Downtown Mall

Best overall for walkability and the full Charlottesville experience

Mid-range $175-$340/night

The Downtown Mall is a seven-block pedestrian street running along Main Street between 1st and 7th Streets NW. You can walk to over 120 restaurants, bars, and shops without crossing a parking lot. The Omni Charlottesville sits directly on the mall. The Quirk Hotel is one block south on Water Street. Violet Crown Cinema anchors the west end. The IX Art Park sits at the east end on 2nd Street NE. Weekends fill up fast at the outdoor tables. Brick facades line both sides of the pedestrian zone. Parking is available in garages off Market Street. Noise from bars carries until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Best for
First-time visitorscouplesanyone prioritizing walkability and restaurant density
Walk times
  • IX Art Park on 2nd Street NE 5 min
  • UVA Rotunda via University Ave 25 min

The Corner and UVA Grounds

Stay here if UVA is the reason you came to Charlottesville

Mid-range $120-$240/night

The Corner is a concentrated strip of restaurants, bars, and shops along University Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets NW, right at the western edge of UVA's grounds. The Graduate Charlottesville sits at Emmet Street and Ivy Road, about a 12-minute walk to the Rotunda. Rugby Road runs parallel one block south and sees heavy foot traffic during home football games. Alderman Road Library and UVA Medical Center are within a 15-minute walk. Hotel rates spike hard during May graduation weekend and fall football Saturdays. Book those windows months out or expect nothing under $300. Outside those dates, rates drop and parking is manageable.

Best for
UVA familiesgraduation tripsmedical center visitorsanyone on UVA business
Walk times
  • UVA Rotunda at University and Rugby 12 min
  • Corner bars and restaurants on University Ave 8 min
  • Downtown Mall pedestrian street 22 min

Belmont

The residential neighborhood with the best restaurant block in the city

Mid-range $110-$190/night

Belmont sits just east of downtown, centered on Monticello Avenue and Hinton Avenue SE. Lampo on Monticello Avenue makes Neapolitan pizza that draws lines every night of the week. Mas Tapas on Hinton Avenue has been a local anchor for over 20 years. Citizen Burger Bar on Avon Street handles the casual end. Hotels here are limited, mostly smaller mid-range properties off Avon Street and Monticello Avenue. A 12-minute walk across the bridge on Water Street gets you to the Downtown Mall. Moore's Creek Trail starts three blocks in for morning runs. It is quieter than downtown and almost entirely residential outside the restaurant strip.

Best for
Foodiesrepeat visitors who have already done the malltravelers who prefer residential quiet over tourist concentration
Walk times
  • Lampo pizza on Monticello Ave 4 min
  • Downtown Mall via Water Street bridge 12 min
  • Moore's Creek Trail access on Avon Street 8 min
Skip if: It is your first trip and you want everything within a short walk. The neighborhood rewards local knowledge.
Local tip: Arrive at Lampo when they open or plan on a 45-minute wait. No reservations, no exceptions.

Best value for families and anyone renting a car for winery day trips

Hampton Inn, Residence Inn, and Courtyard are all within a half-mile of each other here. You are 18 minutes on foot to the Rotunda and 25 minutes from the Downtown Mall. Barracks Road Shopping Center on Barracks Road has a grocery store, which matters on longer stays. Georgetown Road connects north toward wine country routes including King Family Vineyards and Pippin Hill, both about 25 minutes by car. Parking is free and easy. Rates run $60 to $80 below the Downtown Mall for comparable quality most nights.

What is the best area to stay in Charlottesville, VA for a first visit?

The Downtown Mall is the right call for first-timers. You walk to 120-plus restaurants along Main Street, the Omni and Quirk hotels are right on the pedestrian zone, and UVA is a 25-minute walk from your front door. Book upper floors at the Omni for views toward the Rotunda. Rates run $175-340 per night depending on season.

How far is Monticello from hotels in Charlottesville?

Monticello is about 3 miles southeast of the Downtown Mall, a 10-minute drive via Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway). There is no practical walking route. Adult admission runs around $35. Budget 3-4 hours for the full house and grounds tour. Most downtown hotels can connect you with transport if you do not have a rental car.

When should I avoid visiting Charlottesville?

UVA graduation weekend in mid-May and home football Saturdays in the fall. Rates double or triple citywide and rooms sell out months ahead. The Virginia Film Festival in late October and the Fridays After Five outdoor concert series also push prices up and crowd the Downtown Mall significantly.

Is Charlottesville worth more than one night?

Two nights minimum. Monticello takes a half day. The wine trail west of town (King Family Vineyards, Pippin Hill, and Veritas are all within 30 minutes by car) fills another full day. Shenandoah National Park entrance at Rockfish Gap is about 30 minutes west on I-64. One night only makes sense if you are passing through.
