The Strip (Gulf Shores Blvd / Hwy 59)

The center of the action, for better or worse

Mid-range $120-$280/night

Gulf Shores Blvd meets Highway 59 at the hub of all tourist activity. Hotels, restaurants, and beach access cluster within a few blocks. Tacky Jack's on the strip serves cold buckets all afternoon, and Lulu's at Homeport Marina is a short drive north on the ICW. The Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express on Gulf Shores Blvd put you 200 feet from the sand. Expect noise on weekends, families with kids everywhere, and parking lots that fill by 10am in summer. Gulf Shores Blvd runs east-west along the shore, and most hotels sit between 1st and 8th Street.

Best for
First-timersfamiliesanyone who wants everything walkable
Walk times
  • Beach 2 min
  • Souvenir shops on Hwy 59 5 min
  • Lulu's at Homeport Marina 15 min
Skip if: You hate crowds. Memorial Day through Labor Day is relentless here.
Local tip: Park once and do not move the car. The strip is small enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes.

West Beach

Same white sand, half the foot traffic

Mid-range $140-$320/night

West Beach Blvd stretches west from the Hwy 59 intersection toward Fort Morgan. The further west you go, the quieter it gets. Plantation Road and Laguna Drive are lined with condo complexes rather than hotels, so you are mostly looking at vacation rentals. The beach here is just as white but noticeably less crowded. No restaurants within walking distance past the first mile. Drive or bike to everything. Fort Morgan Road (Hwy 180) eventually leads to Fort Morgan, a Civil War-era brick fortification worth a morning trip. Budget travelers will not necessarily save money here versus the strip.

Best for
Couplesgroups renting a condoanyone who wants a quieter beach experience
Walk times
  • Beach 3 min
  • Gulf Place shops and dining 8 min
  • Strip restaurants on Hwy 59 10 min
Skip if: You do not have a car. Nothing is walkable past the beach itself.
Local tip: The beach access points on Plantation Road have way less competition for chairs and umbrellas than the main public access at Hwy 59.

Gulf State Park Area

6,150 acres of protected land and the cleanest stretch of beach in the county

Luxury $250-$420/night

East Beach Blvd leads east toward Gulf State Park, where the Lodge at Gulf State Park opened in 2018. It is a Hilton-managed property on 6,150 acres of protected coastal land. The fishing pier stretches 1,540 feet into the Gulf, the longest on Alabama's coast. Trails connect to Lake Shelby for kayaking. You are 2 miles east of the main strip, so a car is essential. East Beach Blvd has a dedicated bike lane for the 4-mile ride into town. Summer rates at the Lodge run $250 to $400 per night, but you get uncrowded beach right outside the door.

Best for
Nature loverscouples who want spacebirders (the park hosts over 300 recorded species)
Walk times
  • Beach 5 min
  • Gulf State Park fishing pier 10 min
  • Strip restaurants on Gulf Shores Blvd 20 min
Skip if: You want to walk to bars and restaurants every night. You will not find that here.
Local tip: Book a Gulf State Park campground site for around $40 per night if you have gear. You get the same beach access as the Lodge at a fraction of the price.

Canal Road / Intracoastal Waterway

The budget pick for anglers, kayakers, and anyone who hates tourist prices

Budget $75-$160/night

Canal Road runs along the Intracoastal Waterway north of the beach. This is Gulf Shores on a budget. Older motels, fish camps, and vacation rentals cluster here, and a room that costs $180 on the Gulf side often runs $90 on Canal Road. A car is required because nothing is within walking distance. Craft Farms Golf Resort sits nearby on County Road 6. The trade-off is real: no sand, no surf outside your door, but direct waterway access for fishing and kayaking from the back. Best for families renting a full week who plan to cook in and save money for activities.

Best for
Budget travelersfishing and kayaking enthusiastsRV and boat owners
Walk times
  • Nearest beach (drive required) 10 min
  • Publix on Gulf Shores Pkwy 8 min
  • Downtown Gulf Shores 12 min
Skip if: You came specifically for the beach. Every single beach visit requires getting in the car.
Local tip: Rent a kayak from one of the outfitters on Canal Road. You can paddle straight into the Intracoastal and explore for hours without touching a tourist zone.

What is the best area to stay in Gulf Shores for families?

The Strip around Gulf Shores Blvd and Hwy 59 is the easiest choice for families with young kids. Beach access is 2 minutes on foot, restaurants like The Hangout and Tacky Jack's are walkable, and chain hotels with pools line Gulf Shores Blvd between 1st and 8th Street. Gulf State Park is a strong second pick if your kids are older and enjoy kayaking, fishing from the 1,540-foot pier, or biking the 28-mile trail network through the park.

When is the cheapest time to visit Gulf Shores?

October through February offers the lowest hotel rates, often 40 to 60 percent below summer prices. A Gulf Shores Blvd hotel that runs $220 in July can drop to $90 in November. The water is too cold for swimming, but the beach is empty and Gulf State Park trails are genuinely pleasant. April and May are the sweet spot: water reaches 70 to 75 degrees, crowds are manageable, and rates sit around 25 percent below peak summer.

How far is Gulf Shores from the nearest airport?

Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) is about 60 miles north, roughly a 60 to 75 minute drive south on I-65 and Hwy 59. Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is 55 miles east and takes about 60 minutes via Hwy 98. Neither airport has a direct shuttle to Gulf Shores, so plan on renting a car. Rideshare services operate in the area but charge $60 to $90 from either airport.

Is Gulf Shores walkable?

Only on the Strip. The blocks between Hwy 59 and 8th Street along Gulf Shores Blvd are genuinely walkable for beach access, restaurants, and shops. Everywhere else, including West Beach, Gulf State Park, and Canal Road, requires a car for every errand. Gulf Shores has no public transit system, and even exploring adjacent Orange Beach to the east means getting in the car.
