Seven Mile Beach

The postcard strip. Book early or pay the price.

Luxury $300-$800/night

Seven Mile Beach runs along West Bay Road from George Town north toward West Bay village. The sand is powder-white and the water is flat, clear, and warm year-round. Resorts like the Westin Grand Cayman and Kimpton Seafire line the beachfront. Restaurants cluster around Buckingham Square and along the beach road. Bars, dive shops, and watersports are all walkable. The strip gets busy December through April. Outside peak season you will find better rates. Parking is free at most resorts. No public transport to speak of, so rent a car or budget for taxis.

George Town

Capital city. Cruise crowds by day, calm by night.

Mid-range $150-$350/night

George Town sits on the southwest coast around Harbour Drive and Cardinal Avenue. Cruise ships dock here from October to April, flooding streets around Harbour Drive and Edward Street until early afternoon. After 4pm it empties out and turns almost residential. Hotels run significantly cheaper than Seven Mile Beach. Duty-free shopping lines Cardinal Avenue. Decent local restaurants sit on Shedden Road. Eden Rock dive site is a 10-minute walk from Harbour Drive. Not glamorous, but practical if you are here for diving rather than lounging on the beach.

Best for
Diversbudget travelersbusiness visitorsanyone who wants lower rates and does not mind daytime cruise crowds
Walk times
  • Harbour Drive cruise dock 5 min
  • Eden Rock dive site 10 min
  • Seven Mile Beach south end 20 min
Skip if: You want direct beach access or evening atmosphere
Local tip: Book on Shedden Road rather than Harbour Drive. Quieter at night, same distance to everything, slightly cheaper.

East End

The real Cayman. Bring a car and stock up on groceries first.

Mid-range $100-$250/night

East End stretches along Queens Highway on the island's eastern tip, past Bodden Town through communities like Breakers and Colliers into East End village itself. The coastline is rugged and windward, with blowholes at the ironshore cliffs near Colliers Beach and reef close to shore. Diving the East End Wall is among the best in the Caribbean. Morritts Resort is the main hotel option. The drive from George Town takes 40 minutes. Guesthouses and rental villas fill in the rest. Grocery stores are sparse here, so load up in George Town before heading east.

Best for
Diverscouples seeking seclusionreturn visitors who have already done Seven Mile Beach
Walk times
  • East End blowholes 10 min
  • Colliers Beach 5 min
  • George Town 40 min
Skip if: You need restaurants, nightlife, or shopping within walking distance
Local tip: The east side catches trade winds, so expect choppy water on the beach but excellent visibility for wall diving.

West Bay

Residential and relaxed. Quieter than Seven Mile but still convenient.

Mid-range $150-$400/night

West Bay is the residential district directly north of Seven Mile Beach, accessible via West Bay Road continuing into Northwest Point Road. Boggy Sand Road follows a stretch of local coastline away from the resort strip. Hell, the famous ironshore coral formation, sits on the road past Governors Harbour. The Cayman Turtle Centre on Northwest Point Road is a 10-minute drive. A handful of condos and vacation rentals line the coast. Fewer restaurants than Seven Mile Beach, but prices drop noticeably. Public buses connect West Bay with George Town along West Bay Road throughout the day.

Best for
Familieslonger staystravelers wanting a local neighborhood feel with beach access nearby
Walk times
  • Seven Mile Beach north end 10 min
  • Cayman Turtle Centre on Northwest Point Road 10 min
  • George Town 25 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants and full hotel amenities on the doorstep
Local tip: Rent a condo on Boggy Sand Road for a fraction of Seven Mile Beach prices. Ten minutes from the main strip without the noise or the nightly markup.

What is the best area to stay in Cayman Islands for first-timers?

Seven Mile Beach. The sand is genuinely exceptional and everything is set up for tourists. Stay on the southern end near the South Church Street intersection for better rates than the northern section. Expect to pay $300 to $600 per night at a mid-tier resort. Book at least 3 months ahead for December through April travel.

Is George Town worth staying in, or just visiting for the day?

Worth staying if you are here to dive. Eden Rock and Devils Grotto are a 10-minute walk from Harbour Drive, and George Town hotels run $150 to $250 per night versus $400 or more on Seven Mile Beach. Avoid it if you want the beach at your door. Cruise crowds clear out by 4pm so evenings are quiet.

How far is Seven Mile Beach from George Town?

About 3 kilometers and a 10-minute drive. The southern tip of Seven Mile Beach almost touches the northern edge of George Town. A taxi runs around $15 CI, which is roughly $18 USD. No reliable public bus covers this route, so budget for taxis or rent a car for the week.

Is East End worth the 40-minute drive from George Town?

For divers, absolutely. East End Wall is one of the best wall dives in the Caribbean and the area stays uncrowded. Drive the Queens Highway east past Bodden Town to reach it. Stay at Morritts or rent a villa. Bring groceries because restaurant options are limited to a handful of local spots.
