Sarlat-la-Canéda

Medieval showpiece, worth every euro

Mid-range $110-$260/night

Sarlat is the reason most people visit Dordogne. The old town around Rue des Consuls and Place de la Liberté is genuinely stunning, especially at dusk when the tour groups thin out. Base yourself here and you walk everywhere worth seeing. The Saturday market on Place de la Liberté is France's best open-air food market. Hotels on Rue de la République and around Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos command premiums but justify them. The central lane splits old Sarlat cleanly in two. Book two months ahead for July and August or accept whatever is left at whatever price they want.

Best for
First-timerscouplesfoodiesanyone visiting in May or September
Walk times
  • Place de la Liberté market 5 min
  • Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos 7 min
  • Château de Beynac car park (drive 20 min) 3 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or visiting in peak July and August without booking months ahead
Local tip: Rue des Consuls after 7pm is nearly deserted. That is when the town actually looks like it did in the 14th century.

Périgueux

Real city life, no tourist markup

Budget $75-$180/night

Périgueux is where Dordogne locals actually live. The old town clusters around Cathédrale Saint-Front, its Byzantine domes visible from anywhere in the city. Place du Coderc hosts a daily morning market that has not been staged for tourists. Rue Taillefer and Rue Limogeanne are the real shopping streets. Hotels here run 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Sarlat for equivalent quality. The train station connects to Bordeaux in 90 minutes. If you are spending more than four days in Dordogne or arriving by rail, Périgueux as a base makes more financial sense than Sarlat.

Walk times
  • Cathédrale Saint-Front 10 min
  • Place du Coderc morning market 7 min
  • Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum 12 min
Skip if: You are only here 2 to 3 days and want to maximize château and cave time
Local tip: The Wednesday and Saturday market on Place du Coderc draws farmers from 40km around. Arrive by 8am for the best foie gras producers.

Bergerac

Wine country with a working port

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Bergerac sits on the Dordogne River's western end, where the terrain flattens into vineyard country. The old quarter around Place Pelissière and Rue de l'Ancien Pont is compact and walkable, but the real draw is access to Pécharmant, Monbazillac, and Saussignac appellations within 15 minutes by car. Wine estate tastings here cost 5 to 10 euros versus 20 euros in Bordeaux. The Maison des Vins on the quay maps all 13 local appellations. Hotels are genuinely affordable and almost always include free parking. It is quieter than Sarlat but positioned well for day trips west toward Bordeaux or east toward the Vézère valley.

Best for
Wine enthusiastscouplesslow travelersthose combining Dordogne with Bordeaux
Walk times
  • Place Pelissière 6 min
  • Maison des Vins du Bergeracois 8 min
  • Château de Monbazillac car park (drive 8 min) 3 min
Skip if: Prehistoric caves and medieval châteaux are your primary goal
Local tip: Monbazillac sweet wine is half the price of Sauternes and most critics cannot reliably distinguish them in blind tastings.

Les Eyzies and Vézère Valley

Prehistoric cave country, quiet after 5pm

Mid-range $80-$175/night

Les Eyzies sits at the confluence of the Vézère and Beune rivers and bills itself the world capital of prehistory, which is accurate. The Musée National de Préhistoire and Grotte de Font-de-Gaume are both walkable from the village center. The main road, Route de Périgueux, runs through the village in under two minutes. Accommodation skews smaller: chambres d'hôtes, two-star hotels, a few riverside three-stars. Prices drop 40 percent versus Sarlat. Book Font-de-Gaume tickets 90 days in advance. Only 78 visitors per day are allowed. Evenings are genuinely quiet and the valley light at golden hour is extraordinary.

Best for
Prehistory enthusiastshikersfamilies with kidsoff-season visitors
Walk times
  • Musée National de Préhistoire 6 min
  • Grotte de Font-de-Gaume entrance 12 min
  • Abri du Cap Blanc car park (drive 10 min) 3 min
Skip if: You need restaurant variety after 8pm or prefer urban amenities
Local tip: Font-de-Gaume is one of the last original polychrome painted caves open to the public in France. Tickets open 90 days ahead. Set a calendar reminder now.

What is the best area to stay in Dordogne for first-timers?

Sarlat-la-Canéda. The medieval center puts you 5 minutes walk from the Saturday market, the best restaurants, and easy day-trip access to Beynac and Château des Milandes. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for summer, or visit in May or October when prices drop 30 percent and the town is half as crowded.

Is it worth staying in Périgueux instead of Sarlat?

Yes, if you are spending 4 or more days and want to save money. Hotels in Périgueux run 75 to 130 dollars versus 130 to 200 dollars in Sarlat for equivalent rooms. The city is larger, more local, and has a direct train to Bordeaux in 90 minutes. The tradeoff: you need a car to reach the best châteaux and cave sites, which are 45 to 60 minutes east.

Do you need a car to get around Dordogne?

Almost certainly yes. Trains connect Périgueux and Bergerac to Bordeaux, but the Vézère Valley, Sarlat, and most château sites have no reliable public transport. Car rental from Périgueux or Bergerac train stations runs 35 to 55 euros per day. Without a car, you are limited to sites walkable from Sarlat's old town plus any organized tours you book on arrival.

When is the best time to visit Dordogne and how does it affect hotel prices?

May and September hit the sweet spot: warm enough for river swimming, dry enough for cave visits, and hotels run 25 to 40 percent cheaper than peak July and August. July in Sarlat means the old town fills by 10am and parking is a daily problem. October through April prices drop further but smaller hotels and restaurants close. Vézère Valley cave tickets require advance booking year-round regardless of season.
