Manuel Antonio

Beach plus rainforest in one walkable strip

Mid-range $140-$320/night

This is the easiest pick if your kids want monkeys and waves on the same morning. The main road runs from Quepos down to the national park entrance, and most family hotels sit along that 7 km stretch near the Marina Pez Vela turnoff. Stay between the El Avion restaurant area and Playitas for the best mix of pools, restaurants, and park access. Calle Espadilla drops right onto Playa Espadilla, which is wide, gentle, and stroller friendly. Skip the cluster right at the park gate. It is loud, hot, and the macaws scream at 5 a.m.

Best for
Families with kids 4 to 12 who want one base for beachwildlifeand easy restaurants
Walk times
  • Playa Espadilla beach: 5 to 15 min
  • Manuel Antonio National Park entrance: 10 to 20 min
  • Quepos town and supermarket 10 min
Skip if: You hate hills. The whole strip is steep and sidewalks vanish in spots.
Local tip: Buy national park tickets online the night before. The walk-up line at 7 a.m. can be 90 minutes in dry season.

La Fortuna and Arenal

Hot springs, volcano views, and zero beach crowds

Mid-range $110-$280/night

La Fortuna town sits at the base of Arenal Volcano, and the family stuff is split between the town center and the road out toward Tabacon. Avenida Central runs past the church park, where kids run around at sunset and ice cream costs $2. Hotels along Route 142 toward El Castillo get the postcard volcano views and access to Mistico Hanging Bridges. Stay in town if you want to walk to dinner. Stay on the volcano road if you want quiet and a pool with a view. Tabacon hot springs are 20 minutes west and worth one afternoon.

Best for
Families with kids 6 and up who like hikeshanging bridgesand warm pools
Walk times
  • La Fortuna central park 5 min
  • La Fortuna Waterfall trailhead 15 min
  • Mistico Hanging Bridges 25 min
Skip if: Your kids meltdown on winding roads. The drive in from San Jose is 3 hours of curves.
Local tip: The free hot river under the Tabacon bridge is the same water as the resort, just bring water shoes and go before 4 p.m.

Tamarindo

Surf town with sand you can actually walk on

Mid-range $130-$300/night

Tamarindo is the Guanacaste pick when you want flat beach, warm Pacific water, and English menus. The main drag is Calle Cardinal running parallel to the beach, with the roundabout at the south end and Playa Tamarindo stretching north. Stay between the roundabout and Hotel Capitan Suizo for the safest swimming and easy walks to surf schools. Witch's Rock Surf Camp and Iguana Surf both run kid lessons from age 5. The estuary at the north end has crocodiles, so keep small kids on the south half. Avoid Playa Langosta after dark, the road has no lights.

Best for
Families with kids 5 and up who want surf lessonssunsetsand walkable dinners
Walk times
  • Playa Tamarindo main beach: 2 to 10 min
  • Surf school meeting points on Calle Cardinal 5 min
  • Playa Langosta tide pools 20 min
Skip if: You want luxury and quiet. This is a backpacker town with a polo shirt on.
Local tip: Book the 7 a.m. surf lesson. Wind picks up by 11 and the afternoon waves get choppy and tiring for beginners.

Monteverde and Santa Elena

Cloud forest base for the wildlife obsessed kid

Mid-range $100-$240/night

Santa Elena is the actual town. Monteverde is the cloud forest reserve 6 km up the mountain. Stay near the Santa Elena triangle on the road toward Cerro Plano if you want walkable cafes and the Selvatura Park shuttle. The Bajo del Tigre trail starts right off Route 606 and is the easiest cloud forest walk for kids under 8. Most family hotels sit between Stella's Bakery and the Monteverde Friends School. The road in is unpaved and rough, plan on 90 minutes from the highway. Pack a fleece. It drops to 60 F at night even in dry season.

Best for
Families with curious kids 7 and up who care about quetzalsslothsand zip lines
Walk times
  • Santa Elena town center: 5 to 15 min
  • Bajo del Tigre family trail 10 min
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve 15 min
Skip if: Your kids need pools and beach. This is hiking, hot chocolate, and early bedtimes.
Local tip: The 100% Aventura zip line has the longest line in Latin America, 1.6 km, but minimum age is 8. Selvatura allows kids from 4 with a guide.

What is the best area in Costa Rica for families with young kids?

Manuel Antonio. The beach is gentle, the national park trail is flat for the first kilometer, and you can walk to restaurants. Kids under 6 do better here than in La Fortuna where everything is a drive.

How many areas should we base in for a 10 day Costa Rica family trip?

Two, maybe three. La Fortuna for 3 nights, Manuel Antonio for 4 nights, and one transit night in San Jose. Adding Monteverde means a rough 3 hour drive on unpaved road, only worth it if your kids are 7 plus and into wildlife.

Is Tamarindo safe for families at night?

The main strip on Calle Cardinal is fine until about 10 p.m. After that the bar crowd takes over near El Pescador. Stick to hotels south of the roundabout and use a taxi for dinners more than 5 minutes away.

When should we avoid Costa Rica with kids?

September and October. Pacific coast rains are heavy, roads to Monteverde and Manuel Antonio can flood, and many small hotels close. December through April is dry and easiest. May and June have afternoon showers but cheaper rates.
