London Bridge station is 6 minutes away with direct trains to Gatwick in 30 minutes. The riverside walk from Waterloo to Tower Bridge takes 35 minutes and covers more landmarks than any bus tour. Bermondsey Street, running south from London Bridge, has independent restaurants with no tourist markup. Southwark Cathedral is free and genuinely worth the 10 minutes. Prices here run 15-20% lower than Covent Garden for the same central location.

Best for

Walk times
  • Tate Modern 5 min
  • Borough Market 8 min
  • Tower Bridge 18 min

What is the best area to stay in London for first-timers?

Covent Garden or South Bank. Covent Garden puts you 8 minutes walk from Trafalgar Square and the West End theaters. South Bank gives you Tate Modern, Borough Market, and the Thames riverside path at 15-20% lower prices. Both are well connected and have hotels across all budget levels. Covent Garden wins on walkability; South Bank wins on value.

How much does a hotel in central London cost per night in 2026?

Budget hotels in Shoreditch run $80-130 per night. Mid-range in South Bank runs $160-280. A decent mid-range in Covent Garden costs $200-320. Kensington four-star hotels start around $350. Prices jump 30-50% in June through August and around Christmas and New Year. Book at least 6 weeks ahead for summer travel.

Is Shoreditch a good base for a first trip to London?

Only if saving money is the main priority. Shoreditch runs 30-40% cheaper than the West End and has excellent food and weekend markets, but Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and the Tower of London all require a Tube ride. If this is your first London trip and you want to walk to the classic sights, stay in Covent Garden or South Bank instead.

Which London neighborhood has the best transport links for first-timers?

Covent Garden sits on the Piccadilly and Northern lines and is central enough to walk most attractions. For airport access, South Bank is the strongest choice: London Bridge connects to Gatwick in 30 minutes. Shoreditch gives you Liverpool Street station, which connects to Heathrow in 45 minutes on the Elizabeth line. Kensington covers all three of Heathrow, Gatwick, and Victoria via the District and Circle lines.
