Tropea

The cliffside town everyone Instagrams

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Tropea sits on a sandstone cliff over a turquoise bay, and the photos do not lie. Stay in the centro storico between Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Largo Migliarese so you can walk to the Santa Maria dell'Isola viewpoint in five minutes. Via Roma has the gelato and the red onion shops. Skip hotels along the SS522 highway above town. They look close on a map but the walk down the staircases takes 15 minutes and back up in summer heat is brutal. Book the old town or book somewhere with a shuttle. July and August get packed. Aim for June or September.

Walk times
  • Spiaggia della Rotonda beach 4 min
  • Santa Maria dell'Isola 6 min
  • Tropea train station 8 min
Skip if: You want a quiet trip in August or hate stairs
Local tip: The granita di mandorla at Bar Ercole on Largo Galluppi beats the famous gelato spots and costs half as much.

Reggio Calabria

Real city, real ferry to Sicily

Mid-range $80-$180/night

Reggio is not pretty in the postcard sense, but it has the Bronzi di Riace at the National Archaeological Museum and a 2 kilometer seafront promenade that locals call the most beautiful kilometer in Italy. Stay between Corso Garibaldi and the Lungomare Falcomata. You can walk to the museum, the cathedral, and the port for the Messina ferry in under 15 minutes. Skip neighborhoods south of the stadium and around Archi. Reggio Lido station is closer to the action than Reggio Centrale, so check before booking that train deal.

Cosenza

The medieval old town nobody talks about

Budget $70-$160/night

Cosenza splits into two parts. The new town across the Busento river is forgettable. The centro storico on the hill is one of the prettiest in southern Italy, and almost empty of tourists. Stay near Piazza XV Marzo or along Corso Telesio. You can walk to the Norman castle in 15 minutes uphill, the cathedral in 5, and the Galleria Nazionale in 4. Avoid the area near the bus station and Viale Mancini. The new town has chain hotels but you will spend every evening getting back across the river. Stay in the old town and eat at Per...Bacco on Via Padolisi.

Skip if: You need a beach or hate hills
Local tip: The funicular up to the castle stopped running in 2023. It is a real climb. Wear actual shoes.

Sila National Park

Mountain pines and 25 degree summers

Mid-range $90-$200/night

When Calabria hits 38 degrees in August, Sila stays at 25. The plateau sits at 1,300 meters with pine forests, three lakes, and Italy's oldest national park. Base yourself in Camigliatello Silano or Lorica. Camigliatello has more restaurants along Via Roma and Via del Turismo. Lorica is quieter, on Lake Arvo. Skip San Giovanni in Fiore unless you want a working town with limited hotels. You need a car here. The bus from Cosenza runs twice a day and takes 90 minutes. Trails start right from both villages, including the Giganti della Sila old growth forest walk.

  • Lorica to Lake Arvo shore 2 min
  • Giganti della Sila trailhead 5 min

Which Calabria area has the best beaches?

Tropea wins for swimmable beaches with views. Spiaggia della Rotonda and Spiaggia del Cannone are both 5 minutes from the old town. Capo Vaticano, 10 kilometers south, has clearer water but you need a car or bus.

Do I need a car in Calabria?

For Tropea and Reggio, no. Trains run along the coast and both towns are walkable. For Sila and the inland villages, yes. Buses exist but run twice a day. Rentals start around $35 per day from Lamezia Terme airport.

When should I avoid Calabria?

August. Italian families take their entire month off and prices double in Tropea. Beaches get crowded by 9am. June and September give you the same weather, half the people, and 30 percent lower hotel rates.

Is Calabria safe for tourists?

Yes, the tourist areas are fine. The old narratives about the 'ndrangheta affect business, not visitors. Standard precautions in Reggio's outskirts and any city after dark apply, same as anywhere else in Italy.
