Clearwater Beach

The white-sand strip everyone comes for

Luxury $220-$480/night

This is the postcard. Two miles of powder sand along Mandalay Avenue and South Gulfview Boulevard, with Pier 60 anchoring the north end and the daily sunset celebration drawing crowds at 7pm. Stay between Baymont Street and Hamden Drive and you can walk to Frenchy's Rockaway Grill for grouper, hit Pier 60 Park for the playground, and roll back to your room sandy. The Jolley Trolley runs every 30 minutes for $2.25 if you want to skip the parking nightmare. Spring break weeks (mid-March through mid-April) get loud and prices spike 40 percent. Book a room facing west for the sunset, not east toward the marina.

Best for
First-time visitorsbeach loversanyone who wants to walk to dinner
Walk times
  • Pier 60 to Frenchy's Rockaway 4 min
  • Mandalay Avenue shops to the sand 2 min
  • South end (Sand Key bridge) to Pier 60 25 min
Skip if: You hate crowds or you are coming during spring break
Local tip: Park at the Beach Walk garage on Coronado Drive, not the Pier 60 lot. Same price, half the wait to exit.

Sand Key

The quiet beach south of the bridge

Luxury $180-$380/night

Cross the Clearwater Pass Bridge and the energy drops by half. Sand Key Park has the same Gulf water and powder sand as Clearwater Beach but without the t-shirt shops. The strip along Gulf Boulevard is mostly low-rise condos and a few resort towers, so you get sunset views without the rooftop bar noise. There is no walkable dining scene here, plan on driving five minutes back over the bridge or south to Indian Rocks Beach for Crabby Bill's. The Sand Key Park itself charges $5 to park if you are not staying at a hotel with beach access. Great choice for a second visit when you already know you do not need Pier 60 nightly.

Best for
Couplesreturn visitorsanyone who wants quiet sunsets
Walk times
  • Sand Key Park entrance to the water 3 min
  • Gulf Boulevard to nearest restaurant (Columbia Cafe) 8 min
  • Sand Key bridge back to Clearwater Beach action 15 min
Skip if: You want to walk to bars or restaurants at night
Local tip: The Marriott Sand Key has public beach access on the south side. Park there for the day even if you are staying elsewhere.

Island Estates

Family base near the aquarium

Mid-range $160-$320/night

Island Estates sits on Memorial Causeway between the mainland and Clearwater Beach, which means you are five minutes from the sand and right next to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where Winter the dolphin lived. Island Way Grill on Island Way is the dinner spot locals book for birthdays. The neighborhood is mostly residential with a Publix on Island Way that saves you a small fortune on snacks and beer compared to beach prices. You will need a car or the Jolley Trolley to actually reach the beach, but you trade that for parking that is not a battle and rooms that run 30 percent cheaper than oceanfront. Good pick for families with kids under 10.

Best for
Familiesaquarium visitorstravelers who want a kitchen and a Publix nearby
Walk times
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium to most hotels 6 min
  • Publix on Island Way to Island Way Grill 4 min
  • Island Estates to Clearwater Beach sand 15 min
Skip if: You want oceanfront views from your balcony
Local tip: Buy your sunscreen and floats at the Publix on Island Way, not the beach shops. Saves about 60 percent.

Downtown Clearwater

Budget option on the mainland

Mid-range $95-$170/night

Downtown Clearwater along Cleveland Street and Court Street is the cheapest place to sleep in the area, hands down. You can find a clean chain hotel under $100 most weeks. The trade-off is real, you are 4.5 miles from the beach and the area itself has limited charm beyond Capitol Theatre and a couple of breweries on Cleveland Street. The Coachman Park redo on the waterfront is genuinely nice for a sunset walk along Drew Street. The Jolley Trolley connects downtown to the beach but takes 25 to 35 minutes. Only worth it if you have a rental car, plan to drive to St. Petersburg or Tampa anyway, and want to save $150 a night.

Best for
Road-trippersbusiness travelersbudget-conscious couples with a car
Walk times
  • Cleveland Street to Coachman Park waterfront 5 min
  • Capitol Theatre to nearest brewery (Crooked Thumb) 7 min
  • Downtown to Clearwater Beach by car 12 min
Skip if: You expected to walk to the beach
Local tip: Skip the Memorial Causeway during the 4pm to 6pm window. Take Court Street to Belleair Causeway south instead, adds two miles but cuts 20 minutes off the drive.

Which Clearwater area is closest to the beach?

Clearwater Beach itself, obviously. After that, Sand Key and Island Estates are both within a five-minute drive. Downtown Clearwater is 4.5 miles away, about 12 minutes by car or 30 by trolley.

Is Clearwater Beach walkable without a car?

Yes, if you stay between Baymont Street and Hamden Drive. You can walk to Pier 60, Frenchy's, the marina, and at least 15 restaurants. The Jolley Trolley fills in the rest for $2.25 a ride.

When is the worst time to book Clearwater Beach?

Mid-March through mid-April for spring break, prices jump 40 percent and noise levels triple. July 4th week is also rough. September is the quietest and cheapest, but watch hurricane forecasts.

Should I stay in Clearwater or St. Pete Beach?

Clearwater Beach for the bigger sand strip, livelier walkable scene, and Pier 60 sunsets. St. Pete Beach for slightly calmer crowds, the Don CeSar pink castle, and easier access to downtown St. Petersburg art museums. Twenty-five minutes apart by car.
