Pisté

Walk to the ruins, skip the crowds

Budget $35-$90/night

Pisté sits 3km from the east entrance on Highway 180, the closest town to the site. Calle 15 runs through the center with basic restaurants and small hotels. You can reach the ruins gate in under 10 minutes by taxi or rented bike. Hotels here are simple concrete blocks, nothing fancy, but you get the critical early-morning advantage. Beat the tour buses by arriving at 8am when light is perfect and the place is quiet. Street vendors on Avenida Juárez sell tamales for 20 pesos at dawn. No ATMs in town, so bring cash from Valladolid before you arrive.

Best for
Early risersbudget travelersanyone who wants to beat the 10am tour bus crowds
Walk times
  • Chichen Itza east entrance 30 min
  • Cenote Ik Kil 8 min
  • Valladolid 35 min
Skip if: You want atmosphere, decent restaurants, or reliable ATMs within walking distance
Local tip: Rent a bike from Hostal Chichen for 100 pesos and ride to the ruins at 8am sharp. The light through the structures in the first hour is unlike anything you get by midday.

Valladolid

Colonial charm, 40 minutes from the ruins

Budget $50-$180/night

Valladolid is the best all-around base for most travelers. The Parque Principal on Calle 41 anchors a walkable colonial center with good restaurants and a cenote within walking distance. Cenote Zaci on Calle 36 costs 35 pesos and takes 10 minutes on foot. The main stretch of Calle 41 between Calles 38 and 42 has everything from taco stands to proper sit-down spots. Hotel Zaci and Casa San Roque both sit within two blocks of the square. Taxis to Chichen Itza leave from the bus station on Calle 39 and cost around 350 pesos for the 40-minute ride. ADO buses also run regularly.

Mérida

Best city base, two hours from the ruins

Budget $60-$250/night

Mérida is Yucatan's capital and the most comfortable city base for combining Chichen Itza with the wider peninsula. Paseo de Montejo, the tree-lined boulevard, has upscale hotels and reliable restaurants. The historic center around Plaza Grande on Calle 60 has solid budget and mid-range options within walking distance of markets and museums. Most organized tours leave Mérida at 8am and return by 4pm, stopping at a cenote. If you drive yourself, Highway 180D takes two hours and costs around 180 pesos in tolls. Mérida makes sense if you plan to visit Uxmal or the Puuc Route on the same trip.

Best for
Multi-day Yucatan itinerariescomfort seekerstravelers combining ruins with colonial city culture
Walk times
  • Plaza Grande 5 min
  • Mercado Lucas de Gálvez 10 min
  • Chichen Itza 120 min
Skip if: Chichen Itza is your only stop and you want to minimize daily commute time

Cancún Hotel Zone

Beach resort base, three hours away

Mid-range $80-$400/night

Most Cancún visitors do Chichen Itza as a single day trip via organized tour departing from Boulevard Kukulcán in the Zona Hotelera. Tours pick up from major hotels between 6:30 and 7:30am and return around 6pm. The drive each way is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. ADO buses from the main Cancún terminal on Avenida Tulum in downtown take the same 2.5 hours for around 250 pesos each way. That is roughly half the price of hotel tour packages. Stay in Cancún only if you are already booked there for the beach and want to add one ruins day to the trip.

Best for
Beach-first travelers adding a ruins daylarge resort groups on organized tours
Walk times
  • Hotel Zone beach 2 min
  • Cancún bus terminal downtown 25 min
  • Chichen Itza 165 min
Skip if: Chichen Itza is your main reason for visiting. The commute is draining in Yucatan heat.
Local tip: Skip the hotel tour packages at 1,800 pesos per person. Book directly with ADO or Turibus for the same route at half the cost. You get the same stops.

What is the closest town to stay near Chichen Itza?

Pisté is the closest, about 3km from the east entrance on Highway 180. Hotels start at $35 per night and a taxi to the ruins gate takes under 10 minutes. The downside is limited food options and no ATMs. Bring cash from Valladolid or Mérida before you arrive or you will be stuck paying inflated hotel rates for everything.

Is Valladolid or Pisté better for visiting Chichen Itza?

Valladolid wins for most travelers. It is 40 minutes from the ruins but gives you a proper colonial town with Cenote Zaci a 10-minute walk from the Parque Principal, reliable restaurants on Calle 41, and ATMs. Pisté is closer but dull with almost nothing to do after the ruins. Choose Pisté only if catching the absolute earliest entry time is your top priority.

Can you do Chichen Itza as a day trip from Cancún?

Yes, but it is a long day. The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way. Most hotel tours from Boulevard Kukulcán depart at 7am and return by 6pm. ADO buses from Cancún's downtown terminal on Avenida Tulum run the same route for around 250 pesos each way, which is far cheaper than the 1,800 peso hotel tour packages that cover the same stops.

How much does it cost to enter Chichen Itza in 2024?

The federal entrance fee is 572 pesos (about $34 USD) plus a Yucatan state fee of 594 pesos, totaling roughly $70 USD combined. Buy tickets online at inah.gob.mx before you arrive because weekend slots sell out by midweek. The site opens at 8am and gets crowded after 10am when buses from Cancún and Mérida arrive in volume.
