LoDo (Lower Downtown)

Walkable nightlife, ballpark, and Union Station

Luxury $220-$380/night

LoDo is the red-brick warehouse district between Union Station and Coors Field. You'll be walking to Rockies games on Blake Street, grabbing coffee at Little Owl on Wynkoop, and catching the free 16th Street Mall shuttle when your feet give out. The Dairy Block alley has hidden bars and the Milk Market food hall. Larimer Square handles the upscale dinner crowd. It gets loud on weekends near Market Street, so light sleepers should ask for a room facing Wynkoop or above the 6th floor. Union Station's A Line train reaches the airport in 37 minutes for $10.50.

Best for
First-time visitorsbaseball fansanyone who wants to skip the rental car
Walk times
  • Coors Field 8 min
  • 16th Street Mall 3 min

Skip if: You hate weekend bar noise or want quiet mornings
Local tip: The A Line train from Union Station beats a $50 Uber to DIA. Buy your ticket at the kiosk before boarding, conductors check on the platform.

RiNo (River North Art District)

Murals, breweries, and the city's creative core

Mid-range $160-$280/night

RiNo sits just northeast of downtown along Larimer and Walnut Streets. The whole neighborhood is a working mural gallery, with new walls painted every September during Crush Walls. Breweries like Ratio Beerworks and Our Mutual Friend anchor the scene, and Denver Central Market on Larimer covers breakfast through late dinner. The Source hotel and market is the polished version of the area. Mister Oso for tacos, Hop Alley for Chinese, Safta for Israeli. It's a 20-minute walk to Union Station or one stop on the 38th and Blake light rail. Industrial feel, less polished than LoDo, more interesting.

Local tip: Skip the rideshare to dinner and walk Larimer between 25th and 31st. New murals appear monthly and the bars on that stretch are the best in Denver.

Cherry Creek

Upscale shopping, leafy streets, calmer pace

Luxury $250-$450/night

Cherry Creek is six miles southeast of downtown, built around the Cherry Creek Shopping Center and the smaller, prettier Cherry Creek North district along 2nd and 3rd Avenue. Tree-lined streets, indie boutiques, Tattered Cover bookstore, and restaurants like Matsuhisa and Hillstone. The Cherry Creek Trail runs right through, giving you a paved 8-mile bike ride straight into downtown along the water. It's the quietest of the four areas, with families and older travelers, and rooms run higher because of it. You'll need a 15-minute Uber or the 0L bus to reach LoDo for nightlife.

Best for
Couplesbusiness travelersanyone who values quiet over walkability to downtown
Walk times
  • Cherry Creek Shopping Center 5 min
  • Cherry Creek North dining 8 min
  • Cherry Creek Trail access 3 min
Skip if: You want to walk to bars at midnight or stick to a budget
Local tip: Rent a bike from the hotel and ride the Cherry Creek Trail to Confluence Park. It's flat, paved, and dumps you at the South Platte where you can watch kayakers in the summer.

Capitol Hill

Budget-friendly, walkable to museums and Cheesman Park

Mid-range $110-$180/night

Capitol Hill stretches east from the State Capitol to Cheesman Park, packed with Victorian mansions converted to apartments and a young, residential vibe. Colfax Avenue forms the northern edge with dive bars, taquerias, and the Fillmore Auditorium. The Denver Art Museum, History Colorado, and the Botanic Gardens are all walkable. Voodoo Doughnut on Colfax handles late-night sugar runs. It's the cheapest of the four areas because it's residential, not touristed, but you're a 25-minute walk or quick bus ride to LoDo. Some blocks east of Pearl Street feel rougher after dark, stick west of Logan Street and you're fine.

Walk times
  • Colorado State Capitol 8 min
  • Denver Botanic Gardens 12 min
  • 16th Street Mall 22 min
Skip if: You want hotel restaurants and concierge service
Local tip: Pete's Kitchen on Colfax has been open 24 hours since 1942. Order the green chile breakfast burrito after a night out, locals have been doing this for 80 years.

Which Denver neighborhood is best for first-time visitors?

LoDo. You'll walk to Coors Field, Union Station, the 16th Street Mall, and most of the breweries without ever needing a car. Rooms run $220 to $380 nightly, and the A Line train from Union Station reaches the airport in 37 minutes for $10.50.

Is Capitol Hill safe to stay in?

West of Logan Street is fine, including the blocks around Cheesman Park and the Botanic Gardens. East of Pearl Street and parts of East Colfax can feel rougher after dark. Daytime is no issue anywhere, just use normal city awareness on Colfax at night.

Do I need a car in Denver?

Not if you stay in LoDo, RiNo, or Capitol Hill. The 16th Street shuttle is free, the A Line covers the airport run, and rideshares between neighborhoods cost $10 to $15. Cherry Creek is the one area where a car helps, since you're 6 miles from downtown.

When are Denver hotel prices lowest?

January and February, outside of ski-getaway weekends, drop rates 30 to 40 percent below summer. April and early May before Memorial Day are also soft. Avoid the second weekend of January when the National Western Stock Show fills every downtown room.
