Casco Viejo

Medieval streets, pintxos bars, and the best first-night energy in the city

Mid-range $90-$160/night

The historic core where Bilbao began. Seven narrow medieval streets called Siete Calles converge near Plaza Nueva, a neoclassical square lined with pintxos bars that fill after 7pm. Calle Somera and Calle Barrenkale are the main pedestrian arteries, packed with txikiteros doing short wine rounds on weekend mornings. The covered Ribera Market is a two-minute walk. Most hotels are boutique, housed in renovated 19th-century buildings with small rooms and real character. Noise from nightlife on Calle Ronda runs past 2am on weekends. The Guggenheim is 12 flat minutes along the Nervion river. Best neighborhood for a first visit.

Best for
First-timerspintxos culturetravelers who want to walk everywhere
Walk times
  • Guggenheim Museum 12 min
  • Abando Train Station 8 min
  • Ribera Market 2 min
Skip if: Light sleepers, car travelers (no parking), anyone needing large modern rooms
Local tip: Plaza Nueva pintxos bars are tourist-priced. Walk one block to Calle Somera for the same food at lower prices and a local crowd.

Abando

Best location in the city, Gran Via hotels, transport hub at your door

Mid-range $130-$280/night

Bilbao's most central district and main hotel concentration. Gran Via Don Diego Lopez de Haro is the main boulevard, wide and walkable, lined with banks, department stores, and well-maintained early 20th-century facades. Plaza Moyua marks the geographic center, a circular plaza with a fountain and direct metro access. Calle Ercilla runs south with more mid-range options. Abando station is Bilbao's main rail hub, connecting to San Sebastian in 70 minutes and Madrid overnight. The Guggenheim is a flat 8-minute riverside walk. Rooms run expensive but the location earns it on short trips.

Indautxu

Quiet residential district, local lunch menus, no tourist markup

Mid-range $90-$180/night

The residential choice for travelers who want real neighborhood life without tourist pricing. Plaza Indautxu anchors the area, surrounded by local cafes that open at 7am for breakfast with Basque workers. Calle Iparraguirre leads toward the Guggenheim in 15 minutes on foot. Calle Licenciado Poza is lined with independent restaurants running three-course lunch menus for 12 to 14 euros. Minimal English menus. No souvenir shops. Hotels here are mostly three-star business properties or modern boutique conversions, consistently 20 to 30 percent cheaper than equivalent Abando options. Indautxu metro station gives quick access to everything else.

Best for
Familiestravelers staying four-plus nightsanyone tired of tourist-zone pricing
Walk times
  • Guggenheim Museum 15 min
  • Casco Viejo 18 min
  • Abando Train Station 12 min

Bilbao La Vieja

Cheapest beds near center, gentrifying fast, cross the bridge for everything

Budget $55-$100/night

The up-and-coming district across the Nervion from Casco Viejo. Calle San Francisco is the main artery, still rough around the edges but anchored by coffee shops, natural wine bars, and art spaces that opened after 2018. Plaza de la Encarnacion hosts a weekend flea market. The La Ribera bridge connects you to Casco Viejo in under five minutes on foot. Budget guesthouses and small hostels dominate, with a few newer boutique openings along the river. Street noise on Calle San Francisco runs late on weekends. Best for travelers who want the cheapest central beds and are comfortable with a neighborhood in transition.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo travelersart and nightlife crowd
Walk times
  • Casco Viejo 5 min
  • Ribera Market 4 min
  • Guggenheim Museum 18 min
Skip if: Families with young children, anyone uncomfortable with urban grit and late-night street noise
Local tip: The Ribera Market covered hall opens at 8am. Better pintxos than most bars at market prices. Cross the bridge and go straight in.

What is the best area to stay in Bilbao for first-timers?

Casco Viejo is the right call for a first visit. You are two minutes from Ribera Market, eight minutes from Abando station, and 12 minutes on foot from the Guggenheim along a flat riverside path. The Siete Calles medieval grid is compact and walkable. Budget $100 to $140 per night for a decent boutique hotel. The only real downside is weekend noise on Calle Ronda, which runs past 2am.

Is Bilbao La Vieja safe for tourists?

Yes, by 2026 standards it is generally safe during the day and early evening. Calle San Francisco had a rough reputation a decade ago but has improved significantly since 2018. Stay aware at night toward the far end of Calle San Francisco. The riverside streets near La Ribera bridge are fine at any hour. Skip this area if you are traveling with young children or want zero friction on your trip.

How far are Bilbao hotels from the Guggenheim?

Abando hotels are closest at 8 minutes on a flat riverside walk. Casco Viejo is 12 minutes. Indautxu is 15 minutes. Bilbao La Vieja is 18 minutes. The entire walk from any central neighborhood follows the Nervion river and is pleasant. There is no practical reason to take a taxi from any of these four areas.

When is the cheapest time to visit Bilbao?

November through February, excluding Christmas week. Semana Grande in mid-August is the worst time to visit for pricing, with hotels doubling and Casco Viejo becoming genuinely crowded. Abando hotels drop from $200 to around $130 per night in winter. Casco Viejo boutiques reach $80. The weather is cold and rainy but Bilbao is an indoor city built for it. The Guggenheim, pintxos bars, and Ribera Market are all better without summer crowds.
