Waikiki, Oahu

The tourist machine. Convenient, crowded, and worth it for first-timers.

Luxury $200-$600/night

Waikiki packs two miles of beach between Diamond Head crater and the Ala Wai Canal. Kalakaua Avenue runs the length of the strip, lined with surf rental shacks, open-air bars, and ABC Stores every 50 feet. You are never more than a 3-minute walk to the ocean from any address in Waikiki. Kuhio Avenue, one block inland, is where locals shop and where the bus lines run. TheBus routes 8 and 20 connect you to downtown Honolulu in 20 minutes and Ala Moana shopping center in 10. Diamond Head State Monument is a 12-minute drive east. Pearl Harbor is 35 minutes on route 20. Evenings on Lewers Street pull a young crowd. The beach faces southwest so afternoon light is spectacular and waves stay gentle enough for beginners. It gets loud at night on the Kalakaua end. Book a room east of Kapiolani Park for a quieter stay.

Walk times
  • Waikiki Beach from most addresses 2 min
  • walk south along Ala Wai Blvd to Ala Moana Center 20 min
  • on TheBus route 20 to Pearl Harbor visitor entrance 35 min
Skip if: You want to experience Hawaii beyond the tourist bubble. Waikiki does not feel like the real island.
Local tip: Stay on the Diamond Head end, east of Kapiolani Park. Same beach access, quieter streets, and prices run 20-30% lower than the main strip.

Wailea, Maui

Five world-class beaches in five miles. Maui's luxury heartland.

Luxury $350-$1500/night

Wailea lines the southwest coast of Maui along Wailea Alanui Drive, a 3-mile road connecting five consecutive white-sand beaches: Keawakapu, Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea, and Polo. Every beach is publicly accessible and genuinely excellent. The Wailea Beach Path is a 1.5-mile paved coastal walkway connecting them, best at sunrise before heat sets in. Wailea Town Center on Wailea Ike Drive has a Whole Foods, coffee shops, and restaurants within a 5-minute walk of most properties. Lahaina is 25 minutes north on Highway 30. The Road to Hana starts 45 minutes northeast. June through August trade winds cool the south coast reliably. November through April is whale season, and humpback whales surface close enough to spot from shore without a boat. Kihei, 10 minutes north, offers the same weather and beach access at half the price for budget-conscious travelers who do not mind the drive.

Best for

Walk times
  • Wailea Beach from most properties on Wailea Alanui Drive 5 min
  • walk along the paved Beach Path between any two beaches 10 min
  • Wailea Town Center Whole Foods and restaurants 5 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or need adventure activities as your main focus. Wailea is a beach-and-relax destination with resort-level prices.
Local tip: Ulua Beach is accessible via a public right-of-way between two resort properties on Wailea Alanui Drive. Free parking at 7am and one of Maui's best snorkel spots with zero entry fee.

Kailua-Kona, Big Island

Manta ray dives, Kona coffee farms, and a real working town.

Mid-range $150-$450/night

Kailua-Kona sits on the dry western Kona coast, anchored by Ali'i Drive, a 6-mile oceanfront road running past lava rock coastline, dive operators, coffee shops, and local restaurants. The town has hardware stores and full grocery markets, so it feels like somewhere people actually live. Kahalu'u Beach Park, 2 miles south on Ali'i Drive, is the island's best beginner snorkel spot, reliably crowded with green sea turtles at any given morning. Kona airport is 7 miles north via Queen Kaahumanu Highway. Hualalai volcano rises directly behind town. Mauna Kea summit, a world-class stargazing site, is 75 minutes east on Saddle Road, with ranger-led tours most nights. Manta ray night dive trips depart from Keauhou Bay, 5 miles south, and run every night weather permits. Coffee farm tours along Highway 180 in the highlands take 30 minutes to reach from town.

Best for

Walk times
  • Ali'i Drive ocean path from central Kona 5 min
  • drive south to Kahalu'u Beach Park snorkel spot 10 min
  • drive to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau historical site 25 min
Skip if: You want a manicured resort experience. Kona is a working town, not a resort bubble. Beaches are small and lava-rocky compared to Maui.
Local tip: Park at the south end of Ali'i Drive near the Keauhou Shopping Center and walk north. Street parking is free after 6pm and the waterfront spots along Ali'i are worth the 15-minute walk.

Poipu, Kauai

Kauai's sunniest corner. Best for families and consistent snorkeling.

Luxury $200-$650/night

Poipu sits on Kauai's south shore, the driest and sunniest side of the island. Poipu Road runs from the Koloa roundabout down to the coast, where Poipu Beach Park splits into a protected family cove on the left and open ocean on the right. Hawaiian monk seals haul out on the beach several times a week. Spouting Horn blowhole is a 5-minute drive west on Lawai Road. The Maha'ulepu Heritage Trail, a 4-mile coastal walking path starting at Shipwreck Beach, delivers sea caves and clifftop views before 8am with almost no other people. Lawai Road also leads inland to Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden, both worth half a day. Koloa town, 5 minutes north, has the island's best plate lunch spots on Koloa Road. The north shore is 1.5 hours away and a completely different island in feel.

