridge at 1,200 feet with full Pacific views. Rates include breakfast and guided hikes. If you are celebrating something significant and can absorb the cost, yes. If you are comparing it to a $300 Glen Oaks cabin plus two dinners at Nepenthe, the math gets harder.

Does Big Sur have cell service?

Mostly no. The Big Sur Valley and Ventana Ridge have near-zero coverage from all major carriers. The Northern Gateway near Carmel has partial signal. The southern section around Lucia and Gorda has none. Download offline maps on AllTrails and Google Maps before you arrive. Some lodges have Wi-Fi including Glen Oaks and Big Sur Lodge, but speeds are satellite-slow. Plan to be unreachable for the duration.

When is Big Sur too crowded?

Memorial Day through Labor Day, Highway 1 slows to 26 miles per hour on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Pfeiffer Beach requires timed entry permits from late spring. The shoulder seasons, April and October, are the consensus favorites: fewer cars, cooler fog, and wildflowers in spring. January through March sees the most road closures from slides but also the fewest people by far.
