Where to Stay in Crested Butte

Four neighborhoods, four very different vibes. Pick the one that matches your trip, not the one with the prettiest photos.

Mt. Crested Butte (the Mountain)

Ski-in, ski-out, and nothing else to think about

Budget $0-$0/night

This is the resort base, three miles uphill from the historic town. You sleep within a snowball's throw of the Silver Queen Express and the Red Lady lift, which matters when you're carrying boots and a four-year-old. Most lodging sits along Gothic Road and Snowmass Road, with the Treasury Center and Lodge at Mountaineer Square as the obvious anchors. Downsides: dining is limited and pricier, and the after-ski scene wraps up early. The free Mountain Express shuttle runs to downtown every 15 minutes until around midnight, so you're not stranded. Book here if lift access trumps everything.

Best for
Skierssnowboardersfamilies with small kidsanyone who hates driving on snow
Walk times
  • Silver Queen lift 2 min
  • Butte 66 base lodge 5 min
  • Avalanche Bar and Grill 8 min
Skip if: You want walkable nightlife or authentic mountain-town character
Local tip: Stay on the uphill side of Gothic Road. The downhill condos look closer on the map but add a steep climb back from the lift in ski boots.

Downtown Crested Butte (Elk Avenue)

Victorian mining town with the best food scene for 100 miles

Budget $0-$0/night

The historic district runs along Elk Avenue between 2nd and 6th Streets. Every restaurant, bar, and gear shop you'll actually want is in this six-block stretch. Secret Stash for pizza, Soupcon for date night, The Eldo for late drinks. Lodging is mostly small inns, B and Bs, and vacation rentals tucked on Sopris, Maroon, and Whiterock Avenues. You're three miles from the lifts, but the free shuttle runs every 15 minutes from the Four-Way Stop. Streets are walkable and lit at night. Book here if you care more about evenings than first chair.

Crested Butte South (CB South)

Quiet residential pocket with cheaper rentals and easy parking

Budget $0-$0/night

Seven miles south of downtown on Highway 135, CB South is a planned residential community along Cement Creek Road and Red Mountain Ranch. It's almost entirely vacation rentals and second homes, no hotels worth booking. You get more square footage for your money and a yard for the dog, but you'll drive everywhere. The shuttle does run here, just less often (roughly every 30 to 45 minutes in winter). Grocery run? Drive to Clark's Market in town. Good Wi-Fi, quiet streets, and clear night skies. Book here if you're traveling with a group of six or more and want a real house.

Best for
Familiesgroup tripsdog ownerslonger stays of 5-plus nights
Walk times
  • Camp 4 Coffee CB South 10 min
  • Driving only to Elk Avenue 12 min
  • the Slate River trailhead 5 min
Skip if: You don't want to rent a car or drive on icy roads at night
Local tip: Avoid rentals on Cement Creek Road past mile 2. The unpaved sections turn into a mess in mud season (April and May).

Riverland / South of Town

Budget base camp for summer trips

Budget $0-$0/night

Riverland is a small commercial and lodging strip along Highway 135 just south of the Four-Way Stop, sitting roughly between downtown and CB South. Think simple motels, budget inns, and a couple of newer condo buildings near the Slate River. You're a 10-minute walk to Elk Avenue along a paved path, and the shuttle stops at the Four-Way. This is where you stay when you've spent your budget on lift tickets or a guided fly-fishing day on the East River. Not scenic, mostly parking lots and the highway, but it works.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo mountain bikersanyone who just needs a bed
Walk times
  • Elk Avenue 10 min
  • Camp 4 Coffee on Elk 12 min
  • the Slate River bike path 2 min
Skip if: You want charm, walkable dining, or a view from the window
Local tip: The Slate River bike path that runs behind Riverland connects you to downtown without ever touching the highway. Use it.

Is it better to stay at the mountain or in town?

At the mountain if you're here primarily to ski and have kids or gear to wrangle. In town if you care about dinner, drinks, and the historic district feel. The free shuttle makes either choice workable, but you'll appreciate ski-in access on a 10-degree morning.

Do I need a rental car in Crested Butte?

Not if you're staying on Mt. Crested Butte or downtown. The Mountain Express shuttle is free and runs every 15 minutes until around midnight. You'll want a car for CB South, Riverland, or any day trips to Kebler Pass, Gothic, or Lake Irwin.

When is Crested Butte cheapest?

April 5 through May 25 is mud season, when the mountain closes and town is half-empty. Lodging drops 40 to 60 percent. October to mid-November is similar. Just know many restaurants close for 2 to 4 weeks during these windows.

How far is Crested Butte from the airport?

Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is 30 miles south, about 35 minutes by car. Alpine Express runs a shared shuttle for around $58 round trip. Denver International is 230 miles and a 4.5-hour drive, snow-dependent in winter.
