Roseau

The capital base for first-timers

Mid-range $85-$220/night

Roseau sits on the southwest coast and works best if you're arriving by ferry from Guadeloupe or Martinique. Stay near Bay Front or along Old Street and you can walk to the Saturday market, the Botanic Gardens, and dozens of restaurants on King George V Street. The Roseau Cathedral and Dominica Museum are five minutes apart on foot. From here, Trafalgar Falls is a 20 minute drive and Boiling Lake trailhead is 35 minutes. Skip the area south of the bus terminal at night. Stick to Cork Street and Kennedy Avenue for safer walks back to your guesthouse.

Portsmouth

The quiet north for Cabrits and Indian River

Mid-range $95-$250/night

Portsmouth is the second largest town and the gateway to Cabrits National Park and the Indian River boat tours that featured in Pirates of the Caribbean. Stay along Bay Street or near Purple Turtle Beach and you'll wake up to fishermen pulling in nets. The town itself is sleepy after 8pm, with maybe three restaurants open. Ross University students fill the bars on Bay Street weekends. From Portsmouth you reach Syndicate Falls in 25 minutes and the Waitukubuli Trail northern segments in under 30. Skip Portsmouth if you need nightlife or shopping. The closest proper supermarket is back in Roseau, 90 minutes south.

  • Bay Street to Indian River dock 10 min
  • Cabrits entrance to nearest hotel 20 min

Local tip: Book Indian River with Cobra Tours at the dock, not through your hotel. You save about 40 percent and the guides are the same boat captains.

Calibishie

Red Rocks and the best beaches on the island

Mid-range $110-$300/night

Calibishie on the northeast coast has the only stretch of proper beach hotels on Dominica. Hampstead Beach, Pointe Baptiste, and the Red Rocks formation are all within a 10 minute drive. The village itself is two streets and a few rum shops, but the coastline is dramatic with reef-protected swimming bays. Stay along Main Road or up the hill at Pointe Baptiste Estate for ocean views. From here you reach Calibishie Lodges in 5 minutes and Woodford Hill Bay in 15. Skip if you want to do Boiling Lake or Soufriere day trips. Both are over 90 minutes of winding road from here.

Local tip: Stop at Bamboo Restaurant on Main Road for fresh fish creole. They cook only what came in that morning, so the menu changes daily.

Soufriere

Hot springs and the south coast wellness base

Mid-range $120-$400/night

Soufriere village on the southwest coast sits next to Champagne Reef, where geothermal vents bubble underwater. The Soufriere Sulphur Springs and Tia's Bamboo Cottages hot pools are a 5 minute drive uphill. Stay along the bay road or at Jungle Bay further south at Pointe Mulatre for full wellness resort treatment. From Soufriere you reach Scotts Head peninsula in 8 minutes and the Roseau ferry in 30. The village has three small restaurants and one rum shop, all closing by 9pm. Skip if you want walkability or shopping. The whole area shuts down outside of meal hours.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Dominica?

Roseau works best for first-timers. You're 5 minutes from the ferry, walking distance to restaurants on King George V Street, and within a 30 minute drive of Trafalgar Falls and the Boiling Lake trailhead. Hotels start around 85 USD a night.

Is Dominica safe at night?

Roseau is safe in the central streets like Cork Street and Kennedy Avenue, but avoid the area south of the bus terminal after dark. Portsmouth, Calibishie, and Soufriere are very quiet and safe, though most villages shut down by 9pm so plan dinner before 8.

Which area has the best beaches?

Calibishie on the northeast coast. Hampstead Beach, Pointe Baptiste, and Number 1 Beach are all within 15 minutes of the village. Most of Dominica's coast is volcanic black sand or rocky, so Calibishie's reef-protected golden bays are the exception.

Can I base myself in one area and see the whole island?

Roseau is the only realistic single base. The island is 47km long but the roads are slow and winding. From Calibishie or Portsmouth in the north, reaching Soufriere or Boiling Lake takes 90 to 120 minutes each way. Most travelers split between two areas.
