Sea Pines

The upscale southern tip. Harbour Town lighthouse, world-class golf, private beach.

Luxury $280-$650/night

Sea Pines sits at the island's southern tip and feels like a private resort town. Greenwood Drive takes you past Harbour Town Golf Links where the RBC Heritage plays every April. The red-and-white striped lighthouse on South Sea Pines Drive is the island's defining landmark. South Beach Marina off South Sea Pines Drive has waterfront dining that actually delivers. The beach here is quieter than Coligny and the homes are bigger. You pay for exclusivity and you get it. Entry gates keep the crowds out. Bring a bike because nothing is walkable without one. Expect to spend $300 a night minimum in season.

Best for
Couplesgolfersand anyone wanting a quiet upscale escape with real beach access.
Walk times
  • Harbour Town Lighthouse 12 min
  • South Beach Marina restaurants 8 min
  • Atlantic Ocean beach access 5 min
Skip if: You are on a budget or want walkable bars and nightlife. Everything requires a car or bike.
Local tip: Rent bikes from Harbour Town Bicycle Shop on Greenwood Drive. The Sea Pines Beach Club has the best stretch of sand on the island but access requires a guest pass from your hotel.

Coligny Beach

The heart of the island. Best beach access, most walkable, most affordable.

Mid-range $140-$380/night

Coligny is where most first-timers belong. Pope Avenue feeds into Coligny Circle, and from there you walk to Coligny Beach Park in under 3 minutes. Forest Beach Drive runs parallel to the shore with restaurants and bars close enough to hear the ocean. Coligny Plaza has groceries, ice cream, and cheap souvenirs without the resort markup. Hotels here are a mix of aging motels and newer mid-range properties but the location makes up for it. Expect crowds on weekends from May through August. Parking fills by 9am on holiday weekends so stay somewhere walkable. Budget around $180 per night in summer.

Best for
First-timersfamiliesanyone who wants beach access without a resort price tag.
Walk times
  • Coligny Beach Park 3 min
  • Coligny Plaza shopping 6 min
  • Restaurants on Pope Avenue 4 min
Skip if: You want peace and quiet. Coligny gets loud in summer and parking is a daily battle.
Local tip: Eat at The Salty Dog Cafe on Pope Avenue for lunch, not dinner. The dinner wait is absurd. Go at noon and you walk right in.

Palmetto Dunes

The resort middle ground. Three beaches, two lagoons, golf, tennis, real calm.

Luxury $200-$520/night

Palmetto Dunes sits mid-island off Queens Folly Road and delivers the full resort experience without locking you in. The plantation spans 2,000 acres with three distinct beach access points. Arthur Hills Golf Course inside the plantation is one of the best public-access courses on the island. Shelter Cove Marina is a short bike ride away for dinner on the water. The lagoon system winds through the whole property so you can kayak between rental villas. William Hilton Parkway runs right at the gate so you are never far from grocery stores or Highway 278. Not cheap, but not Sea Pines money either. Good families-with-teenagers spot.

Best for
Active familiesgolfersgroups wanting resort amenities with flexibility to explore.
Walk times
  • Palmetto Dunes beach access 6 min
  • Shelter Cove Marina by bike 10 min
  • Arthur Hills Golf Course clubhouse 8 min
Skip if: You want walkable restaurants. Dining inside Palmetto Dunes is limited and expensive.
Local tip: Book kayak rentals through Palmetto Dunes Outfitters on Queens Folly Road, not the hotel desk. Same kayaks, cheaper rates. The morning lagoon paddle before 9am is genuinely special.

Shelter Cove

Inland and affordable. Marina views, local dining, no beach walk.

Mid-range $90-$240/night

Shelter Cove clusters around the marina off William Hilton Parkway and Shelter Cove Lane at the island's midpoint. You are not on the beach but you are not paying beach prices either. The marina has waterfront restaurants worth visiting even if you are not staying here. Mathews Drive connects to most of the island without using congested 278. Hotels here tend to be extended-stay chains and independent inns running 30 to 40 percent cheaper than beachfront options. The tradeoff is real: a car is required for every beach visit. Works well for golfers splitting time between multiple courses or families using the island as a base.

Best for
Budget travelerslong staysgolfers who do not need daily beach access.
Walk times
  • Shelter Cove Harbour restaurants 7 min
  • Nearest beach via car 12 min
  • Publix on William Hilton Parkway 5 min
Skip if: You are coming specifically for the beach. The 12-minute drive adds up when you do it twice a day.
Local tip: Hudson's Seafood House on Hudson Road near Shelter Cove is the best seafood on the island. No resort markup, real portions, cash-friendly. Locals eat here, tourists rarely find it.

What is the best area to stay in Hilton Head for families?

Coligny Beach is the easiest call for families. You are a 3-minute walk from Coligny Beach Park, Coligny Plaza has a grocery store and kids shops, and Pope Avenue has casual restaurants that do not require reservations. Budget around $180 per night in summer. If your family wants more resort space, Palmetto Dunes on Queens Folly Road gives you 2,000 acres to roam, a kayak lagoon, and three separate beach access points.

Is it worth staying in Sea Pines or is it overpriced?

Sea Pines earns its price if you care about golf or want a genuinely quiet beach. The Harbour Town Golf Links is top-tier and the South Beach area is the best-maintained stretch of sand on the island. If you do not golf and just want a beach vacation, Palmetto Dunes gives you 80 percent of the experience at 60 percent of the cost. Skip Sea Pines if your kids will be bored without nearby restaurants within walking distance.

How far is Hilton Head from Savannah and is a day trip worth it?

Savannah is about 45 minutes from the Hilton Head bridge via US-278 West and Interstate 95 South. Worth it for a day trip. Walk Forsyth Park on Gaston Street and eat at Mrs. Wilkes on Jones Street. Park once and walk the whole historic district. Come back to Hilton Head before 5pm or you hit construction traffic on the causeway crossings.

When should you avoid visiting Hilton Head?

Late June through mid-August is peak season and Coligny Beach is packed wall-to-wall. The RBC Heritage golf tournament in mid-April fills Sea Pines and raises hotel prices island-wide. Best months are May (warm, smaller crowds, around $160 per night) and October (perfect temperatures, half the people, 20 to 30 percent cheaper rates across the island).
