Where to Stay Guide

Where to Stay in Punta Cana

Four very different strips of sand. Pick wrong and you'll spend $40 each way in taxis.

Bavaro Beach

The main strip everyone pictures

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Bavaro is the postcard. The beach runs about 5 km from El Cortecito north toward Arena Gorda, lined with all-inclusives and beach bars. Stay near Plaza Bavaro or Los Corales if you want to walk to dinner instead of catching a resort shuttle. Avenida Alemania is the back road most resorts sit on. Coco Bongo and Imagine Punta Cana are within taxi range. The water gets choppier here than further south, but the sand is wide and the snorkel boats leave from Cortecito pier. Prices climb sharply for beachfront. One block back you save 30 percent.

Best for
First trip to Punta Canacouples who want bars and restaurants outside the resort
Walk times
  • El Cortecito to Los Corales 15 min
  • Plaza Bavaro to beach 5 min
  • Coco Bongo to most Bavaro hotels 10 min
Skip if: You want quiet beaches or no vendors approaching you
Local tip: Walk south on the beach past Cortecito for cheaper local seafood at Capitan Cook instead of resort buffets.

Cap Cana

Gated luxury enclave

Luxury $350-$900/night

Cap Cana sits south of the airport, behind a guard gate. It is a master-planned development with Punta Espada golf course, Juanillo Beach, and the Marina Cap Cana yacht harbor. Boulevard Zona Hoteles is the main spine. Eden Roc, Sanctuary, and Hyatt Ziva sit on the calmer south-facing beaches. Juanillo is the public beach inside the gates and stays cleaner than Bavaro. You will not walk anywhere outside your resort. Taxis to Bavaro restaurants run $30 to $40 each way. The plus side is the water is glassy, the beaches are nearly empty, and there are zero vendors. Worth it if you want a real break.

Best for
Honeymoonsgolfersanyone wanting empty beach and no hassle
Walk times
  • Resort to Juanillo Beach: 5 10 min
  • Marina Cap Cana to Api Beach Club 8 min
Skip if: You want to leave the resort to explore on foot
Local tip: Book a day pass to Juanillo if your resort is elsewhere. The beach is the best in Punta Cana and the gate fee is around $20.

Uvero Alto

Far north, deliberately quiet

Luxury $180-$420/night

Uvero Alto is 40 minutes north of the airport down a long road through sugarcane. Resorts here are spread out with miles of beach between them. Excellence, Zoetry, and Dreams Macao sit on this stretch. The sand is darker and the surf stronger than Bavaro. There is nothing within walking distance of any resort. No bars, no shops, no nightlife. That is the point. Families with small kids and people who actually want to read a book pick this strip. Add 25 minutes and $35 each way to any excursion that leaves from Bavaro.

Best for
Familiesrepeat visitorspeople who do not plan to leave the resort
Walk times
  • Beach to lobby: 2 5 min
  • Macao Beach surf spot 15 min
Skip if: You want walkable dining or nightlife
Local tip: If you are paying for excursions, price them through your concierge against Get Your Guide pickup. Resort tour desks mark up 50 percent.

Punta Cana Village

Where staff and locals actually live

Mid-range $80-$160/night

Punta Cana Village sits across from the airport and is mostly residential. It is the only area in Punta Cana where you can walk to a regular grocery store, eat at a non-resort restaurant, and see actual Dominican daily life. Galerias Punta Cana mall is here, plus Jellyfish Beach Restaurant nearby. Hotels are smaller and cheaper. The trade-off is no real beach within walking distance. You take a 10 minute taxi to Cabeza de Toro or 20 minutes to Bavaro. Rental car makes more sense here than anywhere else in Punta Cana.

Best for
Budget travelerslonger stayspeople renting a car
Walk times
  • Galerias mall to most guesthouses 10 min
  • Village to nearest beach (Cabeza de Toro) 10 min
  • Airport to Village 5 min
Skip if: You want beachfront or all-inclusive convenience
Local tip: Eat at La Yola or local spots on Boulevard 1 de Noviembre. Dinner runs $15 instead of $60 at the resorts.

What is the best area in Punta Cana for first-timers?

Bavaro Beach. It has the widest range of resorts, the most restaurants outside the hotels, and the postcard beach. Stay near El Cortecito or Los Corales so you can walk to bars and dinner.

Is Cap Cana worth the extra money?

Yes if you want empty beach and zero vendors. Juanillo Beach is the cleanest sand in Punta Cana and the gated entry keeps day-trippers out. No, if you plan to leave the resort often. Taxis to Bavaro run $30-40 each way.

Where should families with kids stay?

Uvero Alto for calm and space, or Bavaro for variety. Skip Cap Cana unless your resort has dedicated kids facilities. The luxury enclaves are quieter than most families want.

How far is the airport from each area?

Punta Cana Village is 5 minutes. Bavaro is 20-25 minutes. Cap Cana is 10-15 minutes south. Uvero Alto is 40-50 minutes north. Factor this into late flights.
