Where to Stay in Destin, Florida

Four very different sides of Destin. Pick the one that matches your trip, not the one with the prettiest brochure.

Holiday Isle

Classic Destin beach, walk everywhere

Luxury $220-$480/night

Holiday Isle sits on the narrow strip between Old 98 and the Gulf, west of Destin Bridge. This is where the sand gets that flour-soft texture people drive twelve hours for. Most rentals line Gulf Shore Drive, with low-rise condos like Jetty East and Pelican Beach Resort facing the East Pass. You can walk to June's Dunes for breakfast, the Destin Jetties for snorkeling, and Boshamps for sunset oysters. Traffic on US-98 gets ugly between 4pm and 7pm in summer, so pick a place where you can park the car and stay parked. The vibe is families and couples, not spring breakers.

Best for
First timers who want true sugar sand and short walks to the water without a car
Walk times
  • Destin Jetties and East Pass 5 min
  • Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House 10 min
  • HarborWalk Village across the bridge 15 min
Skip if: You want nightlife past 11pm or a big resort pool scene
Local tip: Park at the Norriego Point lot before 9am. After that it fills with locals walking dogs and you will circle for twenty minutes.

HarborWalk Village

Boats, bars, and charter docks

Luxury $240-$520/night

HarborWalk Village wraps around Destin Harbor on the north side of the bridge, anchored by Emerald Grande and the charter fleet. You step out of your room and you are at the docks where mahi and amberjack come off the boats around 4pm. Restaurants like Harry T's, AJ's, and Brotula's are all walkable, and the boardwalk runs straight to the parasail and dolphin tour booths. Rooms with harbor views beat Gulf views here because the harbor is the show. The trade off is no direct beach. You shuttle or drive ten minutes to Henderson Beach State Park or take the free Crab Trap water taxi across to Norriego Point.

Best for
Anglerscouples who want walkable dinner and drinksand anyone booking a charter
Walk times
  • charter boat docks and HarborWalk shops 2 min
  • Boshamps via the harbor path 8 min
  • Destin History and Fishing Museum 12 min
Skip if: You want to wake up and step onto the beach in flip flops
Local tip: Book your fishing charter the afternoon you arrive by walking the docks. Captains drop prices on unfilled half day trips around 5pm.

Miramar Beach

Wider beaches, less traffic, outlet shopping

Luxury $200-$460/night

Miramar Beach starts where Destin ends, running east along Scenic Gulf Drive toward Sandestin. The beach is noticeably wider here and the crowds thin out past Pompano Joe's. Hilton Sandestin and the Henderson sit on this stretch, along with hundreds of beachfront condos like Majestic Sun and Ariel Dunes. Silver Sands Premium Outlets is right off US-98 with Polo, Coach, and Nike at real outlet prices. Pompano Joe's, Whale's Tail, and the Back Porch are the beach bars worth the sand in your shoes. You will need a car for downtown Destin, but you also skip the worst of the Destin Bridge traffic.

Best for
Families who want space on the sand and a quieter base with shopping nearby
Walk times
  • Pompano Joe's beach bar 3 min
  • Silver Sands outlets from north side condos 10 min
  • walk along Scenic Gulf Drive to Whale's Tail 20 min
Skip if: You want to walk to fishing charters or the harbor scene
Local tip: The public beach access at Miramar Beach Regional Access has free parking before 8am. After that try the Henderson Beach State Park entrance two miles east, $6 per car.

Crab Island and Marler Bridge Area

Value stays with quick water access

Mid-range $140-$280/night

The stretch along US-98 just north of Destin Bridge, sometimes called the Marler Bridge area, gives you the cheapest rooms within five minutes of the harbor and Crab Island. Pontoon rental shops like Boogie's and Crab Island Cantina launch from here, and you can walk to La Paz for tacos or Lulu's Destin for the kid friendly version of Margaritaville. Hampton Inn Destin and Holiday Inn Express on US-98 run twenty to thirty percent below comparable Holiday Isle condos. You give up the walk to beach factor, but Henderson Beach State Park is six minutes by car. This is the smart pick if you are renting a boat or doing day trips to 30A.

Best for
Budget travelersboat rentersand anyone using Destin as a base for 30A day trips
Walk times
  • Boogie's pontoon rentals 5 min
  • Lulu's Destin 8 min
  • Destin Commons shops and AMC theater 10 min
Skip if: You came specifically to walk barefoot from your room to the Gulf
Local tip: Reserve your Crab Island pontoon two days out, not the morning of. Boogie's and 850 Boat Rentals sell out by 9am in July and the walk up rate is double.

What is the best area to stay in Destin for first timers?

Holiday Isle. You get the famous sugar sand, short walks to the East Pass and Jetties, and you can leave the car parked. Aim for Gulf Shore Drive between Norriego Point and Crystal Beach. Expect to pay $220 to $400 in shoulder season and up to $480 in June and July.

Where should I stay in Destin without a car?

Holiday Isle or HarborWalk Village. Holiday Isle works if you want beach plus walkable dinner at Boshamps or June's Dunes. HarborWalk Village works if you are doing charters and harbor restaurants. Miramar Beach and the Crab Island area both require driving to most things.

Is Miramar Beach better than Destin proper?

It depends on what you want. Miramar Beach has wider beaches, less Destin Bridge traffic, and Silver Sands outlets ten minutes away. Destin proper, meaning Holiday Isle and HarborWalk, has the harbor scene, charter fleet, and walkable nightlife. Families with young kids tend to prefer Miramar. Couples and groups doing fishing prefer Destin proper.

Where do you stay in Destin to be near Crab Island?

The US-98 corridor just north of Destin Bridge, between Stahlman Avenue and Airport Road. Boogie's, 850 Boat Rentals, and Crab Island Cantina all launch from here. Hampton Inn Destin and Holiday Inn Express on US-98 are the best value, both within a five minute walk to pontoon launches.
