01

Corfu Town (Kerkyra)

Venetian alleyways, real restaurants, and the island's best nightlife

Mid-range $80-$300/night

Corfu Town is the obvious base and for good reason. The UNESCO-listed Old Town packs 500 years of Venetian architecture into streets barely wide enough for two people. Stay near Spianada Square and you are 4 minutes from the Old Fortress, 7 from the Liston arcade where locals drink coffee under French-style arches on Kapodistriou Street. The Campiello quarter above the port is where residents actually live. Skip the waterfront tourist traps and eat on Guilford Street instead. Ferries leave from the New Port, 15 minutes on foot from most central hotels. Buses to the whole island depart from San Rocco Square.

Best for
First-timersculture loverssolo travelerscouples who want nightlife options
Walk times
  • Old Fortress (Paleo Frourio) 5 min
  • New Port (ferries to mainland) 15 min
  • Campiello medieval quarter 8 min
Skip if: You want a beach outside your hotel door or need quiet after 11pm in summer
Local tip: Rooms above Kapodistriou Street get street noise until 2am. Ask specifically for a courtyard-facing room when booking.

Paleokastritsa

Six coves, monastery views, and the most photographed water in Greece

Budget $60-$200/night

Paleokastritsa sits 26km west of Corfu Town on a jagged headland with 6 connected coves. The water is cold and turquoise even in August. The 13th-century Theotokos Monastery crowns the clifftop above the main beach. Most hotels cluster along the single road that winds down from the village to the coves. Angelokastro Byzantine fortress is a 10-minute drive north and worth every minute. Boat trips leave from the main jetty to sea caves only reachable by water, costing around 10 euros. The village has 4 tavernas worth eating at. Everything else caters purely to day-trippers.

Best for
Couplesswimmersphotographersanyone who prioritizes scenery over nightlife and variety
Walk times
  • Theotokos Monastery 12 min
  • Main beach jetty (boat cave tours) 5 min
  • Angelokastro castle 10 min
Skip if: You need good restaurant variety or want to explore the island without renting a car
Local tip: The first cove, Agios Spyridon, is 200 meters from the main beach crowds and almost always quieter.

Sidari

Budget-friendly north coast with Canal d'Amour and Diapontian island ferry access

Budget $40-$120/night

Sidari is 38km north of Corfu Town, heavily British, and built entirely for value. The main strip along Agios Stefanou Street has supermarkets, tavernas, and car rental shops within 300 meters of each other. Canal d'Amour, the sandstone rock formation with natural swimming pools, is 500 meters east of the center. The ferry to the Diapontian islands (Erikoussa, Mathraki, Othoni) leaves from Sidari port on Tuesdays and Thursdays for around 18 euros return. Roda village, 6km east, is quieter and better for families with small children. Beaches here are sandy and shallow with calm water.

Best for
Budget travelersBritish package holidaymakersfamilies with young children who want safe shallow water
Walk times
  • Canal d'Amour rock formations 10 min
  • Sidari port (Diapontian island ferries) 8 min
  • Supermarket on Agios Stefanou Street 3 min
Skip if: You want authentic Greek atmosphere or easy access to Corfu Town without paying for car hire
Local tip: Hire a car for at least two days. Sidari is 38km from town and completely cut off without wheels.

Benitses

Old fishing village 12km south of town, quiet pebble beach, and Roman ruins nobody visits

Budget $50-$150/night

Benitses was Corfu's main package resort in the 1980s. It cleaned up, slowed down, and became genuinely pleasant. The village port has a line of fish tavernas on the waterfront. Walk 400 meters north along Benitses Road and you reach the 2nd-century Roman baths, ruins that most visitors walk straight past. The beach is pebbly and narrow but calm. Moraitika, 3km south, has a longer sandy beach and better family accommodation. Corfu Town is 20 minutes by bus. Line 6 runs every 45 minutes and costs 1.80 euros each way from the stop 4 minutes from the harbor.

Best for
Couples wanting quietrepeat Corfu visitorsanyone who hates crowds and wants a local-facing base
Walk times
  • Roman baths (2nd century) 8 min
  • Village port and fish tavernas 5 min
  • Bus stop line 6 to Corfu Town 4 min
Skip if: You want a sandy beach or any kind of nightlife beyond one or two bars
Local tip: The fish at Stavros taverna on the port is cheaper than anything you will find in Corfu Town.

Where should first-time visitors to Corfu stay?

Corfu Town. You are central, walkable, and you see the actual island rather than a resort bubble. Book near Spianada Square for the best access to the Old Town, New Port ferries, and real restaurants on Guilford Street. Budget $100-150 per night for a decent hotel in peak season.

Which area of Corfu is cheapest to stay in?

Sidari in the north. Clean doubles start from $40-50 per night in May and October, rising to $90-100 in August. Benitses is second cheapest at $50-70. Both require a car or bus if you want to see more than your immediate street.

Is Paleokastritsa worth staying at or just a day trip?

Worth 2-3 nights if beaches and views are your priority. The problem is restaurants: there are maybe 4 good ones. Stay here mid-trip, not as your only base. Drive to Corfu Town for a night out and return. Day-trip only if your time is limited.

Do I need a car in Corfu?

Depends on your base. Corfu Town: no, buses cover most destinations. Benitses: no, line 6 bus runs regularly. Paleokastritsa and Sidari: yes. Car rental costs around 35-45 euros per day from local agencies near the airport on Ethnikis Antistaseos Avenue.
