Beach Avenue and Victorian District

Historic beachfront, highest prices, worth it once

Luxury $250-$600/night

Beach Avenue runs the full length of the waterfront, giving every hotel on the block direct beach access. Congress Hall at 251 Beach Ave anchors the strip. Ocean Street, Hughes Street, and Stockton Place branch inland through a dense grid of ornate Victorian B&Bs. Columbia Avenue, two blocks from the water, has some of the most photographed 19th-century cottages in the country. The Promenade boardwalk fronts the whole strip. Washington Street Mall is a 5-minute walk west. Parking is brutal in July and August, so arrive by Friday afternoon or take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry foot passenger option instead.

Walk times
  • Cape May Beach 1 min

West Cape May

Residential borough, real savings, local feel

Mid-range $120-$280/night

West Cape May is a separate borough just west of Cape May proper. Cross over via Sunset Boulevard or Broadway and the density drops immediately. Stevens Street and Elmira Street have vacation rental houses popular with families booking by the week. Willow Creek Winery sits at 152 Sunset Blvd with tastings and a farm market. The Cape May Bird Observatory on East Lake Drive draws serious birders during spring and fall migration. Broadway has grocery stores, a laundromat, and local diners with no tourist markup. The main beach is a 15-minute walk or a short bike ride east. Rates run 30 to 40 percent below beachfront pricing.

Cape May Point

Silent tip of the cape, lighthouse, shell beach

Mid-range $130-$300/night

Cape May Point is its own borough at the very southern end of the peninsula. Lighthouse Avenue leads directly to the 1859 Cape May Lighthouse, 157 feet tall with views to the Delaware coast. Lake Drive circles Cape May Point State Park, where a WWII concrete observation bunker sits at the shore and birding trails cut through coastal scrub. Pavilion Avenue and Alexander Avenue have small Victorian cottages available as weekly rentals. There is no commercial strip, no bars, no noise after 9pm. The shell beach at the very tip is the best spot in New Jersey to find Cape May Diamonds, the quartz pebbles locals collect.

Best for
Couples wanting seclusionbirders during peak migrationanyone who finds the main town too crowded
Walk times
  • Cape May Lighthouse 4 min
  • Shell Beach at Delaware Bay tip 10 min

What is the best area to stay in Cape May, NJ for first-timers?

Beach Avenue and the Victorian District. You are one minute from the sand, surrounded by Cape May's famous 19th-century architecture, and everything walkable. Yes, you will pay $300 to $500 per night in summer. But you will not need your car for three days, and that matters in a town where parking lots fill by 10am on weekends. Congress Hall at 251 Beach Ave is the landmark hotel. The Virginia Hotel on Jackson Street is smaller and slightly calmer.

How far in advance should I book Cape May hotels?

For July and August weekends, book 3 to 4 months out. The Victorian District fills completely by late spring for peak summer weekends. Columbus Day weekend in October books even faster because the weather is perfect and the crowds thin out. Shoulder season, May, June, September, and October, is much easier. Mid-week arrivals in any month give you 20 to 30 percent better rates and real availability within 2 to 3 weeks notice.

Is Cape May, NJ walkable?

The core of Cape May, Beach Avenue to Washington Street Mall and the side streets in between, is very walkable. You can cover it in 20 minutes end to end. West Cape May adds 15 minutes of walking. Cape May Point is 2.5 miles from the main beach and requires a bike or car. The free Cape May MAC shuttle runs Washington Street to the beach in season, but the town is small enough that most visitors walk everywhere and never move their car from Friday arrival to Sunday departure.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Cape May, NJ?

West Cape May consistently runs 30 to 40 percent below beachfront rates. A house on Stevens Street or Elmira Street that sleeps six costs roughly what a single Victorian B&B room costs on Beach Avenue. Cape May Point is also cheaper, starting around $130 per night, but you need a car or bike to reach the beach and restaurants. If budget is the priority, book a vacation rental in West Cape May for a week and bike to the beach each morning.