Best for
familiessnorkelersreliable sunshinecouples wanting calm beaches
Walk times
  • Poipu Beach Park from central Poipu Road properties 3 min
  • drive west on Lawai Road to Spouting Horn blowhole 5 min
  • drive north to Koloa town restaurants and grocery 5 min
Skip if: You want dramatic scenery and serious hiking. Poipu is flat and beach-focused. Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon require driving to the north or west side.
Local tip: Brennecke's Beach, just east of Poipu Beach Park, is the island's best bodysurf spot. Arrive at low tide, bring fins, and skip the boogie board rental.

Hanalei, Kauai North Shore

The most beautiful bay in Hawaii. Remote, rainy, and worth every inconvenience.

Luxury $180-$700/night

Hanalei sits at the mouth of the Hanalei River, backed by taro fields and Na Pali cliffs visible on clear afternoons. The town is essentially two blocks: Aku Road runs parallel to the bay, and Kuhio Highway cuts through the center with surf shops, plate lunch counters, and a farmers market on Saturday mornings. Hanalei Bay stretches two miles of crescent beach, best for swimming from May through September when north swells flatten. The Kalalau Trail trailhead, Hawaii's most dramatic coastal hike along the Na Pali Coast, is 9 miles west at Ke'e Beach and requires a permit booked in advance. Princeville, 2 miles east on Kuhio Highway, has a full grocery store and more resort-style properties at slightly lower prices. The drive from Lihue Airport takes 90 minutes. That commute is non-negotiable. The north shore rewards the effort better than anywhere else on the islands.

Best for
hikerssurfersphotographerstravelers seeking authentic Hawaii
Walk times
  • walk from Hanalei town center to Black Pot Beach on Weke Road 5 min
  • mile drive west on Kuhio Highway to Ke'e Beach and Kalalau trailhead 9 min
  • walk from Black Pot Beach area to Hanalei town restaurants on Kuhio Hwy 2 min
Skip if: You hate rain or need resort amenities. It rains frequently even in summer. Nearest hospital is 90 minutes away. No room service anywhere.
Local tip: Book Kalalau Trail permits at dlnr.hawaii.gov exactly 90 days in advance. Day hikes to Hanakapi'ai Beach, 2 miles each way, require no permit and are spectacular even in light rain.

Which Hawaiian island is best for a first visit?

Oahu. It gives you the most variety for the least logistical complexity. Waikiki beach is genuinely good, Diamond Head hike takes 90 minutes roundtrip and costs $5 per person, the North Shore surf scene is 45 minutes by car on H-2 and Kamehameha Highway, and Honolulu has real restaurants and nightlife. Maui is better for pure relaxation but has less to do if beaches bore you by day three. The Big Island and Kauai reward repeat visitors who already know what they want.

What is the cheapest island to stay on in Hawaii?

The Big Island runs 20-30% cheaper than Maui or Oahu consistently. Solid vacation rentals in Kailua-Kona start around $150 a night where comparable Maui properties start at $250. Kauai's Hanalei area is expensive despite its remote feel, with limited inventory driving prices up. Oahu has the widest price range because competition is higher, but Waikiki itself runs expensive. For the cheapest trip to Hawaii, fly into Kona and stay in the town center.

Should I stay on one island or island hop in Hawaii?

Stay on one island for trips under 10 days. Inter-island flights cost $80-200 roundtrip and eat a full travel day with airport logistics on both ends. Maui and Oahu are most self-contained for a week. With 12-14 days, combine Oahu (3 nights) with Maui (5 nights) or Kauai (5 nights). The Big Island needs at least 5 nights to see both the dry Kohala-Kona coast and the rainy, waterfall-filled Hilo side.

When is the best time to visit Hawaii?

April through early June and September through October. Crowds drop after spring break and after US schools resume. Prices fall 15-25% compared to the December through March peak. Weather stays 78-85F on south and west shores year-round. North shore areas like Hanalei see more rain November through March with large surf closing some beaches. Whale season on Maui runs December through April, with peak sightings in February.

Do I need a rental car in Hawaii?

Yes on every island except possibly Waikiki for a beach-only trip. On Oahu, TheBus covers most tourist areas without a car and costs $3 per ride. On every other island a rental is non-negotiable. Kauai's north shore is 90 minutes from the airport. The Big Island's two coasts are separated by a 90-minute drive over Saddle Road. Book rental cars at least 4 weeks in advance. Inventory runs tight across all islands, especially Maui, and last-minute rates double.
