Venetian Harbor and Old Town

Best atmosphere, best dining, best evening walks

Budget $0-$0/night

Heraklion's most characterful base sits along 25 Avgoustou Street, where Venetian loggia buildings line the route down to the Koules fortress. Lion Square (Plateia Liontaria) is the social hub: the Morosini Fountain anchors outdoor cafe tables packed by 9pm. Dedalou Street runs pedestrian from Lion Square inland, connecting you to most of the city in 10 minutes on foot. Hotels cluster on side streets like Milidon and Chandakos, shielding you from traffic noise. No beach within walking distance. But the Archaeological Museum is a 12-minute walk north, and KTEL Station A near the ferry terminal is a 5-minute cab ride.

Best for
First-timerscouplesand history lovers who want restaurants and nightlife on their doorstep
Walk times
  • Koules Fortress 5 min
  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum 12 min
  • KTEL Station A (west Crete buses) 8 min
Skip if: You need beach access every day or a quiet neighborhood after 10pm
Local tip: Book on Milidon Street or Chandakos Street. You get Lion Square proximity without the noise of the square itself.

City Center and Eleftherias Square

Practical, central, underrated by tourists

Budget $0-$0/night

Freedom Square (Plateia Eleftherias) anchors the modern city, with the Archaeological Museum a 3-minute walk along Xanthoudidou Street. Dikaisosynis Street connects it south to the covered 1866 Market, one of the few working street markets in Crete. Hotels along Evans Street keep you off the main traffic while staying central. KTEL Station B on Leoforos 62 Martyron is a 12-minute walk east, connecting to Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, and eastern Crete. No beach, no waterfront dining. But for getting around Crete by bus without paying for a rental car, this neighborhood makes the most sense.

Best for
Budget travelerssolo backpackersand anyone doing day trips across Crete by public bus
Walk times
  • Heraklion Archaeological Museum 5 min
  • Lion Square and Venetian Harbor 12 min
  • KTEL Station B (east Crete buses) 12 min
Skip if: You want waterfront views, evening atmosphere, or beach access
Local tip: The 1866 Market on Odos 1866 closes by 2pm on weekdays. Get there before noon for the best local cheese and olives at a fraction of tourist-area prices.

Ammoudara Beach

Heraklion's closest beach, 10 minutes from the airport

Budget $0-$0/night

Ammoudara sits 4 kilometers west of the city center along Poseidonos Avenue, a straight coastal road lined with hotels, tavernas, and beach bars. The beach stretches 3 kilometers from Gazi to the city edge: sandy, clean, and rarely as packed as the southern resort beaches. Ikaron Street runs parallel one block inland with most of the local restaurants. Bus line 6 departs every 20 minutes to Plateia Eleftherias (30 minutes, 1.80 euros). The airport is 10 minutes by car to the east. Good for families, beach-first travelers, and those landing late who want to skip the city immediately.

Best for
Familiesbeach-first travelersand anyone arriving late at the airport wanting a short transfer
Walk times
  • Ammoudara Beach 3 min
  • Plateia Eleftherias, City Center 30 min
  • Heraklion International Airport 10 min
Skip if: You plan to rely on public transit to visit Crete's interior or eastern coast
Local tip: Restaurants on Ikaron Street are 30 to 40 percent cheaper than beachfront tavernas on Poseidonos Avenue. Same food, shorter view.

Knossos Road

Walk to the palace, skip the city crowds

Budget $0-$0/night

Leoforos Knosou runs straight south from the city for 5 kilometers to the Palace of Knossos entrance. Hotels along this road and parallel Archanes Street offer quiet residential surroundings with good car access. Platanias village, 3 kilometers further south, has tavernas with no tourist markup. Bus line 2 to Knossos departs from Evans Street in the city center every 20 minutes (1.80 euros). Old Town is 20 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by taxi. No beach, no nightlife, minimal walkable dining. If you have a rental car and Knossos is your main reason for being in Heraklion, the logic here is straightforward.

Best for
Archaeology enthusiaststhose with rental carsand travelers who prefer a quiet residential feel
Walk times
  • Palace of Knossos entrance 10 min
  • Old Town and Lion Square 20 min
  • Heraklion International Airport 20 min
Skip if: You want beach access, nightlife, or walkable restaurants for dinner
Local tip: Arrive at Knossos before 9am. Tour groups from the harbor arrive by 10am and the site fills fast. Staying nearby means a 10-minute walk before the crowds hit.

What is the best area to stay in Heraklion for first-timers?

The Venetian Harbor area is the right call for a first visit. You are walking distance from Lion Square, Dedalou Street, the Morosini Fountain, and the Archaeological Museum. Restaurants run until midnight. Hotels on Milidon and Chandakos Streets cost $80 to $130 per night and keep you off the main traffic roads.

Is Ammoudara worth staying at instead of central Heraklion?

If beach access matters more than walkable history, yes. Ammoudara is 4 kilometers from the center and bus line 6 runs every 20 minutes for 1.80 euros. The catch is that public transport to eastern Crete (Agios Nikolaos, Elounda) requires a transfer back to KTEL Station B near 62 Martyron Street. Fine if you have a car, slower without one.

How far is Heraklion city center from the Palace of Knossos?

About 5 kilometers by road. Bus line 2 departs from Evans Street near Eleftherias Square every 20 minutes and reaches the site entrance in about 20 minutes. The ticket costs 1.80 euros. If you are staying in the Old Town, factor in a 12-minute walk to the bus stop first.

Which neighborhood in Heraklion has the best restaurants?

The Old Town around Lion Square (Plateia Liontaria) and the streets running south: Theotokopoulou, Perdikari, and Handakos. Skip the waterfront strip on 25 Avgoustou for food. Walk two blocks inland and prices drop 40 percent. The 1866 Market area near City Center is excellent for lunch but closes by 2pm.
