Paphos (Kato Paphos)

The classic first visit

Mid-range $90-$180/night

Kato Paphos is the harbour district where most travellers land first, and for good reason. You can walk from the medieval castle along the seafront promenade to the Tombs of the Kings in about 25 minutes, passing the UNESCO mosaics at Paphos Archaeological Park on the way. Poseidonos Avenue is the main strip, lined with tavernas and small hotels. Stay near Apostolou Pavlou Avenue if you want shops and bars within stumbling distance. Skip the eastern end past the Annabelle hotel, it gets package-tour heavy. Beaches here are rocky in places, so book a hotel with a pool.

Best for
First-time visitors who want historywalkable streetsand a quiet base
Walk times
  • Paphos Castle to Tombs of the Kings 25 min
  • Kato Paphos to Coral Bay beach: taxi 15 min
  • Harbour to Archaeological Park entrance 8 min
Skip if: You want sandy beaches at your doorstep or buzzing nightlife
Local tip: Eat at the tavernas on the inland side of Apostolou Pavlou, not the harbour ones. Same food, half the price, locals actually go there.

Limassol Marina

The grown-up coastal city

Mid-range $140-$280/night

Limassol is Cyprus's second city and feels like it. The marina district, finished in 2014, sits next to the restored Old Port and Medieval Castle. From the marina you can walk along the 14-kilometre seafront promenade past Molos Park to the Old Town in about 20 minutes. Saint Andrew Street has the best restaurants, while Anexartisias Street covers shopping. The beaches in town are mediocre, but Lady's Mile sits 10 minutes south by taxi. Avoid Germasogeia tourist strip unless you specifically want British pubs and Russian-language menus.

Best for
Couples and foodies who want walkable dining and a real city feel
Walk times
  • Marina to Limassol Castle 4 min
  • Marina to Old Town centre 20 min
  • Marina to Lady's Mile beach: taxi 10 min
Skip if: You're on a tight budget or want quiet, family-friendly evenings
Local tip: Friday night, locals queue at To Mikro Pou on Eleftherias Street for souvlaki. Cash only, no menu, just point at what others are eating.

Ayia Napa

The beach-club summer

Mid-range $100-$220/night

Ayia Napa earns its reputation. From late May to early September, Nissi Avenue turns into one long bar crawl, with Pernera and Protaras nearby for families who want the same beaches without the chaos. Nissi Beach itself is the best stretch, white sand and shallow water, a 15-minute walk from the central Square. Makronissos Beach sits 5 minutes further west and stays calmer. Stay near the Square if you want nightlife, near Grecian Bay if you want quiet. Off-season (November to March) most places shut, the town empties, and you'll wonder why you came.

Best for
Groupsbeach loversanyone under 35 in July or August
Walk times
  • Square to Nissi Beach 15 min
  • Square to Ayia Napa Monastery 2 min
  • Grecian Bay hotel zone to Square 12 min
Skip if: You want culture, you're visiting in winter, or you hate crowds
Local tip: Book Cape Greco sea caves first thing in the morning before the boat tours arrive. Park at Konnos Beach, walk the coastal path 20 minutes.

Nicosia (Old Town)

The capital nobody books

Mid-range $80-$150/night

Nicosia is the only divided capital in Europe, and the Old Town inside the Venetian walls is genuinely interesting. Ledra Street is the main pedestrian artery, ending at the crossing point into northern Cyprus, which you can walk through with a passport in 10 minutes. Laiki Geitonia is the restored quarter with traditional houses and tavernas. Faneromeni Square has the indie bars locals actually use. There's no beach, no airport nearby (Larnaca is 45 minutes), and most tourists skip it entirely. That's exactly why it's worth a night or two.

Best for
History and culture travellers who want a non-resort experience
Walk times
  • Ledra Street to Faneromeni Square 5 min
  • Old Town to Cyprus Museum 10 min
  • Eleftheria Square to north crossing 8 min
Skip if: You want beaches, pools, or a typical Mediterranean holiday

What is the best area to stay in Cyprus for first-timers?

Kato Paphos. It's walkable, has the most history packed into one spot (UNESCO mosaics, the Tombs of the Kings, the medieval castle), and prices stay reasonable at $90 to $180 per night. You can do day trips to Limassol (50 minutes) and Troodos (75 minutes) without changing hotels.

Where should I stay in Cyprus for nightlife?

Ayia Napa from June to August, Limassol Marina the rest of the year. Ayia Napa shuts down completely from November to March, so don't book it in winter expecting bars to be open. Limassol's Saint Andrew Street and the marina stay lively year-round.

Is Nicosia worth staying in?

For one or two nights, yes, especially if you want to see the divided city and cross into the north. It's not a beach base, the nearest swim is 45 minutes away in Larnaca. Stay inside the Venetian walls near Ledra Street, not the modern outskirts.

How much does a hotel in Cyprus cost?

Budget rooms run $80 to $100 per night in Nicosia and shoulder-season Paphos. Mid-range hotels in Limassol Marina or Ayia Napa sit at $140 to $220. Luxury seafront hotels along Limassol's coast or in Protaras hit $250 to $400 in July and August.
