Hanga Roa Centro

The only town, the only option, and actually quite good

Mid-range $80-$220/night

Hanga Roa is the sole settlement on Easter Island, and the Centro runs along Avenida Atamu Tekena, the main commercial strip parallel to the coast. Tour operators, restaurants, the CONAF national park office, bike rentals, and the local artisan market cluster within three blocks. Policarpo Toro crosses Atamu Tekena at the heart of town. Hotels range from family guesthouses to solid mid-range lodges. No rental car needed from here. Everything required to organize daily excursions to Rano Raraku, Tongariki, and Anakena beach sits within a ten-minute walk. The tradeoff: roosters and motorbikes start early.

Best for
First-timerstravelers without a rental caranyone who wants tour desks and restaurants at their door
Walk times
  • Caleta fishing harbor 8 min
  • Tahai moai platform 20 min
  • Mataveri International Airport 15 min
Skip if: You need ocean views or silence in the mornings. Atamu Tekena gets lively and loud before 7am.
Local tip: The artisan market on Te Pito o Te Henua street sells handmade moai carvings for half the airport price. Buy here on your second day, not on departure morning when selection is picked over.

Caleta Hanga Roa

The harbor end: sunsets, fishing boats, fewer tour groups

Mid-range $90-$260/night

Caleta Hanga Roa lines the western waterfront along Avenida Pont where the small fishing harbor opens to the Pacific. Guesthouses here face the ocean directly and sit within a twelve-minute walk of the Tahai ceremonial complex, the best sunset spot on the island. The coastal path connects Caleta to both the town center and Tahai without crossing any main roads. Accommodation skews toward mid-range lodges and compact boutique guesthouses. Restaurants thin out compared to Centro, but two or three solid spots serving fresh local fish operate within easy walking distance. Caleta fills at dusk with photographers.

Best for
Couplesphotographersanyone who wants a Pacific sunset without boarding a tour bus
Walk times
  • Atamu Tekena market 8 min
  • Tahai ahu moai platform 12 min
  • Rano Kau crater trailhead 25 min
Skip if: You are on a strict budget or need a wide restaurant choice within a five-minute walk.
Local tip: Tahai at sunset is the best free experience on the island. Walk up by 6pm, find a spot on the coastal cliff edge, and watch the moai silhouettes go dark against the sky. No guide, no fee.

Tahai

Quiet residential north, moai five minutes from your door

Budget $50-$140/night

Tahai is the quieter northern end of Hanga Roa, clustered along the coastal road curving toward the Tahai ceremonial complex. Family-run residenciales line streets like Avenida Simon Paoa, typically including breakfast and a local feel that larger hotels do not replicate. You are a longer walk from the main restaurant strip but the Tahai ahu, which includes the only moai on the island with restored coral eyes, is five minutes on foot. Coastal cliffs here are accessible without a car. Budget and slow travelers consistently rate this neighborhood their favorite base after the fact.

Best for
Budget travelersslow travelersphotographers who want the Tahai sunset and a quiet place to return to
Walk times
  • Tahai ahu with restored coral eyes 5 min
  • Hanga Roa Centro 22 min
  • Mataveri airport 35 min
Skip if: You want restaurants and a bar scene within a short walk. The 22-minute walk to Centro adds up on multi-day stays.
Local tip: Book residenciales directly via email, not through booking platforms. Many families add breakfast and airport pickup when contacted personally. Rates run 15 to 20 percent below listed prices.

Mataveri

Airport zone, Rano Kau on your doorstep

Budget $60-$160/night

Mataveri sits at the southern edge of Hanga Roa around Avenida Hotu Matua near Mataveri International Airport, the island's only air link to the mainland. This neighborhood is the closest base to Rano Kau, the ancient 1.6km-wide volcanic crater, and to Orongo ceremonial village perched on its rim above the sea. Hotels here are practical and affordable, built for early-departure travelers and volcano hikers rather than sightseers. The town center is a 15-minute walk north along the main road. Rano Kau trailhead starts directly from the neighborhood, making early-morning hikes before tour groups arrive genuinely convenient.

Best for
Hikers targeting Rano Kautravelers with early flightsbudget travelers who want proximity to the airport
Walk times
  • Mataveri International Airport 5 min
  • Hanga Roa Centro 15 min
  • Rano Kau crater trailhead 20 min
Skip if: You want ocean views or harbor atmosphere. Mataveri faces inland with limited coastal access.
Local tip: Start the Rano Kau rim trail at 7am. The crater hike takes 90 minutes and you will have the caldera lake almost to yourself before 9am when the first tour buses pull in from Centro.

Is Easter Island expensive to stay on?

Yes. Budget guesthouses start around $50 per night and mid-range hotels run $100 to $200. The main upscale property, Hangaroa Eco Village on the western cliffs, charges $300 to $500. Everything is flown in from Santiago, which pushes all prices up. Book at least three months ahead for January through March when Chilean summer fills every room on the island.

Do I need a rental car to get around Easter Island?

Not if you stay in Hanga Roa Centro or Caleta. Both neighborhoods put restaurants, shops, and the Tahai moai within walking distance. For Rano Raraku, Anakena beach, and the southern coastal ahu platforms you need transport. Rental cars run $60 to $80 per day, ATVs $50 to $70, and bicycles $15 to $20. Most visitors rent for two or three days mid-stay and walk the rest of the time.

How far in advance should I book accommodation on Easter Island?

Three months minimum for January and February. The island has fewer than 200 hotel rooms across all categories combined. Peak season books out fast. Shoulder season from April through June and September through November gives more flexibility, but quality guesthouses still fill two to four weeks out. Email residenciales directly for the best rates and to confirm breakfast is included.

Which area is closest to the moai?

Tahai neighborhood puts you five minutes on foot from the Tahai ahu, one of the most photogenic platforms on the island and the only one with restored moai eyes. Hanga Roa Centro is 20 minutes from Tahai on foot. The major east-coast moai at Rano Raraku and Tongariki are 16 to 18km away regardless of which neighborhood you pick. Rent transport for those sites.
