01

Denarau Island

The easiest entry point, but you pay for it

Budget $0-$0/night

Denarau Road runs the length of this reclaimed island, connecting the Sofitel, Radisson, Sheraton, Hilton, and Wyndham resorts in a tight 2km strip. Port Denarau Marina sits at the eastern tip, with South Sea Cruises ferries to the Mamanucas departing at 8:30am, 10am, and noon. Nadi town is 15 minutes by taxi for FJD 8, where MH Superstore and the municipal market sell kava root and fresh roti. Nothing inside the resort gates is walkable at night; it is all polished paths and golf carts. The airport is 20 minutes east on Queens Road. Convenient, yes. Local, not at all.

Best for
First-time visitorsfamilies with young childrentravelers wanting easy daily island ferry access
Walk times
  • Sofitel Fiji to Port Denarau Marina 12 min
  • Marina ferry terminal to Wyndham resort strip 18 min
  • Any resort to Nadi town centre: not walkable, taxi FJD 8 min
Skip if: You want genuine local culture, walkable restaurants outside the resort, or value for money
Local tip: The South Sea Cruises ferry to Mana Island costs FJD 70 return. Buy direct at the marina ticket office, not through your resort concierge, and save around 30%.

Coral Coast

Where long-term visitors actually stay

Budget $0-$0/night

Queens Road hugs Viti Levu's south shore for 80km from Sigatoka to just west of Pacific Harbour. The Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Warwick Fiji anchor the western cluster near Korotogo village, 3km east of Sigatoka town. Most resorts sit directly on beach with fringing reef visible at low tide, 50 to 80 metres out. Sigatoka has a proper riverside market selling tropical fruit for FJD 1 each, local bakeries on Sigatoka Road, and a main street with hardware stores and pharmacies. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park entry is FJD 15. Rental cars run FJD 80 per day from Nadi Airport; you do not need a resort shuttle here.

Best for

Walk times
  • Korotogo village centre to Sigatoka market 35 min
  • Outrigger Fiji to Sigatoka Sand Dunes car park 10 min

Pacific Harbour

Fiji's dive capital with real grit

Budget $0-$0/night

Queens Road cuts straight through Pacific Harbour township, 50km west of Suva. Arts Village on the main road is the commercial centre, where Aqua-Trek and Beqa Adventure Divers both run daily shark dives on Beqa Lagoon. Uprising Beach Resort sits at the end of Cagilaba Road, 800 metres south of the highway. Navua River white-water rafting departs from the boat ramp on Navua Road, 5km north. The township has a Bounty supermarket, a fuel station, and three restaurants that close by 9pm. Suva's Colonial War Memorial Hospital is 45 minutes east. Beqa Island is 30 minutes by boat: the bull shark dive runs year-round from 8:30am.

Mamanuca Islands

The postcard Fiji, if you can afford it

Budget $0-$0/night

The Mamanucas sit 20 to 40km northwest of Port Denarau, reached by South Sea Cruises ferry (FJD 70 to FJD 130 return depending on island) or Turtle Airways seaplane (FJD 400 return, 15 minutes each way). Mana Island and Malolo Island are the largest, each with multiple resorts. Tokoriki Island Resort and Likuliku Lagoon Resort are adults-only boutiques in the $500 to $900 range. No cars exist on any island. Fringing reef starts 30 to 50 metres from shore. Food and alcohol run 3 to 4 times Nadi prices. All-inclusive packages make financial sense for stays over 3 nights given the captive-market dining costs.

Best for
Honeymoonsanniversariessnorkelerstravelers who want full disconnection from the mainland
Walk times
  • Mana Island eastern beach to western backpacker camp 25 min
  • Malolo Island Resort main beach to snorkel reef entry 3 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget, need reliable Wi-Fi for work, or plan to stay more than 6 nights. Island fatigue is real.
Local tip: Mana Island Backpackers on the western beach charges FJD 55 per night and shares the same fringing reef as the FJD 500 resorts 2km away on the eastern shore.

Where should first-time visitors to Fiji stay?

Denarau Island is the practical first choice for newcomers. It sits 20 minutes from Nadi Airport on Queens Road and puts the entire Mamanuca island chain within a short ferry ride from Port Denarau Marina. The Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort and Radisson Blu both get consistent four-star reviews from $180 per night. Skip Denarau if you are staying more than 5 nights and want to see anything beyond a resort perimeter.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Fiji?

The Coral Coast offers the strongest value, with mid-range resorts from $80 per night and direct reef frontage. Bedarra Beach Inn near Korotogo and Crusoe's Retreat both come in under $120 per night with ocean views. Sigatoka town is 10 minutes away for local restaurants at FJD 8 to FJD 15 per meal. For genuine budget travel, Mana Island Backpackers in the Mamanucas charges FJD 55 per dorm bed. Factor in FJD 70 for the ferry each way.

Which area in Fiji is best for diving?

Pacific Harbour is the clear answer. Beqa Lagoon hosts one of the most documented bull shark dives in the world, running daily at FJD 350 per person from Arts Village. Aqua-Trek and Beqa Adventure Divers both offer PADI open water certification from FJD 600. For soft coral macro diving, the Outrigger Fiji on the Coral Coast runs two-tank boat dives from FJD 180 and accesses sites on the Beqa Lagoon outer edge.

How do you get from Nadi to the Mamanuca Islands?

South Sea Cruises runs daily ferries from Port Denarau Marina. Fares range from FJD 70 return to Treasure Island to FJD 130 return to Mana Island, departing at 8:30am and 10am. Turtle Airways seaplanes reach any Mamanuca island in 15 minutes for around FJD 400 return per person. Buy ferry tickets directly at the marina ticket office rather than through hotel concierges to avoid the standard 15% markup.
