Rim Village

Sleep on the crater edge. Worth every dollar.

Budget $0-$0/night

Rim Village sits at 7,100 feet on the south rim, anchored by the historic Crater Lake Lodge on Rim Drive. You open the door and the lake is right there. The Great Hall overlooks the water from above. Walk west along Rim Drive to Discovery Point in under an hour. The Rim Visitor Center is five minutes on foot. A café and gift shop cover the basics. Rooms book out months ahead, especially July and August. No gas station, no real town, prices that reflect a total monopoly. But sunrise from the lodge porch is unlike anything else in Oregon. Book early or skip this option entirely.

Best for
First-timers who want the full experience and a sunrise view from the water's edge
Walk times
  • Crater Lake rim overlook 2 min
  • Discovery Point via Rim Trail 45 min
  • Rim Visitor Center 5 min
Skip if: You are traveling last-minute without a reservation or watching your budget carefully
Local tip: Request a west-facing room at the Lodge. Those face the lake directly. East-facing rooms overlook the parking lot.

Mazama Village

Inside the park, half the price of the Lodge.

Budget $0-$0/night

Mazama Village sits about 7 miles south of the rim, off Highway 62 near the Annie Spring Entrance Station. The cabins are basic and clean, run by the same concessionaire as the Lodge. You are still inside the park boundary, so no re-entry fees and early rim access before day crowds arrive. The Annie Creek Canyon Trail begins at the campground, a 1.7-mile loop through a sharp volcanic gorge worth doing. The camp store sells basic food and fuel. Weekends fill from late June onward. If the Lodge is sold out, check here next. Campground sites run $35 to $45 for a budget option on park grounds.

Best for
Families and hikers who want park access without Lodge prices
Walk times
  • Annie Creek Canyon Trailhead 5 min
  • Mazama Camp Store 3 min
  • Crater Lake rim by car 15 min
Skip if: You need reliable Wi-Fi or a sit-down restaurant within walking distance
Local tip: Cabins in the D and E loops sit furthest from the main access road. Quieter at night. Ask at check-in.

Union Creek and Prospect

Rogue River cabins, 25 miles from the gate.

Budget $0-$0/night

Union Creek and Prospect line Highway 62 about 23 to 25 miles southwest of the Crater Lake south entrance. Union Creek Resort places you directly on the Upper Rogue River with trailhead access from the property. The Prospect Hotel dates to 1890 and anchors the tiny town of Prospect two miles south. The Rogue River Gorge viewpoint is a 12-minute walk from Union Creek. You can fuel up at the Prospect general store. The drive to the rim takes 35 to 40 minutes each way. Character here beats anything in Klamath Falls. Best choice for couples who want independent lodging without paying rim-side prices.

Best for
Couples and hikers who want affordable character and do not mind a 40-minute drive
Walk times
  • Rogue River Gorge viewpoint 12 min
  • Union Creek waterfall 18 min
  • Upper Rogue River Trail access 5 min
Skip if: You want to catch sunrise on the rim without a predawn departure from your hotel
Local tip: The Prospect Hotel dining room serves locals, not tour groups. Eat dinner there and ask the staff about current road and snow conditions before driving up.

Klamath Falls

Full city amenities, 60 miles south, $80 a night.

Budget $0-$0/night

Klamath Falls is the nearest city to Crater Lake, about 60 miles south on US-97. Chain hotels cluster along South 6th Street and near the downtown waterfront on Main Street. You get grocery stores, gas stations, fast food, and the Favell Museum of Western Art two blocks off the water. The drive to the south park entrance runs about 75 minutes. Worth it if you are staying multiple nights and splitting the savings matters. Not scenic. Not atmospheric. But you can sleep for under $100, fill the tank without a detour, and eat a real dinner without driving seven miles of mountain road to find it.

Best for
Budget travelersmulti-day visitorsand anyone arriving late who needs a reliable bed
Walk times
  • Favell Museum of Western Art 10 min
  • Klamath Basin waterfront at Moore Park 15 min
  • Downtown Main Street dining 8 min
Skip if: You came specifically for the crater and want to avoid an extra 90 minutes of driving per day
Local tip: Book hotels on the north side of downtown, closer to the US-97 and OR-62 junction. It trims 10 minutes off the park drive every morning.

What is the cheapest way to stay near Crater Lake?

Klamath Falls runs $70 to $90 a night for solid chain hotels on South 6th Street. That is roughly half the price of Union Creek and a fifth of Rim Village rates. The tradeoff is 75 minutes each way to the park. For two or three nights, the savings add up fast. If you want to stay closer without paying cabin prices, Mazama Village campground inside the park costs $35 to $45 per site.

How far in advance do I need to book Crater Lake Lodge?

Six months ahead for July and August. The Lodge opens reservations in late winter and the best rooms disappear within days. If you are planning a summer trip now, check for cancellations daily on the Crater Lake Hospitality site. Shoulder season in May and September is more flexible, but the lodge operates a shorter window those months. Do not assume availability until you have a confirmation number.

Is it worth staying inside Crater Lake National Park?

Yes, if the rim is your main reason for being there. You skip the $35 per-vehicle entry fee on multiple days, avoid morning traffic into the park, and get quiet access before day-trippers arrive. Mazama Village gives you the same park access for $50 to $100 less per night than the Lodge. If you are splitting time across southern Oregon with stops in Medford or Ashland, base yourself outside and drive in.

Are there good options near Crater Lake that are not the Lodge?

Union Creek Resort and the Prospect Hotel on Highway 62 are the strongest non-park choices with real character. Both sit under 30 miles from the south entrance. Union Creek puts you on the Rogue River with trailhead access from the property. For a full hotel with amenities and restaurant options, head to Klamath Falls and stay near downtown on Main Street. You give up proximity but gain flexibility and $150 a night in savings.
