Carbon Beach

The closest thing to a private beach in Southern California

Luxury $450-$900/night

Carbon Beach runs along Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu Pier and Las Virgenes Road. The sand is narrow at high tide but you are 30 feet from the Pacific. Geoffrey's Malibu at 27400 PCH is the neighborhood restaurant worth the splurge. Nobu Malibu is four minutes north on foot. There is no grocery store in walking range and no town center. That is the point. Uber everything or rent a convertible and drive to Paradise Cove for lunch. Accommodations are vacation rentals and boutique inns right on the water, booked months out in summer.

Best for
Couples celebrating somethinganyone who needs direct beach access from their room
Walk times
  • Malibu Pier 8 min
  • Nobu Malibu 4 min
  • Surfrider Beach 12 min
Skip if: You need walkable groceries or plan any car-free days
Local tip: High tide between November and March can cover most of the sand by 7am. Check tide charts the evening before and plan your morning walk early.

Point Dume

Residential Malibu with the best headland views on the coast

Luxury $280-$650/night

Point Dume sits roughly 20 miles west of Santa Monica via PCH. The bluffs drop straight to Westward Beach, and the trail to the headland is 15 minutes on foot from the trailhead at Westward Beach Road. Zuma Beach is one mile north. There are no hotels on the bluffs. You are booking vacation rentals on Cliffside Drive or Grayfox Street. Vintage Grocers on Encinal Canyon Road handles provisions. Quiet during the week, busy Saturday mornings when surfers flood Zuma. Paradise Cove Beach Cafe at 28128 PCH is the nearest casual lunch option.

Best for

Malibu Village (Civic Center)

The only part of Malibu where you can walk to multiple restaurants

Luxury $320-$600/night

The Civic Center area sits at the intersection of PCH and Cross Creek Road. Malibu Country Mart at 3835 Cross Creek Road has Nobu, Soho House Malibu, Sunlife Organics, and a Sunday farmers market running 9am to 2pm year-round. Trattoria Fiona is five minutes on foot. Hotels here sit a quarter mile from the water but the walkability is real. The Surfrider hotel on PCH is the anchor property and worth booking for design and beach proximity. Malibu Lagoon State Beach and its surf break are eight minutes on foot.

Best for
First-timersfood-focused travelerscouples who want both beach and restaurant options
Walk times
  • Malibu Country Mart 5 min
  • Malibu Lagoon State Beach 8 min
  • Surfrider Beach surf break 10 min
Skip if: You want total seclusion or direct oceanfront rooms
Local tip: The Sunday farmers market at Malibu Country Mart is genuinely local, not touristy. The prepared food stalls sell better breakfast than anything within 10 miles.

Zuma Beach / Trancas Canyon

Surf culture Malibu, 26 miles from the city and completely different

Luxury $220-$500/night

Zuma Beach at 30000 Pacific Coast Highway stretches just over two miles of wide uncrowded sand. Trancas Canyon Road leads inland toward the Santa Monica Mountains. Trancas Country Market on PCH handles groceries and has a coffee counter. Staying here means vacation rentals on Canyon Drive or PCH-adjacent homes. You are 40 minutes from Santa Monica without traffic. Neptune's Net seafood shack at 42505 PCH is the required lunch stop. Leo Carrillo State Beach is four miles further north and worth the afternoon drive. Commit to the isolation or this area frustrates you.

Best for
Surfersfamilies with kidstravelers who want maximum beach space without crowds
Walk times
  • Zuma Beach main entrance 7 min
  • Trancas Country Market 10 min
  • Neptune's Net at 42505 PCH 14 min
Skip if: You need easy restaurant access or plan time in Santa Monica
Local tip: Zuma parking fills by 10am on summer weekends. Stay within walking distance and skip the lot entirely. That alone justifies the vacation rental premium.

What is the best area to stay in Malibu for a weekend getaway?

Malibu Village near Cross Creek Road is the most practical for a first weekend. You get Surfrider Beach in 10 minutes on foot, real restaurants within walking distance including Nobu and Trattoria Fiona, and the Sunday farmers market at Malibu Country Mart. Carbon Beach is better if budget is not a concern and you want direct oceanfront access with no compromises.

How far is Malibu from Los Angeles for a weekend trip?

Malibu starts roughly 15 miles from Santa Monica via PCH. The drive takes 30 minutes on a clear Friday afternoon or two hours in summer beach traffic. Leave LA before noon on Friday or after 8pm to avoid the worst of it. The return on Sunday is worst between 3pm and 7pm heading east.

Is Malibu worth visiting for just one night?

Yes, but stay as close to the water as your budget allows. One night at the Surfrider hotel or a Carbon Beach rental is a genuinely different experience from any LA hotel. Arrive Friday evening, have dinner at Geoffrey's Malibu at 27400 PCH, walk the beach before 9am Saturday, and drive back late. That covers the essential Malibu experience in under 24 hours.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Malibu for a weekend?

Zuma Beach and the Trancas Canyon area average $220 to $500 per night for vacation rentals. You get limited walkable amenities but Zuma is one of the widest public beaches in Los Angeles County. Neptune's Net seafood at 42505 PCH is a genuinely good lunch stop. Malibu Beach Inn near the pier also has smaller rooms at lower rates than full oceanfront rentals.
