Paris, France

Classic Europe at its most polished

Mid-range $110-$280/night

The 1st and 4th arrondissements put you within 10 minutes walk of the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Marais. Rue de Rivoli runs the length of the Right Bank with hotels at every price point. Boutique picks cluster on Ile Saint-Louis. The 7th is quieter and closer to the Eiffel Tower. Avoid the area around Gare du Nord unless your budget is tight and you arrive late. Breakfast at a zinc bar on Rue Montorgueil costs 4 euros. Metro tickets are 2.15 euros each and trains run until 1am. Three nights here covers the main highlights without rushing.

Best for
First-time Europe visitorscoupleshistory and art lovers
Walk times
  • Louvre Museum 8 min
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral 12 min
  • Eiffel Tower 15 min
Skip if: You hate crowds, want value for money, or are traveling solo on a tight budget
Local tip: Book hotels on Ile Saint-Louis or in the Marais for walkability. Skip the Champs-Elysees area entirely unless someone else is paying.

Barcelona, Spain

Sun, Gaudi, and genuinely good tapas

Mid-range $85-$200/night

The Eixample district sits between the old city and the sea, with Passeig de Gracia cutting through the center. From here you walk 12 minutes to the Sagrada Familia and 20 minutes to Las Ramblas. Carrer del Consell de Cent and Carrer de Valencia have mid-range hotels without the tourist markups of the Gothic Quarter. The Born neighborhood is better for eating out. Barceloneta is fun for a night but noisy in summer. Avoid hotels on Las Ramblas itself, overpriced and not safe for bags. Metro costs 1.70 euros per ride. Most major sites open at 9am.

Skip if: You want quiet evenings or are traveling in July and August on a tight budget
Local tip: Stay in Eixample, not the Gothic Quarter. Better value, safer streets, and you can walk everywhere that matters.

Prague, Czech Republic

Medieval streets, half the price of Western Europe

Budget $55-$150/night

The Old Town neighborhood around Staromestske namesti is the tourist center but prices have crept up. Vinohrady, 2km southeast via metro line A, gives you quieter streets, local restaurants on Namesti Miru, and hotels from $55 a night. Trams run every 6 minutes to Old Town Square. The Castle District on Hradcany ridge is atmospheric but steep, and most restaurants there target tourists. Wenceslas Square is fine for budget hotels but noisy. A Czech beer costs 1.50 euros at a local pub on Nerudova Street. Most major sites cost 15 to 20 euros to enter.

  • Charles Bridge 10 min
  • Prague Castle 25 min

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Canal city with world-class museums and easy rail connections

Mid-range $120-$250/night

The Jordaan neighborhood along Prinsengracht is the most livable part of Amsterdam, with independent restaurants on Haarlemmerdijk and hotels on quiet canal streets. Museumplein hotels put you next to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. The Red Light District area is fine but overrated for stays. From Amsterdam Centraal you can reach Brussels in 2 hours, Paris in 3.5 hours, and London in 4 hours by train. Day trips to Haarlem take 17 minutes. A GVB day ticket covers all trams for 8.50 euros. Bikes rent from 12 euros per day and lanes go everywhere.

Best for
Museum loverscouplestravelers using Amsterdam as a European rail hubcyclists
Walk times
  • Rijksmuseum 5 min
  • Anne Frank House 10 min
  • Amsterdam Centraal Station 20 min
Skip if: You want warm weather, beaches, or affordable eats because Amsterdam is expensive
Local tip: Stay in Jordaan or near Museumplein. Avoid Leidseplein for sleeping, too noisy on weekends. Book 3 months ahead for June and July.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Europe?

Prague is the most affordable major European destination right now. A decent hotel in Vinohrady costs $55-80 a night, a sit-down dinner runs $10-15, and a local beer is under $2. Budapest and Krakow are comparable. Western European cities like Paris, Amsterdam, or Zurich cost 2 to 3 times more for the same quality.

Where should first-time visitors to Europe stay?

Paris or Barcelona for a first trip. Paris covers the iconic sights in 3 to 4 days: Louvre, Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame. Barcelona adds beach and Gaudi architecture. Both have strong transport links for day trips. Stick to the 1st to 4th arrondissements in Paris and Eixample in Barcelona to stay near the action.

Which European city is best for a long weekend?

Prague wins for long weekends. Flights are cheap from most European capitals, hotels average $70-100 a night, and the Old Town is compact enough to cover on foot in 2 days. Amsterdam is close behind if you want museums and canal scenery. Barcelona works well but factor in more travel time and higher cost.

How far in advance should I book hotels in Europe?

3 to 4 months ahead for summer in Paris, Barcelona, and Amsterdam. These cities fill up fast and last-minute prices double. Prague and Central European cities are more forgiving, but still book 6 to 8 weeks out for July and August. Shoulder season in April-May and September-October allows 2 to 4 weeks notice without major price penalties.
