Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Catalina Island

Four areas, four very different trips. Pick wrong and you'll spend the whole stay on a golf cart or a shuttle van. Here's how locals actually break it down.

Avalon (Crescent Avenue)

The walkable heart of the island

Luxury $220-$480/night

Crescent Avenue runs the length of the harbor, and almost everything you need sits on it or one block back. The Pleasure Pier, Descanso Beach Club shuttle stop, and the Catalina Casino anchor the strip. Stay near Sumner Avenue or Catalina Avenue and you can walk to dinner at Bluewater Grill, breakfast at Original Jack's Country Kitchen, and the Avalon ferry terminal in under ten minutes. Streets climb fast above Beacon Street, so check elevation before booking. Golf cart rentals on Pebbly Beach Road let you reach the Botanical Garden without the hill walk.

Best for
First-time visitors who want to ditch the cart and walk everywhere
Walk times
  • Pleasure Pier 2 min
  • Catalina Casino 8 min
  • Descanso Beach Club 15 min
Skip if: You want quiet. Crescent Avenue gets loud until 11pm in summer.
Local tip: Book a room facing the hills, not the harbor. Harbor-view rooms cost 40% more and the foghorn runs all night.

Hamilton Cove

Gated quiet, two miles north of town

Luxury $280-$550/night

Hamilton Cove sits on the cliff just past Descanso Canyon Road, a private community with rental villas and one boutique property. You're outside Avalon proper, which means no foot traffic, no late-night crowds, and a private beach club with kayaks. The trade-off: you need a golf cart or the Garibaldi shuttle to reach restaurants. Walk time to Crescent Avenue is 35 minutes along the waterfront path past the Casino. Most rentals here are two-bedroom villas, so it works better for couples splitting a place than solo travelers. The pool overlooks the channel and gets full sun until 4pm.

Best for
Couplesanniversariesanyone who wants a private patio
Walk times
  • Hamilton Cove Beach 3 min
  • Catalina Casino 25 min
  • Crescent Avenue 35 min
Skip if: You're here for one night or you don't want to deal with cart logistics
Local tip: Reserve the cart at the same time as the villa. Hamilton Cove rentals without a cart get stuck waiting for shuttles that run every 40 minutes.

Two Harbors

The other side of the island

Luxury $180-$340/night

Two Harbors is a 90-minute boat ride from Avalon or a separate ferry from San Pedro. Population around 200. One general store, one restaurant (Harbor Reef), one hotel (Banning House Lodge), and a campground. The isthmus connects Cat Harbor and Isthmus Cove, so you walk five minutes shore to shore. Trans-Catalina Trail starts here, and the dive sites at Bird Rock are 15 minutes by boat. No nightlife, no shopping, no cell service in spots. Stay here if you want hiking, diving, or genuine quiet. Banning House sits on the hill above the cove with a porch view of both harbors.

Best for
Hikersdiverspeople allergic to crowds
Walk times
  • Harbor Reef Restaurant 4 min
  • Trans-Catalina trailhead 6 min
  • Cat Harbor beach 8 min
Skip if: You want restaurant choice or arrived after 6pm (Harbor Reef is the only option)
Local tip: The Cyclone shore boat from Avalon is faster and cheaper than the round-trip ferry from San Pedro if you're already on the island.

Descanso Bay

Beach club access, ten minutes from town

Luxury $240-$420/night

Descanso Canyon Road climbs out of Avalon past the Casino and drops into Descanso Bay. The bay holds the Descanso Beach Club, with rentable cabanas, paddleboards, and a full bar on the sand. Aurora Hotel and a handful of guesthouses sit on the road above. You're 12 minutes walk to Crescent Avenue along the waterfront, and the beach is 200 feet from the door. Fewer dining options up here, but the walk back from dinner along the harbor at night is the best part. Cabanas at the beach club book out two weeks ahead in summer, so reserve when you book the room.

Best for
Beach-focused tripsfamilies with younger kids
Walk times
  • Descanso Beach 2 min
  • Catalina Casino 5 min
  • Crescent Avenue 12 min
Skip if: You hate hills. The walk back up Descanso Canyon Road is steep.
Local tip: Buy the beach club day pass with your room booking, not at the gate. Hotel rate is around $25, walk-up is $45 in peak season.
