Old Harbor

Step off the ferry and you are already there

Budget $0-$0/night

Old Harbor is where the main ferry from Point Judith docks, and most visitors spend their entire trip within five minutes of Water Street. Dodge Street and Spring Street run parallel to the waterfront, lined with restaurants, ice cream shops, and bike rentals. The Blue Dory Inn sits right on the harbor. Hotel Manisses is two blocks up on Spring Street, offering more privacy without losing walkability. Everything you need is here: groceries at Benson's, the weekly farmers market, and enough bars to fill a long weekend. Loud on summer nights near the docks.

Best for
First-timerscouples who want walkable nightlifeferry-dependent travelers
Walk times
  • Old Harbor ferry terminal 2 min
  • Crescent Beach south end 12 min
  • Mohegan Bluffs trailhead 40 min
Skip if: You need early nights. Summer weekends are loud until midnight near the docks.
Local tip: Rooms on the harbor-facing side of Water Street get ferry noise at 6am. Ask for a room facing Spring Street instead.

New Harbor / Great Salt Pond

Marina calm on the quieter side of the island

Budget $0-$0/night

New Harbor sits on the west side of the island around Great Salt Pond, where the seasonal ferry from Providence docks at Twin Maples. Payne's Dock is the social hub here, with kayak rentals, a raw bar, and boats mooring for the night. West Side Road connects the marina to a handful of guesthouses and cottage rentals. It is about 1.5 miles from Old Harbor's main strip, which sounds short until you are biking back after dinner with a headwind. The sunsets over the pond are genuinely excellent. Quieter crowd, more families and sailing types.

Best for
Sailorsfamilies with young kidsanyone who wants quiet evenings and good sunsets
Walk times
  • Payne's Dock 5 min
  • Old Harbor center 25 min
  • Town Beach 20 min
Skip if: You want to walk to restaurants and bars at night without planning around it.
Local tip: The New Harbor ferry from Providence runs seasonally June through Labor Day. Confirm Block Island Ferry schedules before booking around it.

Spring House Hill

Elevated, breezy, and slightly removed from the chaos

Budget $0-$0/night

Climb Spring Street from Old Harbor and within ten minutes you are on the ridge above the village, where the historic Spring House Hotel has stood since 1852. High Street and Atlantic Avenue cut across this area, offering wide ocean views on the south side and rolling fields toward the center of the island. It is close enough to Old Harbor to walk down for dinner but far enough that you do not hear the bars. The Atlantic Inn is also up here, with a wraparound porch and formal garden. Wind comes off the Atlantic most afternoons. Ideal for the Victorian atmosphere without paying ferry-landing prices.

Best for
Coupleshistory buffsanyone who wants ocean views without the noise
Walk times
  • Old Harbor waterfront 10 min
  • Crescent Beach south end 18 min
  • Southeast Light Road 25 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget. The two main hotels here are among the island's most expensive.
Local tip: The Spring House Hotel hosts live music on the wraparound porch on weekend evenings. You get the atmosphere for free if you are staying anywhere nearby.

Southeast Light / Mohegan Bluffs

Dramatic cliffs, no crowds, and a real sense of remoteness

Budget $0-$0/night

The southeast corner of Block Island is defined by the 200-foot clay bluffs at Mohegan Bluffs and the red 1875 Southeast Lighthouse on Southeast Light Road. A handful of B&Bs and vacation rentals sit on Mohegan Trail and the lanes running off it. You are genuinely isolated here, about 2 miles from Old Harbor, accessible by bike, moped, or one of the island's few taxis. The payoff is the view. Standing at the bluff edge looking southeast over open Atlantic is the best thing you can do on the island. Kids love the stairs down to the beach below the lighthouse. No convenience stores nearby.

Best for
Hikerslighthouse enthusiastsphotographerscouples wanting genuine isolation
Walk times
  • Mohegan Bluffs overlook 8 min
  • Southeast Lighthouse 12 min
  • Old Harbor center 45 min
Skip if: You rely on walking to restaurants or shops. You will need a bike or moped every single day.
Local tip: The 141-step staircase down to the beach below the bluffs is worth every step. Go at low tide and walk north toward Old Harbor along the shoreline.

What is the best area to stay on Block Island for first-timers?

Old Harbor. The ferry docks here, the best restaurants are within two blocks, and you can walk everywhere without renting a bike on day one. Stay on Spring Street rather than Water Street to avoid early ferry noise starting at 6am. Book at least 3 months ahead for July and August.

How do you get to Block Island and does arrival point affect where you should stay?

The main ferry runs from Point Judith, RI (55 minutes) and docks at Old Harbor. A seasonal high-speed ferry from New London, CT also arrives at Old Harbor. A slower seasonal ferry from Providence docks at New Harbor. If you arrive from Providence on summer weekends, New Harbor accommodation saves you the walk. Otherwise, Old Harbor is the practical default.

Is Block Island worth visiting outside of summer?

September and early October are genuinely excellent. Crowds drop sharply after Labor Day, but most restaurants stay open through Columbus Day weekend. Temperatures average 60 to 70F in September. Hotels drop 20 to 40 percent from peak summer rates. Most properties close after mid-October and reopen for Memorial Day weekend.

Do you need a car on Block Island?

No, and bringing one is expensive and complicated. Car spots on the ferry require advance reservations and cost $90 or more each way. Most visitors rent bikes ($35 to 45 per day from Old Harbor shops on Water Street and Chapel Street) or mopeds ($80 to 100 per day). The island is 7 miles long. A bike covers all four main areas without much difficulty.
