El Médano Beach

The party beach. Loud, fun, and never quiet.

Mid-range $80-$220/night

El Médano is Cabo's only swimmable beach and the center of tourist life. Camino Viejo a San José runs parallel to the sand, lined with hotels from budget posadas to mid-range all-inclusives. Beach clubs like Mango Deck operate from 10am until midnight. The water is calm enough for kayaking and paddleboarding. Walk to the Marina in 15 minutes. Expect bass-heavy music, roaming vendors selling boat tours, and ATVs on the access road at all hours. Spring break crowds are intense March through April. Off-season in September you get the same beach at half the price.

Best for
Party travelersspring breakersbudget-to-mid couples who want beach access without renting a car
Walk times
  • Marina boardwalk 15 min
  • Cabo Arch water taxi dock 12 min
  • Puerto Paraíso Mall 20 min
Skip if: You need sleep before 11pm or are traveling with young children overwhelmed by constant vendor noise
Local tip: Book on the north end of El Médano, closer to the Marina side. The south end near Playa Solmar faces open Pacific with rip currents and no vendors but no safe swimming either.

Marina District

Nightlife, restaurants, and boat tours all within two blocks.

Mid-range $100-$280/night

Blvd. Marina is the spine of Cabo's tourist core. Puerto Paraíso mall anchors the east end with restaurants and a cinema. Cabo Wabo sits at the corner of Blvd. Marina and Guerrero. Dozens of seafood restaurants line the boardwalk where sport fishing boats dock each morning by 7am. Hotels range from boutique inns on side streets off Lázaro Cárdenas to mid-scale towers directly on the waterfront. Taxis, tour operators, pharmacies, and ATMs are all on the same block. The marina smells like diesel and fish in the early morning. It quiets down around midnight on weekdays.

Best for
First-timerssolo travelersgroups who want nightlife within walking distance and no car rental
Walk times
  • El Médano Beach 15 min
  • Cabo Wabo 4 min
  • Sport fishing docks 8 min
Skip if: You want a quiet romantic trip or you are sensitive to late-night bar noise on weekends
Local tip: Stay one block off Blvd. Marina on Hidalgo or Morelos for cheaper rates and far less street noise. You lose nothing but the marina view and save $40-60 per night.

Pedregal

Gated hillside with Pacific views. Quiet and exclusive.

Luxury $180-$500/night

Pedregal sits on the rocky hill above the marina, accessed via Camino del Pedregal off Blvd. Marina. It is a gated residential and resort community with steep winding roads and cliff-side pools overlooking the Pacific. Hotel Hacienda Beach Resort sits at the foot of the hill where the marina meets the open ocean. The neighborhood has almost no street life or restaurants outside the resorts themselves. You need a taxi or rental car for everything beyond your hotel. At night the views of marina lights below are genuinely impressive. Rooms here run premium because of isolation and views, not convenience.

Best for
Couples on honeymoontravelers who want Pacific-view pools without driving 20 minutes out to the Corridor
Walk times
  • Marina boardwalk 18 min
  • El Médano Beach 28 min
  • Nearest pharmacy on Lázaro Cárdenas 22 min
Skip if: You want walkability, restaurant variety, or easy access to nightlife outside your resort
Local tip: The road into Pedregal is steep and the security gate requires ID. Some Uber drivers refuse the drop-off. Confirm your ride is willing before you book the hotel.

The Corridor

Luxury resorts on private beaches. Zero walking required or possible.

Luxury $300-$900/night

The Corridor is the 30-kilometer stretch of Highway 1 between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Flagship resorts sit at marked km points: One and Only Palmilla near km 27.5, Las Ventanas al Paraíso near km 19.5, Chileno Bay and Esperanza at km 15. Each property has its own beach, restaurants, and spa. Beaches like Playa Chileno (km 14) and Playa Santa María (km 12) are protected coves with calm snorkeling water and no vendors. A taxi from mid-Corridor to Cabo San Lucas marina runs $25-35 USD each way. Rental car is the practical choice if you plan to eat anywhere off-resort.

Best for
Luxury travelershoneymoonersfamilies who want a self-contained resort with calm swimmable water and private beach
Walk times
  • Cabo San Lucas Marina (taxi) 20 min
  • San José del Cabo Centro (taxi) 25 min
  • Playa Chileno from mid-Corridor resort (taxi) 10 min
Skip if: You want to explore Cabo nightlife regularly or your budget is above $200 but below $300 per night
Local tip: Corridor resorts quote rates in USD but add resort fees of $50-80 per night on top. Ask explicitly before booking. That fee is almost never shown in the online booking price.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Cabo San Lucas?

The Marina District is the easiest base for first-timers. You are within walking distance of restaurants, tour operators, beach clubs, and nightlife on Blvd. Marina. Hotels on side streets like Hidalgo or Morelos run $120-180 per night and cut the street noise without sacrificing location. El Médano works if you prioritize beach access over restaurant variety. Skip Pedregal and the Corridor for a first trip.

Which area in Cabo San Lucas has the calmest water for swimming?

El Médano Beach is the only swimmable beach inside Cabo San Lucas town. The Corridor beaches, specifically Playa Chileno near km 14 and Playa Santa María near km 12, are better for snorkeling with calmer protected coves and no vendors. Both are free public beaches accessible by taxi. Playa Solmar and the Pacific-facing beaches have strong currents and are not safe for swimming regardless of what they look like.

Is it worth staying in The Corridor vs downtown Cabo San Lucas?

It depends entirely on your trip style. Corridor resorts like Chileno Bay or One and Only Palmilla give you private beaches and full-service luxury from $350 per night. Downtown puts you in the middle of nightlife and restaurant variety from $120 per night but requires boat taxis or paid taxis to reach calm swimmable beaches. Honeymooners and families typically prefer the Corridor. Groups and first-timers prefer downtown.

How far is Pedregal from the beach in Cabo San Lucas?

Pedregal is about an 18-minute walk from the marina boardwalk and 28 minutes from El Médano on foot, but the roads are steep and winding. Most guests take taxis. Hotel Hacienda Beach Resort at the base of Pedregal has direct Pacific Ocean access, but that beach is rough water and not swimmable. Budget $12-15 per taxi trip to reach El Médano from mid-Pedregal.
