01

Downtown / Penn Quarter

Best location in the city, full stop

Luxury $180-$350/night

Penn Quarter puts you between the National Mall and the city's main business core. 7th Street NW is the restaurant spine, lined with spots like Jaleo and RPM Italian. Capital One Arena anchors the north end. Walk south and you hit the Mall in under 10 minutes. Pennsylvania Avenue connects the White House to the Capitol through your front door. Hotels here lean large and business-oriented, but the location is unbeatable for first visits. Parking is a nightmare and prices spike on weekends. Book Tuesday through Thursday for the best rates.

Georgetown

Beautiful, expensive, and no Metro

Luxury $220-$480/night

Georgetown is DC's most photographed neighborhood. M Street NW and Wisconsin Avenue NW form the main cross, packed with restaurants and shops. Walk down to the C&O Canal towpath for a genuine local experience. Georgetown Waterfront Park on K Street NW is where people actually hang out on warm evenings. Hotels here are smaller and more expensive. The big catch is zero Metro access. You take the Circulator bus or walk 25 minutes to Foggy Bottom station. Rental cars make sense here. If you are splurging on one good hotel for the whole trip, Georgetown is the right call.

Best for
Couplesluxury travelerspeople who have already done the monuments
Walk times
  • Georgetown Waterfront Park 5 min
  • Foggy Bottom Metro Station 25 min
  • National Mall 35 min
Skip if: You need Metro access, are traveling with young kids, or on a tight budget
Local tip: The DC Circulator bus runs from Georgetown to Union Station for $1. Faster than Uber during rush hour on most days.

Dupont Circle

The neighborhood DC locals actually live in

Mid-range $150-$280/night

Dupont Circle is where residents eat, drink, and socialize. Connecticut Avenue NW from the circle north toward Woodley Park is packed with cafes and independent restaurants. 18th Street NW runs through Adams Morgan just north, which gets loud on weekends. P Street NW is calmer and lined with brownstones. The Phillips Collection, one of DC's best small museums, sits at Q Street NW and 21st. Hotels are mid-size and better value than Georgetown. The Red Line Metro stop is right at the circle. A solid base for a second or third DC trip.

Capitol Hill

Residential, walkable to the Capitol, underrated

Mid-range $130-$250/night

Capitol Hill is where congressional staffers live and hotels cost notably less than downtown. Pennsylvania Avenue SE is the main commercial strip. Eastern Market on 7th Street SE has operated since 1873 and fills on Saturday mornings with produce, flowers, and crafts. North Carolina Avenue SE leads to Lincoln Park, a good morning run route. The Capitol building is a 10-minute walk. Union Station is 12 minutes on foot and connects to Metro Red, Orange, Blue, and Silver lines. The neighborhood quiets down at night. Not for nightlife, but strong value for travelers who want substance.

Best for
Budget-conscious travelershistory buffsvisitors attending government or political events
Walk times
  • US Capitol Building 10 min
  • Eastern Market 5 min
  • Union Station and Metro Hub 12 min
Skip if: You want nightlife, trendy restaurants, or walkable luxury retail
Local tip: The Library of Congress is free and one block from the Capitol. Most tourists skip it. Do not skip it.

What is the best area to stay in DC for first-time visitors?

Penn Quarter or Downtown. You are 8 minutes from the Smithsonian and 12 minutes from the White House on foot. Gallery Place Metro covers everything else. Rates run $180 to $350 per night. Book Tuesday to Thursday to avoid weekend conference pricing that hits every hotel in this zone.

Is Georgetown worth staying in if there is no Metro?

Yes, if you are not moving around a lot. The DC Circulator bus runs to Union Station for $1 and covers most tourist needs. Rideshare from Georgetown to the Mall runs $10 to $15. If you plan to hit 4 or 5 museums in a day, the lack of Metro access will slow you down noticeably.

Which DC neighborhood has the cheapest hotels?

Capitol Hill consistently runs $30 to $50 cheaper per night than Downtown. You are still 10 minutes from the Capitol and 15 from the Mall. Eastern Market on 7th Street SE is a genuinely good Saturday morning stop. The neighborhood is quiet at night, which many travelers actually prefer.

Where should I stay in DC for restaurants and nightlife?

Dupont Circle, specifically around 18th Street NW into Adams Morgan. You have Ethiopian restaurants on 18th Street, cocktail bars on Columbia Road NW, and the Dupont Circle farmers market Sundays at 20th and Q Streets NW. Red Line Metro is 3 minutes from most hotels in this area.
