West Glacier and Apgar Village

Closest beds to Going-to-the-Sun Road

Budget $0-$0/night

West Glacier sits right at the park's main west entrance on US-2, where Going-to-the-Sun Road begins. Apgar Village, 2 miles inside the gate on Apgar Loop Road, has the visitor center and boat rentals on Lake McDonald. Most lodges cluster along the lakeshore near the road. Lake McDonald Lodge, built in 1914 on the lake's southeast end, is the historic centerpiece. Being at the gate means you hit the 6am vehicle reservation window without a drive. Prices are high for the quality on offer. Dining options are thin. Outside peak season, most properties close entirely by mid-October.

Best for
First-timers who want to drive Going-to-the-Sun Road at sunrise before vehicle permit quotas fill
Walk times
  • West Entrance Station 5 min
  • Apgar Visitor Center 25 min
  • Lake McDonald shore 10 min
Skip if: You want dining variety or plan to spend most time on the east side near Many Glacier
Local tip: The free park shuttle stops at Apgar Village. Park once and skip the vehicle reservation stress for interior stops along Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Whitefish

Best town base, 25 miles from the west gate

Budget $0-$0/night

Whitefish is a real town with real restaurants, bars, and hotels spread around Central Avenue and Spokane Avenue downtown. It sits 25 miles west of the park entrance on US-93. You get actual food choices: Loula's Cafe on Central Avenue opens at 7am, Great Northern Bar pours late. Whitefish Lake and downtown breweries make rest days worthwhile rather than a wasted drive. Drive time to the west entrance is 30 minutes on US-2. Amtrak's Empire Builder stops at Whitefish Station downtown for arrivals without a car. Accommodation ranges from budget motels on US-93 to boutique hotels a short walk from Central Avenue.

Best for
Couples and families who want good dinner options and real infrastructure after long park days
Walk times
  • Central Avenue restaurants and bars 5 min
  • Whitefish Lake public beach 15 min
  • Amtrak Whitefish Station 10 min
Skip if: You plan to do Many Glacier or St. Mary daily, which adds 90 minutes of driving each way
Local tip: Book Loula's Cafe for breakfast before your park day. They open at 7am and the line moves fast. Worth it before a full day on the trails.

East Glacier Park Village

Quiet east-side gateway with a historic lodge

Budget $0-$0/night

East Glacier Park Village sits at the junction of US-2 and MT-49 on the park's southeast corner. Glacier Park Lodge, an Amtrak stop and historic 1913 property anchored by 800-year-old Douglas firs in the lobby, centers the small town. Two Medicine Valley is 11 miles north via MT-49, one of the least-crowded corners of the entire park. The village is walkable: the lodge, a handful of restaurants on MT-49, and a few outfitter shops span four blocks. Crowds are noticeably thinner than west-side options. Reaching St. Mary and Going-to-the-Sun Road requires a 45-minute drive north on US-89 through Kiowa.

Best for
Hikers targeting Two Medicine and Cut Bank valleysor Amtrak arrivals without a rental car
Walk times
  • Glacier Park Lodge front entrance 3 min
  • East Glacier Amtrak platform 5 min
  • Two Medicine trailheads 0 min
Skip if: Going-to-the-Sun Road is your main goal. The 45-minute each-way drive adds up fast over a week.
Local tip: Two Medicine Lake has zero vehicle reservation requirements. Show up early and you almost always get in without the permit headache that plagues the west side.

St. Mary

East entrance to Going-to-the-Sun, 20 miles from Many Glacier

Budget $0-$0/night

St. Mary sits at the east end of Going-to-the-Sun Road where US-89 meets the park boundary and St. Mary Lake opens up ahead. From here, Many Glacier Valley is about 20 miles north via US-89 and Swiftcurrent Road through Babb. Rising Sun Motor Inn and Cabins operate inside the park just 6 miles west on Going-to-the-Sun Road with the best views of St. Mary Lake. Outside the boundary, a cluster of motels and campgrounds along US-89 offer cheaper beds close to both the east entrance and Many Glacier. The location cuts 45 minutes off daily driving versus East Glacier. Wind is serious here, especially through June.

Best for
Hikers prioritizing Many Glacier trails including Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake on the east side
Walk times
  • St. Mary Visitor Center 5 min
  • St. Mary Lake overlook 15 min
  • St. Mary Falls trailhead 0 min
Skip if: You want restaurants or nightlife. St. Mary has one camp store and very limited dining options.
Local tip: Many Glacier Hotel books out in February every year. If you miss that window, Rising Sun Motor Inn is the next best inside-park option and often holds last-minute availability into July.

What is the best area to stay for first-time visitors to Glacier National Park?

West Glacier or Whitefish. West Glacier puts you at the Going-to-the-Sun Road entrance for the 6am vehicle reservation window without any drive. Whitefish gives you better hotels and real restaurants at prices $70 to $120 lower per night, with a 30-minute drive to the gate. Most first-timers staying 3 or more nights do better in Whitefish. The savings cover two good dinners and the extra driving is minimal on a full-day park itinerary.

How far in advance should you book hotels near Glacier National Park?

For July and August, book 6 to 9 months out. Many Glacier Hotel and Lake McDonald Lodge sell out by February for peak summer. West Glacier lodges go next. Whitefish has more inventory and you can sometimes find rooms 2 to 3 months out, but prices climb sharply after April. September is easier: 4 to 6 weeks is usually enough, and you get lower prices with smaller crowds and the same scenery.

Is it cheaper to stay outside the park boundary near Glacier?

Yes, noticeably. Inside-park lodges like Many Glacier Hotel run $280 to $400 per night for standard rooms in July. Whitefish hotels start around $89 to $130 in the same period. The trade-off is a 25 to 45-minute daily drive to the entrance. For a 7-night trip, staying in Whitefish saves $700 to $1,400 over inside-park lodging. If you are doing 2 nights focused on Many Glacier specifically, pay for proximity. Otherwise, base in Whitefish.

Which side of Glacier National Park is better for hiking?

The east side, specifically Many Glacier. Accessible from St. Mary by driving 20 miles north to Swiftcurrent Road, Many Glacier Valley has the highest concentration of iconic hikes per mile: Grinnell Glacier is 11 miles round trip, Iceberg Lake is 9.7 miles, and Ptarmigan Tunnel is 11 miles with 2,300 feet of gain. The west side has strong trails too, but Many Glacier is what serious hikers plan entire trips around. Stay in St. Mary if hiking is your primary goal.
