Peace Memorial Park Area (Naka-ku / Motomachi)

Ground zero for history travelers

Mid-range $90-$220/night

You are two minutes from the A-Bomb Dome and four minutes from the Peace Memorial Museum. Hotels line Heiwa-odori, the broad tree-lined boulevard bisecting the park district, and Aioi-dori near the T-shaped bridge that served as the Enola Gay's aiming point. The tram stop Genbaku-dome-mae sits right outside most hotels. Most options here are mid-range Japanese business chains with a handful of boutique properties. Dining is thin at night but breakfast spots open early along Motomachi. Morning light on the Ota River is unlike anything else in Japan. Book at least six weeks ahead. This neighborhood sells out before everywhere else in the city.

Hiroshima Station Area (Ekimae)

Most convenient base, least character

Budget $55-$160/night

Hiroshima Station is the shinkansen hub and the origin point for every tram line into the city. Budget and mid-range hotels cluster around the south exit (Minami-guchi) on Ekimae-dori, including Comfort Hotel, APA, and Dormy Inn chains starting at around $55 per night. Walk five minutes east along Ekimae shotengai, a covered street market, for cheap ramen, yakitori, and konbini everything. The north exit serves newer corporate hotels. Peace Park is 25 minutes by tram on line 2 or 6 for 190 yen. Not pretty or memorable. But if you are catching an early shinkansen to Kyoto or connecting to Miyajima the next morning, this is the rational choice.

Best for

Walk times
  • Hiroshima Station shinkansen platforms 2 min
  • Tram stop (Hiroshima-eki) for Peace Park 1 min
  • Ekimae shotengai covered market 5 min
Skip if: You want atmosphere, walking access to sights, or any sense of place
Local tip: The south exit (Minami-guchi) has cheaper hotels and is the correct side for trams heading to the city center. The north exit adds a five-minute walk with no benefit for tourists.

Hondori / Nagarekawa (City Center)

Shopping, izakayas, and the real Hiroshima

Mid-range $80-$200/night

Hondori is a 600-meter covered arcade running east-west through the city center. Parallel to it, Nagarekawa is Hiroshima's nightlife strip: izakayas, cocktail bars, and the best okonomiyaki in the city. Chuo-dori connects both. Hotels here are boutique or mid-range Japanese brands. Hiroshima Castle is a 15-minute walk north. Peace Park is 12 minutes on foot south along the Motoyasu River. Trams on Heiwa-odori stop right outside. The best okonomiyaki is at Okonomimura on Shintenchi-dori, a three-floor building with 25 competing stalls. This is where Hiroshima actually lives, eats, and drinks. Not where it mourns.

Walk times
  • Peace Memorial Park 12 min
  • Hiroshima Castle 15 min
  • Nagarekawa bar district 5 min
Skip if: You are noise-sensitive or need to be steps from the Peace sites for an early start
Local tip: Book hotels on side streets off the Hondori arcade rather than on the arcade itself. Quieter at night and typically $20-30 cheaper per night for the same quality.

Miyajima Island (Itsukushima)

Floating torii, free-roaming deer, and ryokan luxury

Luxury $180-$500/night

Miyajima is a separate island reached by a 10-minute JR ferry from Miyajima-guchi port, itself 25 minutes from Hiroshima Station by JR Sanyo Line. Omotesando, the main street from the ferry terminal, leads past souvenir shops and restaurants straight to Itsukushima Shrine. Most accommodation is traditional ryokan along the waterfront. Prices are the highest of any area covered here but include kaiseki dinner and breakfast. Staying overnight means you have the shrine and the floating torii almost entirely to yourself after day-trippers leave around 17:00. Deer roam freely and approach restaurant tables without hesitation. Book three months ahead for spring and autumn.

Best for

Walk times
  • Itsukushima Shrine (floating torii gate) 8 min
  • Daisho-in Temple 12 min
  • Momijidani Park (maple valley trailhead) 15 min
Skip if: You are on a tight budget or need reliable transport for an early departure the next morning
Local tip: Request a room facing Hiroshima Bay. At high tide you can see the torii gate directly from your window. Pay the extra $30-50 for the bay-view room. It is worth it.

What is the best area to stay in Hiroshima for first-time visitors?

Stay near Peace Memorial Park in Naka-ku. You are two minutes from the A-Bomb Dome and can walk the park early before tour groups arrive around 09:00. Trams on Heiwa-odori connect you to Hondori and the Station in under 20 minutes. Budget around $120-180 per night for decent mid-range options. Book at least six weeks ahead. This neighborhood fills faster than any other in the city.

Is it worth staying overnight on Miyajima Island?

Yes, if budget allows. On a day trip you share the floating torii with several thousand tourists. Overnight guests see the shrine at dawn and dusk nearly alone. Ryokans cost $200-400 per person including kaiseki dinner and breakfast. The food alone justifies a significant part of the price. Book three months ahead for March to May and October to November visits.

How far is Hiroshima Station from Peace Memorial Park?

About 25 minutes by tram on line 2 or 6, costing 190 yen. The tram stop is directly outside the station's south exit (Minami-guchi). On foot it is roughly 2.5 kilometers. Taxis run around 1,500 to 2,000 yen for the trip. There is no direct subway connection between the two.

What is the cheapest area to stay in Hiroshima?

Hiroshima Station has the lowest prices. Business hotels like APA and Comfort Hotel start around $55-70 per night. Ekimae area south of the station also has budget guesthouses and capsule hotels from around $35 per night for a pod. Rooms are small but clean. Trams to Peace Park run from directly outside.
