Seminyak, Bali

Beach clubs, sunset cocktails, and restaurants that actually know what they're doing

Mid-range $85-$280/night

Seminyak sits 20 minutes north of Kuta but feels like a different island. Jalan Kayu Aya, known locally as Eat Street, runs parallel to the beach with proper restaurants from morning to midnight. Jalan Petitenget holds the high-end villas and Potato Head Beach Club. Double-Six Beach is cleaner and less crowded than Kuta. Walk to Seminyak Square for shopping without the motorbike chaos. Prices spike hard December through February. Book villas over hotels here. You get a private pool and kitchen for less than a standard hotel room. Stay between Seminyak and Petitenget for beach access without the noise.

Best for
First-timersbeach loverscouples wanting nightlife close by
Walk times
  • Double-Six Beach 20 min
  • Seminyak Square 35 min
  • Petitenget Temple 15 min
Skip if: You hate noise after 11pm or need to keep costs under $60 per night
Local tip: Book villas on Jalan Kayu Cendana rather than beachfront. Same walking distance to the beach, roughly half the price.

Ubud, Bali

Rice terraces, yoga studios, and the best food on the island

Budget $45-$200/night

Ubud sits 45 minutes north of Seminyak in the highlands. Jalan Monkey Forest is the tourist main drag, crowded but walkable, with warung restaurants and small guesthouses on both sides. Jalan Hanoman runs parallel and is quieter with better mid-range hotels. Jalan Bisma has the rice paddy view properties. Campuhan Ridge Walk starts near the Ibah hotel and takes 45 minutes round trip. Sacred Monkey Forest is worth the $4 entry. The night market on Jalan Raya Ubud opens at 6pm with nasi campur for 30,000 IDR. Avoid hotels directly on the main road as motorbikes start at 6am.

Sudirman-Menteng, Jakarta

Business travel, rooftop bars, and seriously underrated street food

Budget $65-$320/night

Jakarta splits into two practical zones. The Sudirman-SCBD corridor handles business travel with glass towers, malls, and rooftop bars along Jalan Senopati. Menteng is the old colonial residential area north of Sudirman with tree-lined streets, good warungs, and less traffic. The MRT runs from Lebak Bulus to Kota in 45 minutes and works reliably. Kemang, south of Sudirman on Jalan Kemang Raya, concentrates the expat dining scene with restaurants covering every cuisine. Traffic is brutal from 7 to 10am and 5 to 9pm. Skip taxis and use Gojek. Jakarta has more Michelin Guide mentions than any Southeast Asian city outside Singapore.

Best for
Business travelersfood enthusiaststransit layovers of two or more nights
Walk times
  • nearest MRT station (Sudirman corridor) 5 min
  • Grand Indonesia Mall 20 min
  • Menteng Park 25 min
Skip if: You want beaches, temples, or natural scenery. Jakarta has none of those.
Local tip: Stay within 500 meters of an MRT station. A hotel on Jalan Sudirman looks impressive but gridlock makes it miserable. Menteng gives you quiet streets and better value.

Prawirotaman, Yogyakarta

Borobudur day trips, batik workshops, and genuinely affordable guesthouses

Budget $22-$120/night

Yogyakarta is the cultural heart of Java. Prawirotaman in the south is the traveler zone with guesthouses, art galleries, and warung coffee shops within 200 meters of each other. Jalan Malioboro is the famous shopping street running north from the train station to Kraton palace. Borobudur temple is 45 minutes west by car and most hotels arrange transport for about $15 round trip. Prambanan is 20 minutes east. Budget guesthouses here are genuinely good at $20 to $40 per night. Gudeg Yu Djum on Jalan Wijilan serves the best gudeg in the city, a slow-cooked jackfruit dish you will not find elsewhere.

Best for
Budget travelershistory enthusiastsday trips to Borobudur and Prambanan
Walk times
  • Kraton Palace from Prawirotaman 15 min
  • Jalan Malioboro 20 min
  • Taman Sari Water Castle 10 min
Skip if: You need beach access, fast WiFi everywhere, or luxury hotel amenities
Local tip: Stay in Prawirotaman, not on Malioboro. Malioboro hotels are noisy and overpriced by 40 percent. Prawirotaman is a 15-minute walk and significantly cheaper.

Which area of Indonesia is best for first-time visitors?

Seminyak or Ubud in Bali. Choose Seminyak for beach and nightlife, Ubud for temples and rice terraces. Most first-timers do 4 nights in each. Jakarta and Yogyakarta are harder to navigate but more rewarding the second time around.

How much does it cost to stay in Indonesia per night?

Budget guesthouses in Yogyakarta start at $22. Mid-range hotels in Ubud run $80-130. Seminyak villas with private pools cost $150-250. Jakarta business hotels start around $90. High season in July and August and December through January adds 20-40 percent to all prices.

Is it better to stay in Ubud or Seminyak in Bali?

Seminyak wins for beaches, sunset cocktails, and access to other beach clubs along the Kuta-Canggu strip. Ubud wins for temples, trekking Campuhan Ridge, yoga, and the best food on the island. Ubud runs $50-80 cheaper per night on average. Most visitors split: 3-4 nights in each.

Where should I stay to visit Borobudur temple?

Borobudur is in Java, not Bali. Stay in Yogyakarta. Prawirotaman guesthouses start at $25 and most arrange a car to Borobudur for 200,000 to 250,000 IDR round trip. Leave by 5:30am to arrive before the tour buses and get the temple mostly to yourself.
