01

Bora Bora

The postcard island. Worth every franc, if you can afford it.

Luxury $450-$1800/night

Bora Bora delivers exactly what you expect, and that is not a complaint. Matira Beach, the only public beach on the island, runs along the southern tip near the Le Maitai Polynesia resort on Route du Matira. Vaitape, the main village, sits on the western shore where ferries dock on Rue du Bac. Most guests stay on the outer motu in overwater bungalows reached by boat transfer. The lagoon color is genuinely that color. It is not a filter. Rates drop 30 to 40 percent May through October. Book six months out for any of the four major resorts.

Best for
Honeymoonsanniversary tripsonce-in-a-lifetime overwater bungalow experiences
Walk times
  • Matira Beach to Le Maitai resort entrance 4 min
  • Vaitape dock to Restaurant Bloody Mary's on Route du Matira 12 min
  • Matira Point to Sofitel Private Island pier 8 min
Skip if: You are on a budget or want cultural depth beyond lagoon views and resort pools
Local tip: Stay on the main island near Vaitape if you want restaurants within walking distance. Motu resorts are stunning but you are fully marooned at your resort for every meal unless you pay for boat transfers.

Moorea

All the beauty, half the price, twice the adventure.

Mid-range $120-$600/night

Moorea is 17km from Tahiti by fast ferry (30 minutes, 1,200 CFP from Papeete's Vaiare Terminal). Cook's Bay on the northeast coast has the best mountain views, a cluster of restaurants along the waterfront near Maharepa village on Route de la Baie de Cook, and mid-range hotels within walking distance of the water. Opunohu Bay on the northwest is quieter, with trails up to the Belvedere lookout. Haapiti on the west coast has the best snorkeling reef and the Club Med. Scooter rental runs about 4,000 CFP a day and you can circle the island in under three hours.

Best for
Couples wanting romance without the Bora Bora price tagdivershikersrepeat visitors
Walk times
  • Maharepa village center to Cook's Bay restaurant strip 6 min
  • Haapiti beach to Hilton Moorea overwater bungalow pier 3 min
  • Opunohu Bay road parking to Belvedere lookout 45 min
Skip if: You want the flagship overwater bungalow experience without any compromise on luxury
Local tip: The Hilton Moorea overwater bungalows sit directly above clear water and cost roughly a third of Bora Bora prices. Book the lagoon-facing category. The garden-view overwater rooms are a waste.

Papeete, Tahiti

Skip it or start here. Most travelers get this wrong.

Mid-range $80-$350/night

Papeete is the capital and your entry point at Faaa International Airport. Most visitors connect onward immediately, but one night here makes real sense for jet lag recovery before island-hopping. Boulevard Pomare runs along the waterfront with cafes and the ferry terminal for outer islands. The Marche de Papeete on Rue du Marechal Foch sells fresh produce, vanilla, and black pearls worth a morning visit. Downtown hotels are business-grade, not resort-grade. The InterContinental Tahiti Resort, located south of the center on the RDO coastal road near Faa'a, has the only decent beach access near Papeete.

Best for
Transit nightsbudget travelersbusiness travelersthose who want to explore Tahiti's interior
Walk times
  • Boulevard Pomare waterfront to Marche de Papeete 7 min
  • Place Jacques Chirac to inter-island ferry terminal 4 min
  • Faaa Airport to city center by taxi 10 min
Skip if: You came specifically for beaches and lagoons. Papeete has neither worth extending your stay for.
Local tip: The InterContinental Tahiti Resort is 6km south of downtown on the coastal road and has the only real beach near Papeete. Every downtown hotel is beachless. Do not book a beach room downtown.

Huahine

The real French Polynesia. Almost nobody goes here.

Mid-range $80-$300/night

Huahine gets about 3 percent of the visitors Bora Bora does. Fare, the main village, has a dock, a handful of pension guesthouses on Rue du Fare, a small market, and four restaurants worth visiting. Maeva Village, 5km east along Route des Marae, sits beside ancient stone marae temples you can walk to without a guide. The pension guesthouses run by local families charge 8,000 to 15,000 CFP per night and often include home-cooked poisson cru. Rent a bicycle in Fare for 1,500 CFP and explore both islands connected by the bridge at Maeva properly. Almost no resort infrastructure. This is the point.

Best for
Travelers who have done the famous islands and want something genuinely localslow travelerssnorkelers
Walk times
  • Fare dock to village market on Rue du Fare 3 min
  • Fare main street to Maeva Village junction 12 min
  • Maeva Village roadside to closest marae stone platform 5 min
Skip if: You need reliable air conditioning, resort amenities, or stable wifi for remote work
Local tip: Pension Mauarii on the northern coast has overwater bungalows at a fraction of Bora Bora rates. Book direct by email rather than through OTAs. You will get a better room and genuine local advice about where to snorkel.

What is the best island to stay on in French Polynesia?

Moorea gives the best all-around value. You get dramatic mountain scenery, clear lagoons, overwater bungalows from around $200 per night, and a 30-minute ferry from Papeete. Bora Bora is more iconic but genuinely expensive, with most resorts starting at $500 per night. First visit with a flexible budget? Split five nights on Moorea and four on Bora Bora. You get both without the regret of choosing one.

How much does it cost to stay in French Polynesia?

Budget travelers using family pensions in Huahine or Raiatea can manage $80 to $150 per night including breakfast. Mid-range hotels on Moorea run $150 to $400 per night. Bora Bora resorts with overwater bungalows start at $450 and reach past $1,800. Budget for inter-island transport too. The Moorea ferry from Papeete costs around $10 each way. Flights to Bora Bora cost $150 to $300 round trip.

Is Moorea or Bora Bora better for a first visit?

For most travelers, Moorea. It delivers around 80 percent of the Bora Bora experience at 40 percent of the price. The lagoon is clear, hiking is far better, and you feel less trapped at your resort. Bora Bora wins on sheer iconic beauty and overwater bungalow quality at the Four Seasons or St. Regis level. Honeymooners who prioritize romance and the full postcard moment over value: go to Bora Bora.

When is the best time to visit French Polynesia?

May through October is the dry season, temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius and almost no rain. July and August are peak months with higher prices and more crowds. The wet season from November through April brings occasional cyclone risk but room rates drop 30 to 40 percent and crowds thin significantly. Avoid February and March if weather makes you nervous. May and October give the best combination of weather and value.
